You've got to be kidding! The man has a voice like a rusty can opener! Not a taste I ever hope I acquire!
frenchiefastwa ves 09/20/2008
This rusty canadian rocker might not have the most delicate voice out there and his "claw-hammer" probably isn't a really spotless style of guitar playing...Not everybody is into experimental rock...Still ends up showing more gut per note than most top ten artists anytime. One of the few heroes left out there.
Humorbot 09/04/2008
You can't go far wrong with some of his best songs and the album harvest
Katrinabena 07/06/2008
I guess Young is an acquired taste but I think he is one of the alltime great lyricists.
Astromike 05/27/2008
A musical genius! Weather its singing, song writting, playing the harmonica, or guitar, Neil Young has done it all! I love his folkys rock music style. Not to mention his unique high pitched voice! A few of my favs are.....Heart of Gold, Thrasher, and Pocahontas. Keep em comin' Neil!!
Randyman 12/05/2007
Still one of my favorite rock artist. His music style has always set him apart from other rock artist of his time. his music holds up well considering I was listening to his music in high school.
angryjed 12/05/2007
One of the best and the only one that could pull off what he does.
FranksWildYear s 11/15/2007
I'd personally consider him a Singer/Songwriter over the Classic Rock genre. Although he's a homeotwn boy, I have to admit that I've never completely fallen for his ragged charms. But there is no denying that he has written some of the most timeless and transcendant songs of his era - Helpless, After the Gold Rush, Old Man, Sugar Mountain, Long May You Run, Heart of Gold, Cinamon Girl, Like a Hurricane, Comes a Time, Southern Man, Ohio, Onlly Love Can Break Your Heart....
Limpin' Trenchfoot 05/29/2007
His voice is terrible, one of the worst in rock history, and one that makes his music unlistenable in my books. His guitar playing is mediocre and his harmonica work is almost as lazy and tuneless as Bob Dylan's. Like Dylan he's penned the odd decent tune - e.g. Rockin in the Free World - but they're generally best done by others.
GenghisTheHun 05/01/2007
Here is another Canadian telling us what to do. Tiresome.
VirileVagabond 02/17/2007
I acknowledge the respect that Neil Young gets in the musical community, but he generally doesn't float my personal boat. The man is prolific enough to hit some spots for me, especially "Heart Of Gold", which is one of my favorite singles from any artist, but for the most part he falls flat. Moreover, his voice isn't strong enough even if his songwriting is usually well above par (as opposed to Bob Dylan, whose songs are better written). I had never considered Young's influence on grunge prior to reading some of the prior reviews, and I would have to agree with that conclusion. In the end, I'm going with an admittedly subjective three stars.
CandyLucy 05/25/2006
Yeesh! His voice is like a precursor to James Blunt.
zebulonzachari ah 02/22/2006
amazing, singer/songwriter/guiarist and harmonica player I grew up listening to him, and never will stop.
m2d 02/06/2006
absolutly incredible. words cant describe what his music has done for me.
chemicals_smur f 01/17/2006
This man is the greatest musician ever since Beethoven. He has redefined rock, folk, grunge, trance, country, alternative, contempory. Tons of musicians either record his songs or perform them live in concert. Now thats RESPECT!!!!!
chemical_smurf 01/13/2006
The best there is. Period!!!!!!!!!!
kadone 06/28/2005
music very good - voice terrible
kingguiness 05/17/2005
Not to take anything away from Elvis but this man is a King of Rock and Roll!
man 03/31/2005
Rates only second to Bob Dylan in terms of excellence.
gopman79 11/04/2003
Very good artist, but would recieve more praise from me if his biased and partisan opinion wasn't in half of his songs.
niehausapprais er 03/24/2003
I have to give this man credit for some decent music. -3 for the whining leftist crap. Just grow old and shut the F up.
primatesunite 02/22/2003
the most influential musician behind dylan and lennon
MedgarEvers 02/03/2003
As Neil has become one of my absolute favorite solo artists, it's high time I gave him more praise than "the best of the new Dylans". Here's an anecdote: I was walking my dog the other day listening to "Decade" (Neil's 60s-70s greatest hits compilation--highly recommended) my favorite song on there is "Expecting to Fly", an ambient, surreal opus about love lost but I was thinking about how many ways it could be applied and what a perfect soundtrack it would be for images of the Challenger's catastrophic explosion. Incidentally, the next morning the Columbia met its tragic end. And it's easy to get hung up on that event, and man was it terrible but this review is about Neil Young. The guy is a very effective songwriter at the piano and of course an accomplished guitarist. He's straightforward, he's fearless and his voice is very stylistic, in my opinion. "Needle and the Damage Done", "Ohio", "Broken Arrow"; these are undeniably some of the greatest songs ever written. And I also recommend walking your dog to music- strange things are bound to happen. On an overcast day I was listening to "Abbey Road" and the sun came out with "Here Comes the Sun". Go figure.

There sure seems to be alot of Neil Young Bashing. Yeah well maybe he did make a comment in one of his song's about the southern man. Then later Lynyrd Skynyrd came back with their song saying something like southern man dont need him around(not sure not a L.S.fan) anyhow.(?).Well were are they now. Half the members died shortly after their catchy phrase used in their song. The remaining members of the band are feuding and arent even speaking. When they arent trying to sue each other they are talking about having a concert at the crash site. Weird. At least Neil Young still has a life and a career and FANS.
