The greatness of Stevie Wonder as a performer and major contributor to the R&B/Contemporary movement can never be stressed enough. His talent unmistakable (amidst his blindness), and his voice beautiful and resonant, Wonder is every bit the quintessential R&B artist who has endured the passage of time as an unquestioned great and legend. With songs such as 'My Cherie Amour', 'I Just Called to Say I Love You', 'Part-Time Lover' and 'Overjoyed' still as popular as the day they first were heard, Wonder has proven to the world his handicap was never a factor in being amongst the greatest performers of all-time. He is truly one of the greatest (if not the greatest) ever.

If you only buy one of his albums let it be "Songs In The Key of Life" then you will probably be forced to buy many more of his gems after you become spellbound with his musical genius.

What a career. By the time most artists were getting their first big break, Stevie was well into his third classic period in the mid 70's. by 30 he had crammed several lifetimes of acheivement onto his records, joyous pop, serious socially conscious soul, genre defining funk and experiments that lead whole schools of musicians down raods he only ever hinted at. He was as important to the development of popular music as an art form as only a few artists, possibly Ray Charles, the Beatles and Bob Dylan.

Like everyone else, he's made some dreck: I HATE "Ebony and Ivory," and "I Just Called To Say I Love You," and I'm not fond of "You Are The Sunshine of My Life" either. Some of his early material in the 60's wasn't great too. But he put out a succession of great albums in the 70's ( my favorite's "Innervisions") that cemented his reputation as one of the great all-around talents in the industry. A legend.

"Overjoyed"(My all time favorite), "My Cheri A'mour", "Send one your love", i mean, no one else could ever write the way that this musical icon has. I will go out on a limb and say that he probably has had more artist remake his music than any other musician or other artist ever! And some of the artist that remake his music aren't even in the same music genre.

Early Stevie is the best-especially with the Funk Brothers backing him up. some say that I Was Made Top Love Her is the finest bass playing on any recording- of course James Jamerson was at his finest.
Djahuti 11/22/2004
Not only is he a great musician, singer and songwriter- he can also play EVERY instrument on an entire song or album!

There is no one that writes music like Stevie Wonder. The passion and enthusiam contained in his songs are unprecedented. No doubt the best ever!

i can't see giving a high rating for the most stolen records in the 70's.

I like Stevie Wonder. He has done some good songs. I really like For Once in My Life, and Sir Duke. This guy has a lot of talent for writing songs and playing different instruments. I think he is a real inspiration.
norelle 04/03/2002
his songs make me cry i am listing to lately one of his songs. he is the best male singer ever!
lisalorib 03/03/2002
Stevie is a testament to what music can do - makes you feel , makes you think , music can change the world around you. Just listen to "Songs in the key of Life" and "Innervisions". Stevie, along with Marvin Gaye, defined 70's soul.I have always admired Stevie for making a positive change- wish more artists were like him.
Errol 03/01/2002
To me he seems like somebody that anyone who listens to music has to like at least a little bit. He comes accross as personable as well as talented. His Christmas album (or CD) is still one of my favorites. "Superstition" is also a great recording. I like his rendition of "For Once In My Life." Hearing him do "Fingertips - Pt 2" as a young kid is impressive - second only to a young Michael Jackson.
ajktpt 02/05/2002
Maybe the most interesting and musical composers of our time. His tunes have been re-recorded and re-arranged in every style immaginable. One cannot single out any song. They are all great or near great. Stevie and Paul McCartney could very well be the "composers" of note for our generation or any other generation. Wonder's music "moves" me and hopefully, all. Or it should. A note to you Hip Hop people, check out Stevie Wonder and the rest of the OG's. Perhaps you'll learn something about music and you're real roots. The world does not relove around drum machines and mindless bass lines. Peace.

He has been a star since he was a kid. His greatest introspective work is his album Songs in the Key of Life. It has some beautifully written and deepful thought out songs on it. Otherwise, I'm not a very big fan of Stevie.

