While I'm not a fan,Sting has put out some incredibly good stuff over the years. Can't say I like it all,but I like him more than most artists on this list.

Based purely on his solo output my two stars are generous. IMO Sting has made the cardinal sin by taking his music too seriously what with getting jazzers like Marsalis in to give his music a 'sophisticated' edge. It's all too calculated and knowing and doesnt come across as coming from the heart.

In 1984, The Police was the biggest band in the world, and Sting walked away on top, but as they say, there is only one way to go from the top. Sting gets a lot of credit for fusing world music (eg Eastern influences), but other artists have done (and continue to do) this better (eg Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel). As a result, Sting is largely overrated as a solo artist, and I find his work to be somewhat generic, but with a good concept. Granted he has enjoyed flashes of solo brilliance such as "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" (from "Dream Of The Blue Turtles" (1985)) and "Desert Rose" (from "Brand New Day" (1999)), but he had help from Branford Marsalis for the former and help from Farhat Bouallagui for the latter. The bottom line is that Sting's solo work (though ambitious) is largely bland and uneventful for most listeners, proving that The Police was clearly greater than the sum of its parts (as it seems obvious in hindsight that the other band members provided much of the energy that made Sting's song writing work best). Fortunately, the casual fan has the option of "Fields Of Gold: The Best Of Sting 1984-1994" (1994) which distills the first four studio releases down to a manageable fourteen tracks; however this disk omits the singles "Brand New Day" and "Desert Rose" (as they were released after 1994). Another compilation option is "The Very Best Of Sting & The Police" (2002) which boils down the hits of both Sting's solo work and The Police even further (though this disk does include those aforementioned latter tracks).

I've always enjoyed his stuff. The most amazing one is "The Russians Love Their Children Too."

best with the police!

Much better as part of The Police than he has been otherwise. For at least 15 years, HE'S BEEN MEDIOCRE AT BEST. The early solo albums were quite good, but since then his work is mostly shabby: Pretentious with a capital P, sometimes lazy, and boring.
southparker9 05/02/2005
Once he left The Police, there was no need to listen to him ever again. He was good for maybe 2 solo albums, but he's had way more than two solo albums.

Jamaican accent? Sure, there were some songs that sounded like that...like Wrapped Around My Finger... Anyway, these British artists are very interesting. Sting is another one. Desert Rose Fields of Gold You'll Be Wrapped Around My Finger are good songs.

hey...moosekarloff, uh..i never knew sting had a jamaican accent hahahaha......where'd u get that from...he's British!!!

I've liked some of his songs, but far too many of them sound exactly alike, in my opinion.

Great singer...has unique style. Fantastic songwriter. His songs are thought provoking with a heart and soul. Sing more, fight less. Amen
kolby1973 11/07/2003
I liked him when he was with the Police, but solo he bores me to tears. He just can't get it together since the break up years and years ago. I am still amazed by his album sales. B-O-R-I-N-G !!!!!
tvtator 11/06/2003
Great singer, has one of the best voices. Wonderful songwriter. I especially love it that he incorporates different styles into his music. Plus he is just gorgeous.

THE MAN IS A LIVING LEGEND. HE HAS THE PEOPLE SWINGING TO HIS MUSIC FOR 2 DECADES RIGHT FROM THE DAYS OF POLICE.
hermanbordis 08/28/2003
Good musician
Moosekarloff 08/19/2003
Stink is more like it. Lame singer with a phony Jamaican accent. Can barely play his instrument. Really boring and non-riveting stage presence. His songs are totally forgetable, inane ditties for people who don't know a thing about music. Ask anyone who actually plays, sings, has performed in a band or as a single, etc., what they think about this no-talent, and the vast majority are likely to laugh at you.
twinmom101 06/02/2003
His music really is amazing and his lyrics have always been top-notch. He does everything from Middle-eastern influence to country and it all has a rare sensitivity to it. One of my favorite songs is Saint Agnes and the Burning Train. Just a simple guitar melody, no frills, just beautiful. To his discredit however, I saw him in concert in 2001 and it was pretty lame. No energy, just one song after another. Well, Roxanne was good, I guess.
TheBlueWyvern 05/26/2003
Hands down, the best artist the world has yet seen. Versatile, sensitive, experimental, substantial...he has it all! His music is inspiring, his voice is pure heaven, his lyrics poetry - beautiful even without the accompanying music. I've got to say that "Why Should I Cry For You?" is probably his best lyric (I cry every time I hear it), and The Soul Cages definitely his best album!

