Perhaps the greatest--and certainly the most underrated--member of the "Fab Four."
oscargamblesfr o 01/30/2009
George's SOLO career, to me, was rather disappointing overall. After a couple of relatively obscure experimental/ instrumental solo albums in the late 60's, he put out " All Things Must Pass," one of the very best albums by a former Beatle. Arguably the best, in fact. Subsequent albums ranged from rather poor to at best pretty good, despite the occasional really nice tune. But really the highest points for him were The Beatles, then the first real album of songs, and then the occasional post- 1970 track.

he was pretty kewl

How could a Beatle not get five stars? Sure, there were plenty of misses - and the religion push might get a bit dreary sometimes, but the good far outweighs the dubious. Recommended song and album: "What Is Life" and "All Things Must Pass".

As with the other members of the Beatles, there are separate entries for the group and each member as a solo artist, so my rating is limited to Harrison's solo career. Harrison is yet another example of how the sum is usually greater than the individual parts because as a solo artist, he doesn't even come close to his efforts with The Beatles. Moreover, comparing Harrison's contributions to Fab Four and his complete solo efforts also strongly suggests that the former were his strongest compositions (allowing his former group to disregard most of his unworthy material). In simple and crass terms, Harrison simply had difficulty carrying a full-length recording by himself. Objectively considering his post-Beatles work, one finds that Harrison typically sounded annoyingly high-pitched, metallic, and almost chalkboard scratching at times, which is not helped in any way by his singing style or his affection for the sitar. The bottom line is that, as a solo artist, Harrison pales when compared with the vast majority of the other artists on this list, notwithstanding his often times crucial contributions to The Beatles. Nevertheless, Harrison did have his moments so most casual fans would be well pleased with a single disk compilation covering both his earlier years with Capitol and his later years with Dark Horse. Unfortunately, there isn't one of which I am aware; therefore, the desperate must settle for the two separate releases covering each period, "The Best Of George Harrison" (1976) and "The Best Of Dark Horse (1976-1989)" (1989).

Other than John Lennon, George was basically the only other WORTHY Beatle member. The rest were talentless. I mean George and John weren't all that hot either, but at least they did ok. But once again, this kind of music had its hey day, time to move on...bored with it, and have been for over 20 years. I really wished everyone would take the message of John Lennon...peace in the world...

Just because George Harrison WAS the quiet Beatle, it does not at all diminish the great contributions he made in music, whether it was with the Beatles or as a solo performer. From his Beatles hits such as "Here Comes the Sun" and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", to his post-Beatles career with songs like "My Sweet Lord" and "Something" (a song that his contemporary, Elvis Presley, considered the greatest song ever), Harrison was among the greatest (and admired) performers of his era. Though a relatively shy man, Harrison nevertheless was able to influence the music scene and furthermore devoted much of his time for causes which were dear to him such as his legendary 'Concert for Bangladesh'. Truly, George Harrison WAS a great.