Stevie, what can you say about Stevie. He is a wonder, that's what. Keep em coming Stevie. No oned does it like you. Music is your blood. And we love to get your tranfusions.

GENIUS. My eleven year old daughter is always bragging on todays artist and their music. She thinks that everything about her young generation is so new and cool, or as she puts it "that's tight". So I thought I would be smart and introduce her to the real source of some her favorites, that would be Stevie of course. So we surfed the web and found several sites from which I so arrogantly provided her a quick lesson in music history but to my surprise I myslef was schooled. Several songs that I had credited other artists with turned out to be Stevie originals. I haven't had the heart yet to tell her about the bell bottoms and platforms that she raves over. LOL!!

I recently heard a relatively obscure Stevie Wonder song on the radio that rocked my world and I became obsessed with finding it. So I got on Napster and downloaded tens of old Stevie songs that I never heard before - in addition to a few that I had - and the next thing I know, I go through a period of several weeks in which I ONLY listen to Stevie. I never found the song that I was looking for, but I did find a musical education. Stevie has got to be one of the funkiest singer / songwriters that ever lived... for those of you who only know "I just called to say I love you," it's time to do a little research. P.S. Medgar Evers, I am buying Innervisions based on your recommendation...
MedgarEvers 03/31/2001
I bought "Innervisions" a few weeks ago. That's one of the best records I've ever heard. It's amazing to think that a man that cannot even see the light of day has made such colourful music. In the 60's he was our pop prodigy, Little Stevie Wonder. And in the 70's he went political and covered a massive amount of ground. I can't wait to get even deeper into his collection. I've heard good things about "Talking Book," "Songs in the Key of Life," and "Music of my Mind." Stevie remains one of the greats and one of the beloved.
hanunwin 03/28/2001
Stevie Wonder is the source of all R'n'B music of today, without him at least 5 artists, including Coolio, George Michael and Mary J Blige would not have had number one hits in the last 5 years. People think all Stevie is about is "I just called to say I love you" but this is not Stevie, he is much more than that and the most underrated star I know - people need to learn to respect him more for his major contribution to the music industry which would not be what it is today without him.
Cult Master 02/28/2001
Stevie Wonder is a very fine singer and song-writer and most his songs reflect this. He has had the occasional 'duff' song but on the whole he far exceeds the talents of the, in my opinion, hugely over-rated Beatles. He is, I would say, on a par with the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band.
maat_9 02/27/2001
I can't express in just a few seconds how I feel about Stevie. Let me just say a Love for Stevie is a criteria I seek in my men. I have even written poetry about my love for Stevie's music. He is before his time. He has healed and opened up my life. He's Mr. Wonderful!!

Its all good. I can't think of a bad Stevie Wonder song. Sly Stone doesn't come close to Stevie in talent. With pretension and presumption, if I were ever talented enough to write a great song, I would choose Stevie to perform it.
luck8932it 07/22/2000
It's very difficult for me to explain what I feel when I listen to S.Wonder music.I'm Italian,my english is very very little...but I wanna try. S. Wonder is,without doubt, the best songwriter of music history.Do how many "stars"of music write, produce, arrange, compose and play their songs like he does???????????
Hved6055et 04/17/2000
The man has some serious-ass soul!!

Stevie Wonder accomplished more before his 40th birthday than most individuals (let alone musicians) will accomplish throughout their lives. His early 70s collaborations with Jeff Beck brought rock and roll sensibility back to R&B; Lenny Kravitz is inconcievable without them. "Talking Book," "Innervisions," "Songs In The Key of Life" are touchstones of life experience that few artists, regardless of outlet, can equal. One of the most important composers of the second half of the 20th century.
Ruby 03/21/2000
"Superstition" is one of the funkiest, greatest songs of all time. Only Sly Stone can top that one...
nece4819om 03/10/2000
Stevie Wonder is a true musical genius well ahead of his time. He won't recieve the recognition an artist of his importance is due until after he is dead and that is a shame..