STING is an absolute genius! Always has been, always will be.Every sony has a story behind it...STING'S THE THING!!!!

He is just the greatest i don't think there is any artist that is better than this man he has everything going for him. He can sing, compose, write and act and on top of all of that he has to be the most gorgeouse sexy person ever.

I first became aware of Sting as a solo artist when 'Ten Summoners Tales' came out with songs like 'If I Ever Lose My faith In You', 'Seven Days', 'Shape Of My Heart' and 'Fields Of Gold'. So I bought the album and totally fell in love. I then realised that I knew loads of the Police songs, and got into Sting big time. I love the way he's unafraid to dabble into different types of music, even if people slander it. I can't really think of one song that i don't really like, but I know I'm biased. I hope he's around for a lot more longer and he keeps on producing amazing songs like he has done.
csir 04/24/2002
He was my first crush and still rocks. His longevity is no accident.
ajktpt 02/05/2002
Marvelous composer, singer and bass player. If you have noticed, his bass lines, or notes, are not the typical ones found in most Rock recordings. Stings' voice timbre and pitch seem to be perfect, as is his timing. Would love to have him in my band. No audition. I'm not so sure of his choice of sidemen in recent bands, but that's his problem. He truely ranks up there with Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson, Elton John and Elvis Costello as Rocks' premier composers. This is one musician to be "aware of" as history unfolds.
ellajedlicka21 01/04/2002
I applaud him for his rainforest foundation. He's a respectable musician, but his best work was with the Police.
jlosux 07/14/2001
Great with the Police, sucks solo. And shame for singing with Puffy & ruining a classic song...I don't care if it was a tribute it just blew!!!

hahaha! sting is so funny!
Captain Bal 05/22/2001
Being a "Police" fan, how could I not give this guy five stars. He's another one of my favorite singers of all time.
gotoberocknrol l 05/06/2001
His work with Police, just tremendous. And his solo work, fantabulous. I pray he continues to produce. I hope he rocks on right to the end. More!!!! More!!!! More!!!! Sting.
mukkrukkis 03/15/2001
Sting is one of the bests! Besides being a wonderful musician, he is also a sexy man! I especially loked his music back when he was in The Police, before they went commercial. They used to be punk. Sting couldn't do anything wrong though. He is MY HERO!!!
crazy_byrd 02/24/2001
I want to cover this man in chocolate pudding and have him for dessert. Oh...um....and he's a great singer too ;o) *wink*
Guinevere 02/07/2001
Wonderful, special, deep, thoughtful, musical, sensitive...simply "an old soul"...
gerry1980 01/27/2001
this guy is 50 and looks like 30 something, and i have to love him just for having led the police but also his solo stuff is quite great, very different from the police but very intelligent texts and great music, all kind of stiles. great voice, good bass player and a sexsymbol, which makes men not liking him that much...be honest out there!! *g*
jairo 12/24/2000
History will teach us nothing. Sting is becoming the great musician of our time. He is pushing music into all directions. Forget about rock and roll. It is not just about rock and roll or country or hip hop or reggae. It is simply about music. Sting gets rid of categories. He is surpassing the Beatles and Bob Dylan in what they were trying to do. I think I'll get his latest album now.
fidothe dog 10/19/2000
Great artist! But I fear some men won't like Sting because he is so good-looking.

Boring crud!

I have admired Sting for many years now. I have to admit that I don't love all his music but the ones I love, I love! His songs that arn't pop hits tend to be the ones that attract me the most. I like his experimental tendencies in his music; pop, jazz, rock etc. He takes risks. Unfortunatley some people are still hung up on his Police days when he tended to be a bit arrogant but he's all grown up now people, and quite humble in my opinion. A very intelligent man.
Wtbyan 12/09/1999
He was great with the Police.
kenz2386rg 12/02/1999
What can I say but that STING is the Best!