I agree with Shane R. I dont think he had an impressive solo career. I think his best hit was "My Sweet Lord". Dark Horse was awful!
zebulonzachari ah 02/22/2006
Great influence in the beatles great solo, I love all things must pass and cloud 9.
kingguiness 05/18/2005
A great overall musician but not all his post Beatles work was that great. Of course All Things Must Pass was wonderful but subsequent releases were average. The poppy 1987 Cloud 9 was fun. His cover of the old 60's tune Got My Mind Set On You is a favorite of mine.
sfalconer 02/09/2005
This was a man who lived in the shadow of the two greatest composers of our time and he was able to write some great songs too. The concert for Bangladesh was the first Rock bennefit concert ever put on. All Things Must Pass is a great CD and some what ironic now that George has passed on. We will never see his like again
Skizero 02/09/2005
i love George Harrsion. I think All Things Must Pass is the best solo debut by any Beatles, perhaps the best solo album by any Beatle ever, but the rest of George's catalog leaves a good amount to be desired. his solo albums from the rest of the 1970s and into the 1980s are mostly mediocre affairs, the work of someone sounding like they are going through creative motions instead of pouring their heart out into the music. a few gems can be found on George's other albums, songs like All those years ago but they are few and far between. The resurgence came in 1987 with Cloud 9, a good, if not, solid comeback for the guy. but sadly, other than a few wilbury projects, George Harrison decided to stay away from recording, choosing only to begin again when cancer and mortality set in. the result was the charming album Brainwashed which was released posthumously in 2002.
Chalky 10/08/2004
he wasn't much of a solo artist so i question all the praise and can't figure out for the life of me why he's in the rock hall of fame? great as a beatle but overrated at best as a solo artist(with the exception of 'all things must pass')
Georgesgirl 12/12/2003
I hate it when I hear people refer to George Harrison as the quiet Beatle. He was an open-minded, brilliant man who unfortuantly was, and still is, terribly under rated. He was an amazing songwriter, overshadowed by Lennon-McCartney. He let out all his built up song writing energy on the masterpiece All Things Must Pass. He was a genious when it came to guitar playing and gave the Beatles a great sound in songs such as Day Tripper. His interest in Indian-Eastern religion and culture changed the Beatles music and the whole 60's generation for that matter. Although I'm only 14 years old (a modern-day Beatlemaniac), I know how to appreciate the wonderful person George Harrison was. He remained brave through his illness and continued to work on his absolutly gear album Brainwashed, which, I think, is much better than Macca's effort Driving Rain.He was an amazing father and husband as well. He touched everyone's lives with his talant, love and kindness and, of course his brilliant Liverpudlian sense of humour. It doesn't hurt that he just absolutly looked so gorgeous. That's right-I think George is HOT. Simple as that. I love him and he will always be missed. P.S. Geo is being nominated for some Grammy's this year, let's hope he wins!!
alty6905 09/07/2003
George was the only talented Beatle. I think John and Paul were trying to push him in the corner because he wasn't so flamboyant. The Beatles best songs were written by George (Something, Here Comes the Sun) and he blossomed by himself. I love the Cloud 9 album and Concert for Bangladesh. Wilburys also wrote some of the best songs.
Moosekarloff 08/18/2003
It surprised me that Harrison's death garnered relatively little public attention. Seemed like his death was a two-day story in the media, while some no-talent like any of the Crap stars who get blown away in those ridiculous nigga posse wars merits days of coverage in the propaganda mill known as the mainstream media. Go figure. Some slackjaw lardass mongoloid gets blasted and a Popular Culture Week of Mourning is declared, but when a central member of the most important musical group of the 1960s dies, it draws a day or so of desultory attention. Harrison was responsible for giving The Beatles their guitar sound, and he has not been accorded sufficient acclaim for this. He also produced quite a bit of fine music in his own right as a solo artist, did the Traveling Wilburys thing, and produced several movies through his Handmade Films. Although he wrote some very fine songs, working in the shadow of Lennon and McCartney proved to be a career-long albatross. Furthermore, he was a very rare creature amongst those in the public eye in that he didn't take himself so seriously, didn't put on airs and didn't think, in the Grand Scheme of Things, that he was so important at all. How refreshing!!!
wayland 07/21/2003
George Harrison continues to touch many people, his music is timeless, he carried himself in a manner in which, despite being in one of the most famous bands of the last century, was befitting. He is an example of such a transition we must all think about. Although his beliefs weren't accepted by everyone, he proved that faith can be found by anyone, even the wealthy and famous. I miss you George.
sounddude 07/13/2003
Just a quiet, kind, gentle soul, who for a time, rocked the world with his guitar! RIP George! And thanks for all the great music.
RebelYell1861 06/03/2003
3 stars for being the least resentable Beatle.
SGRANT 06/02/2003
I'LL MISS GEORGE A LOT. HIS 'ALL THINGS MUST PASS' WAS A BRILLIANT ACCOMPLISHMENT...THE BEST SOLO WORK ANY OF THE BEATLES EVER DID. STILL, HIS WORK WAS UNEVEN THOUGH THERE WERE MANY HIGHLITES.....PARTICULARLY 'BLOW AWAY'. A GREAT MAN.
getback 05/10/2003
For someone supressed in the Beatles as long as he was,he was a vital pert of their success ,as each was.On his own he produced great music which I hope will live on.His "Living in the Material World" was Great. The Beatles who spoke to me the most.He will be missed.
kingronnie 05/09/2003
The beatles were great, and he played his part, but he just didn't cut it solo. Much like Ringo.

