I use to like her in Jr.High. Her voice is kinda annoying but overall her music is catchy, find yourself singing along

It would have been easy to lump her in with 'pissed off alterna-90's female-artists' but there were some good songs. . .there is a weird charisma about her despite not being the best vocalist, musician, or songwriter- she isn't great, but certainly is good and talented. . .

Rather enigmatic. Her vocal skills are the embodiment of mediocrity, but somehow she manages to compensate for it with an added level of style. Her songs appeal to me. "Ironic," "Hand in Pocket" and "You Learn" are very powerful. One of those rare instances where the lack of vocal skills of the artist does not detract too heavily from the lyrically appealing nature of the songs she sings.

Critics will often rightfully point out the limited vocal talents of Alanis Morissette, but Bob Dylan can't really sing either. With that said, any review of Morissette obviously begins and ends with "Jagged Little Pill (1995), which earned her a Grammy for Album of the Year. I remember immediately taking notice the first time I heard "You Oughta Know" on the radio and wondering about the artist. Mood and emotion was everything for Morissette on this release and on every single, largely overcoming any vocal shortcomings. Nevertheless, she has never really matched "Jagged" as if the process left her spent. For example "Uninvited" was definitely strong, but "Thank You" was unfocused and uninspiring in my opinion. I'm sure that Morissette still has her fans, but I'm also afraid that I've lost interest for the most part.

Has definitely slid since Jagged Little Pill.

i have no problems with this performer. Alanis has done everything correct and right in a career. she was edgy, she turned the edge into art. then she aged and became introspective, where there was no room for the anger. this carried the music. classic pattern of artist development and some catchy tunes. there in lies the problem. Alanis has played it too safe, she's too much a cultivation of the system filling a momentary void. an Avril before their existed an Avril. the contruction of Alanis' career didn't allow for longevity. no one sells 11 million of their debut and lives to tell about it. but it has created a fine niche for the singer/songwriter to work out her issues. personally i think someone like Fiona Apple, altho more dramatic, fills more of a gap than Alanis Morisette could.

Please dont say anything if you havent go to her concerts. She is fabulous and her voice gives me goose bumps. Is amazing how she has grown in all aspects. She is one of my favorites.

Her singing reminds me of a cat in heat. Whiney and irritating! She was good in the movie Dogma, because she did not talk or sing! Only rating her by her music, when i hear her on the radio i quickly change the station.

That girl must be one of the most depressed and dark people on the planet, her album is titled Jagged Little Pill and her songs, the ones i've heard, are so depressing, it just darkens my own mood to listen to it.

I used to like Alanis before her hideous Under Rug Swept album. Thankfully I've grown tired of her whiney, self-indulgent tripe.

Alanis is nothing more than a man hating, self absorbed hag. She is at best a great politician, but a singer she is not. There is a reason why her newer albums have not been successful. Most of us are tired of her screeching voice....bleah ! UPDATE ! I gave Alanis one more star making a total of 2 for finding herself in India...but I still think her music is atrocious...

A bit of a curiosity. Like everyone with a Y-chromosome, I hated her first album. I though it was manufactured and slick, angry but calculated anger. Maybe the fact that my girlfriend at the time used to crank the album all the time had something to do with my derision towards Jagged Little Pill. Maybe it was her strange pronunciation of certain words (I'm Canadian like her, and I assure you it's not because she's Canadian) that rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe there were a plethora of intangible reasons I couldn't stand to hear that album. I don't know. Then she went to India and had some kind of religious experience, and I love her now. The first time I heard the song Thank You I was ready to forgive her almost everything she'd ever done. I love the less angry Alanis, because watching her catharsis was painful without giving me anything to empathize with. Her lyrics have always been confessional but should never have been 'clever' or confrontational. Now I'm starting to think that the pressure of maintaining her supposed anti-man facade crushed her, because it really wasn't her. She never hated men, but she was pressured by whoever into acting like there was some kind of face-off between her and 'them'. I'm glad she came out of that with her dignity intact. I still hate the first album, though.

Alanis is so great. She writes and sings all her songs.

I love Alanis' angst. But it's not what she's all about. I think that if you can think further than the end of your nose, and can go a bit deeper, you can actually GET what she writes about. She's not about surficiality, but DEPTH. Depth, however, appears to be out of some peoples ability. I think she's great... deep, growing, changing, and in the midst of all her roads in life, takes us with her.. in her music. That's what a good musican does. Her writing is superb, her music is WONDERFUL - she plays many instruments - and her voice, another instrument, is something that she controls very well.... AWESOME!!

I never will figure out why having a hostile attitude and singing like a pig being slaughtered makes someone a musical genius and innovator in the minds of some people. I have come to tolerate her more than when I first heard her. And I have heard worse. That's why I give her one point.

Wow, 31 million copies of Jagged little pill sold, making it the 3rd biggest selling album of ALL TIME! and deservedly so. The follow up album deserves more recognition than it recieved to. Overall a five star artist, and one that will be around for many, many years to come!

i would've given her 3.5 stars but i cant. baisicly that's not really my type of music, but i do have respect for her for writing her own lyrics and know how to play a guitar. she seems to have something against some men but i won't flame her for having a theme subject, everybody does, at least she has her own way of expressing it. also she have some other good songs like "ironic".

For everyone who has been leaving Alanis low ratings do the fact that she 'hates men' and whatnot... it goes to show how much you actually paid attention to songs OTHER than You Oughta Know. Her songs have depth to them, and not ALL are about relationships. Take the ever-so-popular Jagged Little Pill, for example... Forgiven, Right Through You, You Learn = struggle with the religion/beliefs she was raised with, struggles with her trying to get a record deal, struggles with LIFE! Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie has even LESS to do with relationships, so maybe some of you should turn off your radios and the mainstream crap it plays and listen to the ENTIRE cds some artists put out to get a full feel for their music. Alanis is a fantastic singer/songwriter who doesn't deserve the label 'angry white female'. Not anymore, anyway.

Alanis was good on the long lived Nickelodeon Sitcom,, You Can't Do That On Television. Her singing career looks pretty bleek. That's about it.

Hi Alanis ! How come you think everyone is to hear about your theatralic point of view ? Some guess you have something to say. But I could swear these are just the ones that don't speak your language and are simply impressed by your surficial way of waving your hear and making bitter eyes. Childish, not ? If there wasn't your music (just the notes I stress), I wouldn't give you any star at all, enerving you. But the notes sometimes have almost the certain something that lifts a no one out of the crowed. The voice it isn't. Too much of an angry unfair elderly wife with a frying pan. Is that really you ? Figure it out !

Her blend of soulful musings and meaningful angst was all too appropriate in the post-grundge pre-Lilith fair malaise of 1995-96, but unfortunately finds little context now. I really enjoyed Jagged Littled Pill, but her sophomore album did not leave me particularly inspired. With the flop of Dogma and an increasing irrelevant (albeit lucrative) music career, I find it sort of ironic that Alanis still receives any airplay or that sites like this still exist for her. I guess she's unique, although I would have a hard time convincing Fiona Apple of that...

Alanis Morisette is the godess of song. Not only does she feel every single note that she sings, but her powerful lyrics make you feel as if your not alone in your anger. (Or for that matter anything you feel.)

Alanis Morissette is in my opinion the best artist out there. She has an amazing way of putting her feelings in to words and she puts alot of emotion in her singing. Most people mistake her sadness for anger. Besides her writing talent she also can play many instruments and she has an awesome personality. Most so called musicians today have their lyrics written for them and have no idea how to play any instrument. Give her some credit.
