For every good song there are five bad songs. Pink Floyd is among the most over-rated rock bands.

Go ahead and argue all you want, but "The Final Cut" is their masterpiece. It has several of their most exquisite guitar solos along with some of the most poignant lyrics ever to be found on a rock album. It is Pink Floyd "matured" to the point that a lot of the "fans" just didn't "get it" anymore. Too bad for them.

They are 4 stars based on "Dark Side of the Moon" alone. "The Wall" pushes them up to a 5.

Bah... I don't really know or like them very much yet, but I am trying my best to do so. But I recognize that they are a pivotal classic rock band, and are fully worthy of five stars.
Update: Shine On You Crazy Diamond has finally broken through and hit me. I appreciate Floyd fully. Overblown yet brilliant musical genius.

OK, it was trendy in the 80's to like Pink Floyd but it was an acquired taste in the 60's. You had to be a heavy duty doper to really be on the Pink Floyd bandwagon.

I seem to only listen to them when I'm under the influence. Don't care much for them otherwise. Although I think it's pretty cool how their album The Dark Side of the Moon and the Wizard of Oz go together when played in synch.

A while ago, I heard David Gilmour talking about all the lengths this band went to in order to create perfect sound at their live shows. He was saying that he could "guarantee" concertgoers that the band would offer a "perfect re-creation" of the studio album, note for note. Just by that comment, this dude revealed that he was a tool. I always thought that music, especially live music, was interesting for its imperfections and spontaneity. Silly me.

In some ways the 70s was the pinnacle of rock but that decade also spawned the most insufferably pompous, bombastic and pretentious genre ever..prog rock. Concept albums, albums which contain 'concertos'...Gawd help us! Floyd were not the worst perpetrators. That honour goes to Yes, Styx, Kansas, King Crimson, ELP, Rush, Moody Blues, all prog metal, Camel, Caravan, Genesis, Gong, Gentle Giant, Greenslade, Renaissance, Marillion, Asia, Allan Holdsworth, Brand X, Kate Bush....die you b*st*rds!) Floyd are guilty of many crimes against music but in Dave Gilmour at least they had a guitar player who has come up with some of the tastiest licks in rock. Pity about the rest of the music that surrounds them. But Floyd were arch perpetrators of the crime that is the concept album and for that they should be sentenced to work in the salt mines in some far flung gulag

Overrated?? Having an album on the Billboard charts for something like 14 years straight deserves a little respect, don't you think? Granted, after "The Wall" they went downhill, but everything they put out in the 70's was brilliant.

Deep space static? Sounds like you've heard one song by them Felix. No way to judge a band. Sure, I guess they use some odd sound effects but really, have you ever really listened to Animals? Like really listened to it? I really severely disliked most of their stuff the first time around but I've really grown to love it. In no way is Pink Floyd for the musically dead. The Floyd employs the soaring melody of an orchestra and the powerful sound of an electric guitar, a gospel choir, animal sounds, anything to enhance their music. Really, why would Dark Side of the Moon be heralded as a musical milestone if it was "musically dead"? To say such things about such a powerful work of art that has been known to move me to tears is blasphemous.

The worst thing about classic rock radio is that it tends to reduce a classic band's output to two or three well-known songs. With Pink Floyd, that's a shame, because there's so much more to this band than "Money" and "Another Brick in the Wall Part 2," the latter of which is probably one of the weakest songs in their entire canon. Everyone knows "Dark Side of the Moon" and "The Wall," but you owe it to yourself, if you love good music, to check out the rest of their output. They were at their musically creative peak in the years leading up to "Dark Side," though their debut, "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn," is a little dodgy, more of a typical '60s psychedlia party that sounds awfully dated today. That's not to take away from Syd Barrett, who gave the band their footing, but had it not been for Syd's demise into madness that paved the way for David Gilmour's entrance, this band may have quickly faded away and been remembered today as a short-lived '60s curiosity. David became the band's musical soul and has always been its most musically talented member. He may not be the most technically proficient guitarist in the world, but few can rival him for the amount of pure emotion he coaxes out of every note he plays. Alongside Roger Waters' emerging lyrical vision, the pair made Pink Floyd unstoppable in their heyday. Unfortunately, Roger's ego began to get the best of him, and by the time of "The Final Cut" -- a beautiful and terribly underrated album, by the way -- he ran the group with an iron fist. It couldn't go on that way. Everyone knows about the animosity that ensued when Roger tried to sue David and Co. for continuing the Floyd without him. But David surely felt he had something to prove -- namely, that Pink Floyd was HIS band, too. Well, if he had stopped with "A Momentary Lapse of Reason," one would be compelled to say that he would have been better off leaving Pink Floyd dormant. But he redeemed himself nicely with "The Division Bell," the Floyd's last studio album to date. It had all the beauty of a classic Floyd album. The lyrics were so-so, however, and that's where Roger's presence was missed. Thankfully for all of us fans, the band seemed to be able to put their differences aside and go out on a high note, with the classic lineup -- Roger and David together -- performing at the Live 8 show in London earlier this year. Anyway, if you want to look beyond "Dark Side" and "The Wall," check out "Meddle" (perhaps their most consistently enjoyable album, with "Echoes" perhaps being their best song ever), "Wish You Were Here," "Animals," "The Final Cut," and "The Division Bell." If you're looking for something a little more avant-garde, try "Atom Heart Mother" or "Ummagumma" on for size. You won't regret it.