There are many cliche comments about George being perhaps the most musical of The Beatles, the best songwriter in the group, or a better singer than many think. Grandiose comments such as these are baseless when comparing George to Paul McCartney and John Lennon. Yes, George was a multi-talented and, often times, critically underrated musician. I want to discuss George's guitar work. George was the best slide guitarist the rock world has known. He defeats Joe Walsh in the "neatness" category and Eric Clapton in the "doesn't play the same thing all the time" category. Even Elmore James whom George references in For You Blue, while poking fun at John's slide playing, has nothing on George. Listen to Give Me Love or so many of his slide-augmented songs. Without the slide, he produced incredible solos on the guitar such as Let It Be (Phil Spector's version) which is musically superior than his alternate solo with the Leslie speaker. His work on Abbey Road and Revolver proves his talent while absent of a slide. In the early days, he basically invented the sounds that the world has come to associate with 60s rock. We all know about the Rickenbacker 12-string. His solo career, commercially successful or not and everything in between, continued to show signs of a man whose talents grew along with his desire to be a student of music. Just listen to it. No man has done what George has on guitar nor will any in the future.
WilShakes1 01/16/2003
Uneven in his post-Beatle years, he still produced occasional gems.
Fredwah 12/12/2002
Maybe not a good as Lennon and McCartney, but still great. He took his own path.
Jason1972 10/22/2002
Yes, he was the "Other Beatle", but just as important. With such hits that he wrote and sang like "Here Comes The Sun", "My Guitar Gently Weeps" and the very important "Something", in which Sinatra called the most beautiful ballad he has ever heard, he was someone you could never ignore. He also gave us a few good hits during his solo career. He'll definitely be missed.
thompsontwins 05/08/2002
The most talented of all the Beatles, much better than Paul or John he invented world music!
emmyj1943 04/27/2002
There are no words to express how this man impacted my life. Just the way he talks, and sings, there's absolutely no other that can compare to the beauty and mystery of George Harrison. He's influenced the world and so many people-more than he knew. Many of his songs-Something, Here Comes The Sun, My Sweet Lord, My Guitar Gently Weeps, etc-are the soundtracks to our lives. He was such a nice, great man. His guitar playing was absolutely superb-no one can deny that. And Your Bird Can Sing is a perfect example. I've been a Beatles fan(and George Harrison fan) since I was 13. It's only been a year, but they're music has helped me to become a much more well-rounded person. Plus, they're all so so fine! Especially George-even if we are talking about music here-that man was hot! George was part of the greatest group ever, may he rest in peace. He definitley won't be forgotten. I can guarantee you this, there never will be another-not even close-to the great George Harrison
lnegrette 03/06/2002
It's too bad he had to push that Hari Krishna crap on everyone. Rock & Roll and Relgion don't mix!
Solenoid DH 03/04/2002
"What Is Life" is a great song. Technically, MacCartney was the most talented of the group. But George was my favorite. Long live the "quiet Beatle."
Errol 03/02/2002
He is one of the best rock guitarists of all time.
ontopoftheworl d 02/28/2002
Here come the sun, While my guitar gently weeps, something, these were right up there with if not better than some of the Lennon/ Mccartney songs.