Ultra 10/29/2002
Yeah, he had some shiddy songs... But his best was truly incredible! Old Man and others!
Jason1972 10/21/2002
Another one of rock and roll's underrated songwriters. True, his voice is not a graceful one but that's the Neil Young we've grown to respect and love. He writes the songs and sings them to make a point. You think he cares about computer-enhancing techniques to fortify his singing, c'mon. He's a musician who plays his music stripped down, simple, but at the same time, poignant, and meaningful. My personal favs, "Heart Of Gold", "Cortez The Killer", "Unknown Legend".
kiwi8577 09/02/2002
Great singer and songwriter! Love "Southern Man"!!

Solo...YUCK....
e.tilbury 06/21/2002
you go dude! that concert at kent state was cool
pineywoodsslim 06/01/2002
No one loves Neil's voice, but he is a Rock and Roll original and one of the five best songwriters of the past 40 years. His guitar playing is underrated, because he uses it so well to support the song -- no wasted licks, but great underscores and exclamation points where needed.
csir 04/24/2002
The man writes a killer song!
jrmymaya 01/08/2002
Clearly not a popular site for neil young fans
TheFreak 12/04/2001
I heard Neil Young sing about us, I heard Neil Young put us down, and I hope Neil Young remembers Southern men don't need him round knowhow. That was taken from Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" and while I think that may be a little harsh, there is some truth to that. Neil Young dumps on the Southerners too much. But I did love the CSNY song "Ohio". At least he appears to be liberal. And despite the fact that it was far too long, the 13-minute "Southern Man" has some good music. Take care, everyone!
Potch1214 11/29/2001
Neil Young to some is an acquired taste. But he is worth acquiring. The songs are phenomenal. His LIFE is rather extraordinary. The man is one of the greatest in rock history. What a performer!
kyes 11/07/2001
maybe i'm just too young to remember much of his stuff. but i remember seeing him perform with pearl jam at the MTV awards once, and jam with a bunch of guitar greats at one of the R&R hall of fame inductions. i was like, who the hell is this guy and what the hell is he doing? he sure ain't singing and playing the guitar.
ellajedlicka21 10/25/2001
He is just a wonderful musician all-around: from the ever-clever Southern Man to Sugar Mountain to Old Man to Rocking in the Free World, the politically motivated "Campaigner," Heart of Gold. His voice is great. He is a really good songwriter.
Johnny Roulette 10/13/2001
LIVE RUST, DECADE, EVERYBODY KNOWS THIS IS NOWHERE, HARVEST MOON, HARVEST, COMES A TIME...the list is long and Young has written some of the greatest songs in rock history. Slobberbone did a great version of Young's "Piece Of Crap" on the 1999 NY tribute album, This note's for you, too.
markspot 05/25/2001
I have had the pleasure of getting to know mr young's work throughout the years, and i must say, he is one of the most affluent and influential musicians/activists around. He is a no bull-----er, and lays it out there for anyone to grab and enjoy! Kudos to one of the great songwriters of our time....
silas23 03/17/2001
One of the best song writers ever!!!!!
ddsdd 03/10/2001
even neil says "it's all the same song". no one, and i mean no one will be in the cut throat industry of recording for over 30 years with no talent. listen to what his peers say of him. like him or not it's hard to say he's not a major talent and a major force in music. neil young will be remembered for his contributions to music forever. LONG MAY YOU RUN!.
crazy_byrd 02/24/2001
He annoys me. His music reeks. His voice is almost as pleasing as nails going down a chalkboard. I'm almost EMBARRASSED to say he's a Canadian like me....the guy does NOT deserve the credit he got. One of the most overrated musicians of our time (right next to RUSH...also a crappy Canadian group that I hang my head in shame over)
cookiemookie 02/08/2001
He is a genius! He can do it all. You two out there who cut the man down, have no clue what you are missing. This is a man who enjoys his music . He isn't up there just for the bucks! There is a lot to say for personal satisfaction! Maybe that is way Poor Kurt Cobain took his life, he didn't look every enthused up there on stage! He is out there to please himself as an artist, and we the audience are the lucky ones to observe this raw talent!
charley2112 01/27/2001
One of the few DDD cd's i have is 'ragged glory" if i crank it up its almost like being there.
fitz 01/24/2001
Neil Young has stood the test of time. His music is imaginative. Who else would dare to make so many changes, suffer the wrath of the corporate giants, the record companies and remain faithful to what he loves? His music. I can trace the most memorable moments of my life with tracks from this great musician.
dave52 01/15/2001
worst guitarist ever. im wasting my youth on his old ass.
angel859500 12/16/2000
I have to say, the only thing of his that I really like is the Unplugged album. Harvest Moon and Like a Hurricane, are better songs than any of his old stuff.
Wtbyan 10/03/2000
You know, he's cool and all. But, I went to Farm Aid this year. It is very admirable what he has done with that organization. And, the event itself was the best day of music I have ever seen(and I see a lot of oncerts, including Woodstock99). But, he talked SO much during his set. And, then wehn CSNY was on I just wished he's shut up so they could play! He's still got the music, but not the sense.
fisheyedfool 09/26/2000
A true great from Buffalo Springfield, to CSNY, to a solo career. The man's music will live on forever.
cinnamongirl 09/20/2000
Neil is the best there is. It bums me out to hear people complain about his voice or his songs sounding alike. The simplicity of both are what make him so incredible and so timeless. His music is the soundtrack of life. I love him.