PF is a rock orchestra. . .a seemingly ironic statement. Floyd is good drug music and underrated for its technical intelligence. "Dark Side" is a must-own followed by the un-appreciated "Wish You Were Here".

Any band who can use minor chords and harmony like that is high in my book. Got to see them (sans Waters) at the end of their Delecate Sounds of thunder tour in the south of France.....what an swesome show! I will never forget it. I am about to explain to you why they are the greatest band of all time. Lets start with the basics Dave Gilmour, one of the greatest guitarist of all time, and Roger Waters, he was the heart of the band until the 80s but Gilmour did a excellent job himself but wasnt as good at writing. Dark Side of the Moon stayed on the charts for 236 weeks thats about 10 years. The Wall sold over 23 million copies and Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2 is an anthem for high school students everywhere. Their concerts were complex and involving, so entertaining they made a movie just on The Wall concert. I admit their music is a little bit of an aquired taste but if you sit down and listen to them you will fall in love with the Floyd.

A superb band indeed! They made some great mind blowing music. A lot of it influenced by the mental decline of their original leader Syd Barret. His sad condition provided some great writing material. Since the departure of Roger Waters the band has declined and I dont consider them relevant. Pink Floyd was only a band from 1966-1979. I hope Gilmour and his cronies have packed it in. They're embarassing themselves. I'd give Pink Floyd 5 stars but the remaining yoyos carrying on the Floyd name devalue the band.

There is nothing like closing your eyes, being in a darkened room, and listening to Floyd's music. Their music is a wonderful journey, with ultimate highs and lows, swooping over and through you, as you ride the cosmos with their songs... [and this is coming from a guy who has not ever taken any kind of drugs - the music is all I need to transport me to places in my mind, thank you! :) ] To those that have rated this band as bad or terrible, heck, why did you even bother? Go listen to your fluffy be-bop pop crud! ;) The Wall is an absolute masterpiece, with amazing tunes that are all that much more when heard live or via headphones... Wonderful, talented, great, excellent. Bring The Boys Back on stage!!! ;)

Right from early experimentation (Syd Barret era) to melodic expression of Water's complex ideas along with that dreamlike state of trance that Gilmour's guitar riffs induce -- the effect has always been absolutely mesmeric. An immensely original creative genious, and arguably, one of the best Art/Classic/Prgressive/Psychedelic/Experimental 'rock' bands of all times - though PF music defies the boundaries of being included in any particular genre as such. It is heartening to notice that music that is so artistically superior has been able to capture the popular fancy for more than quarter of a century and has been a gigantic and deserving commercial success as well, without being restricted to a few whimsical intellectuals. PF, and the concept that it is, is a treat to musical brains and ears, and will remain so for a very long time.

The Pink Floyd took concept albums, studio recording techniques, and concert performances to a new level. The experimentation of the band's early years is still fresh, even today, and the orchestration of the Roger Waters albums and concerts is just pure genius!!! This band took the art of performing to a new level! The attention to detail, in lyrics, key, structure, mix, etc. demonstrates the passion and depth of the band, while their technique demonstrates their musical ability. This band helped set the standard for all rock bands.

By far the best band to ever come out of England, and I know that's a bold statement, but I don't care. Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall are simply the the finest musical evidence I can back up my claim with. DSOTM remained on the Billboard Top 200 charts, for 15 years. For some 770 odd weeks, over 10,000 people a week went out to the stores and bought this album. From it's release in 1973 until mid-1988. Is this sinking in? That's just here. Try going to Germany, or Argentina, or Sweden, they've sold a crapload more over there as well. This band will never sound dated or overplayed, cough, beatles, cough stones, and can only butt heads with zeppelin. But anyone who knows a thing about music will tell you that zeppelin, although fantastic, really never did much other than rip off blues songs, raise the vocal register, and profit. When they stopped doing that, only Kashmir sticks out as a great tune, everything else went to crap. All in all, Floyd kicks ass. Dave Gilmour is the most underrated guitarist in the world.

A band that's nearly impossible to describe. Is it rock? Is is psychadelic madness? Is it dreamy soundscapes? Is is angry and rebellious? Is it soothing and meditative? Is it thoughtful and compelling? The answer is: YES. I can only recommend that you take a listen to any of the following albums: "Meddle", "The Dark Side of the Moon", "Wish You Were Here" (<-- personal favorite), "Animals", "The Wall" and "A Momentary Lapse of Reason". Each is a masterpisce in it's own right, and defy conventional explanations. Pink Floyd took rock music and reinvented it.

It's rare to find someone that can write decent poetry in music. Far more rare to find someone that can blend philosophy at the same time. Roger Waters is an absolute genius. They have written some of the most beautiful music ever created. The depth of Dark Side, the Wall, Wish you were Here, Animals, etc. is something every musician should strive for. Gilmour is amazing. When listening to their music I often wonder if music can ever be this good again. And if incredible music weren't enough, they actually had something deep and intelligent to say.. How rare.. !!