hes a legend hes a beatle and my fav beatle ill miss him
ghlove 01/11/2002
I love George! He was an extremely talented and under-rated musician and songwriter. God Bless him.
genie1 01/01/2002
Highly over-rated. Only an icon because he was a Beatle. If this guy had come out as a solo act (same for McCartney) he wouldn't have been given a second look.
ellajedlicka21 12/02/2001
He is such an underrated guitarist. It is amazing that at such a young age, he knew what he wanted to do with his life. While the Beatles were playing in Germany in 1960, he was deported for being only 17 and thought about quitting! The man had his best friend Eric Clapton end up marrying his wife. His work with the Beatles as well as solo is classic material. I really love listening to Harrison's guitar on Day Tripper and his songwriting on Something. It's amazing that such a genius is now gone from our Earth. Unfortunately, he was sick for such a long time. He was a really spiritual person and introduced eastern music into the mainstream, especially the sitar. With the Beatles, he had the great songs of Something, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Here Comes the Sun, Taxman, and Love You To, along with several others. George had the first philanthropic concert effort ever in his concert for Bangladesh in either '71 or '72. His first solo album, All Things Must Pass, was a major success and he was the first former Beatle to have a successful solo album. Harrison had such respected work in the mid '80s and with the Traveling Wilburys. I remember vividly when he was attacked in his home in England 2 years ago, and also the rumors of his near death both this summer and in the weeks before he died. The world certainly lost a great man.
benfergy 12/02/2001
It's tough to see another member of the Beatles die. He wrote some great songs while with them, and his first solo album "All Things Must Pass" is top notch. He was a great person.
magellan 12/02/2001
As My Guitar Gently Weeps and Something are two beautiful songs and are worth a couple of stars by themselves. Beyond that, George was by all accounts a pretty decent, thoughtful human being...it's sad to see him go.
Molfan 11/30/2001
I was saddened to hear of George Harrison's death. I liked him when he was with the Beatles. He also made some good songs after the Beatles such as My Sweet Lord, and Here Comes the Sun. he will be missed.
ThePatriotfan 11/30/2001
How can you say anything bad about one of the worlds greatest guitar players. He is just amazing. I would love to able to play guitar like him. I am only 15, but I know when i hear something bad & something good, & believe me, he is is more than great. And what makes it even cooler is, he never took lessons from a teacher, he just learned from a very young age. I do hope though, that he feels better from his surgery. ~George Harrison, he was wonderful musician, & will always be remembered for being just that. May he R.I.P.~
MedgarEvers 08/29/2001
George is a great musician. He's not a songwriter like Lennon and McCartney, or a top 10 guitarist, and not oblivious to it all like Ringo, but George has had a great career none the less. His Bangladesh concert was a blessing, and he does have a great voice. The Traveling Wilburys were a superb group, and George wrote some great tunes for the Beatles: "Blue Jay Way", "Here Comes The Sun", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"...
TheFreak 08/29/2001
Decent. That's pretty much what I have to say about George. Decent. And he needs to admit that sooner or later, he is going to die. I feel sorry for him, what with a brain tumor and all, but it seems like he refuses to face the facts. Oh, well, that doesn't change his music. He's decent. Three stars.
callmetootie 07/30/2001
He's the only bad beatle.
Ruby 07/21/2001
George Harrison had a nice run from around 1968 to 1970 perhaps -- penning about 10 really great melodies, and maybe three or four that will prove to be timeless. But the rest of his catalog is terribly mediocre, if not downright terrible.
jlosux 07/15/2001
Very underrated as a guitar player, singer & songwriter..if it wasn't for George's influence we wouldn't have the guitarists we do today. If you listen to "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" you can hear a lot of the guitar that today, is still heard in music. Granted, Clapton was playing but George wrote the song. As far as the "weird" thing...and Michael Jackson, Kurt Cobain, Bob Dylan, etc. act normal????? It's the music not the pesonality or looks we're rating (although he was a cutie back in the day...LOL) Anyway the 5 terrible ratings were all by the same person; look at all their ratings & you'll see.
hectic_life 07/14/2001
Gifted musician, wonderful, spiritual man, his guitar playing while not fast is clean & beautiful.
likerealmusicn otcrap 07/14/2001
How many musicians do you know who can successfully re release an album 30 years later??? That speaks for itself. George & Ringo to me, was just as important to the Beatles as John & Paul. Two great bands, a great, although underrated solo artist...nothing but 5 stars.
