hiall those people who think that alice in chains was a mediocre band and was not a real grunge band are foolsThough Alice in chains was more heavier than nirvana and pearl jam but they weredefinetly as grungy in their sound. They also have so many hits to their name like man in thebox, nutshell,no excuses, rooster, heaven beside you, angry chair, rotten apples and many more. They were one of the biggest bands of the 90s playing main role in the formation of grungerevolution. But after the death of their vocalsit layne staley the band broke up.

Believe or not this band has very dyanmic style of music. They can go from heavy to darkest depths of acostic blues to the hazy static abyss of stoner metal. The songs are well written and although written nearly 20 years ago still are timeless. It's too bad the new singer doesn't sound like mr. staley. Personally I think they should have carried on with just Jerry on the pipes. I do state I am not love this band for the fact that layne staley died prematurely. Nothing I hate more than the James Dean complex. Great band with subtle diverse sound. Not too mention as a blues fan I can hear the blues in staley and cantrell's voices.

Hmm... like most grunge bands, they have five worthwhile songs at most. Fortunately they haven't been as highly raved about as Nirvana in recent years, so they weren't completely ruined, but I can't think of anything other than the (admittedly good) Would?, Bleed the Freak, Nutshell and Down in a Hole which I'd bother giving a second listen... Maybe get a greatest hits by them, but don't go any further than that.

used to love these guys

Alice In Chains got pushed into the grunge scene by their label. It wasn't a good fit as AIC was more metallic than alternative. They had some good songs in their heyday and provided some relief from Pearl Jam and Nirvana.
longleggs 07/08/2008
I like a few of their songs but I find their work pretty boring overall.
jdfallon 01/04/2008
Alice in Chains Rule!! I hate that the lead singer died! I seen them in Oct. 2007, they were great, the new singer is pretty good.
Limpin' Trenchfoot 10/15/2007
Listening to this AIC after a long break their stuff hasnt aged that well. Still better than most music called heavy metal.
XAgent 08/08/2007
I actually put about two full cds worth of their music on my mp3 player to listen to at work.

I can't say I've ever "followed" this band, but a friend who was more in tune with contemporary groups than I gave me a cassette tape with a sampling from various bands (this was the mid or late 90's). I heard the song "Junkhead", asked him, "Who in the hell is that?" and immediately went out and bought the CD. I've bought nothing else that AIC have done, but they performed some chilling, extraordinary music...at least on the "Dirt" CD they did. The song "Dirt" isn't up to the Stooges song of the same name that appeared on their ground-breaking "Funhouse" album, but it's a classic all the same, capturing the same sort of dark, miasmic mood. "Rooster" got its share of radio airplay (which means overplay) but it hasn't grown stale or any less evocative; if anything, it's a song that's gotten better with age. This is one of those rare CD's where even the "lesser" songs stand out in the memory (by the way, it's a great CD to work out to).

Not a huge fan of AIC, but I really like Man IN A Box and Rooster!!! The lead man Layne Staley succomed to the wild and wreckless and careless lifestyle of many Seattle rockers(Kurt Cobain). They probobly would still remain one of the most popular bands to this day had this not occured.
numbah16tdhaha 03/24/2007
Whoa, it just came to my attention that I haven't thrown these guys a five yet. I recently bought the Best of the Box CD and its been my most listened to CD this month.
RUDEE1121 10/01/2006
ALICE IN CHAINS IS AMAZING!!! THIS IS MUSIC RIGHT HERE. AS YOU HEAR THIER DIFFERENT ALBUMS, YOU CAN TELL THAT THIS IS A BAND THAT HAS EVOLVED...NUTS MAN JUST NUTS!
Wooooooooo 09/06/2006
Absolutely the greatest band ever. There is NO doubt ;-)
emerillagassef an 06/14/2006
The Best grunge band out of seattle (next to soundgarden of course) and it has everything nirvana does not, substance, better lyrics and better music, they were more metal then grunge. Layne Staley R.I.P.
Gromit 04/06/2006
GARBAGE! Watered-down, pseudo-metal meets grunge crap from that bastion of crappy rock, Seattle! Way WAY overrated!!!
errpt 02/04/2006
great band great songs great music
drumtool 01/06/2006
one of the all time greatest and they never sold out just to get airplay yet they were(are) huge who would not want jerry cantrell to play guitar for them now his riffs and layne voice the way he sang their songs was unique and to his credit (unfortunatly) he died doing what he claimed to love so much unlike almost every piece of crap that is out now(and then)and dont forget the rest of the band the drummer although it doesnt sound to diificult try playing their music the way they play and you will realise how great they were, as a whole. one very talented group of musicians, you might not like what they are on about in their lyrics but their musical talent was insurpassable by most.(and still is).
MonsterCookie 11/17/2005
My goodness! How could you not think that this band was a gift from the Music Gods??!! Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley's haunting lyrics.... Alice in Chains was a mind-blowing, soul-touching, and sweetly pain ridden. I could listen to the lonely hurt in Laynes voice for days upon end. Every day that I turn on the readio and here more of the Bullsh#t crappy conveyor belt music I miss people like Layne Staley, Kurt Cobain, Andrew Wood, Shannon Hoon and the others that have passed.
unforgivenvigi lante 11/04/2005
they need to be creditted for their kick ass songs and jerry cantrell needs to be creditted for his great guitar playing the man in the box solo is great as is dem bones.
goldilocks 10/10/2005
Jerry Cantrell is underrated! I'll never get tired of listening to AIC!
kingguiness 08/15/2005
I keep hearing these superlatives about this band and I just dont get it. They bore me!
iamfromhelltoo 08/12/2005
i saw alice in chains right before they made it big and i saw them again and again
maersk 06/14/2005
more whineyass horrid flannel rock from the capital of musical mediocrity, seattle so much for revolutionizing music
adrenalindef 01/25/2005
at a time when 80's hair metal was huge, alice in chains started playing there style. It was revolutionary for what was being pressed into MTV and kids heads at the time. They were the Beatles of the 90's. You can kill a revolutionary, but you cant kill a revolution. Alice in Chains is responsible for everything you hear today. everything.
mrthing2000 01/11/2005
Classic, cutting edge alternative. Only negative is Staley is dead, so no more AIC reunions. But Cantrell lives on!
Metal4Ever 12/26/2004
Best band ever! Followed them before the Facelift album, before anyone really knew them. Lived in Seattle for 20 years and saw the whole scene blow up. AIC was at the top of the heap talent wise, right there with Soungarden. Nirvana...please.LOL!
thisonegoestoe leven 12/25/2004
I think Alice in Chains were one of the greatest hard rock acts of the past 20 years. Layne Staley was truly an original voice, and perhaps one of the quintessential voices of his generation. Label AIC as grunge, metal or whatever, but the music this band made is timeless. Staley and singer/guitarist Jerry Cantrell were awesome songwriters, and their vocal harmonies were like nothing else in music at the time, actually like nothing since Crosby, Stills and Nash. A great band with a great sound that will sadly never be again. R.I.P. Layne.
1JohnDoeFan 12/22/2004
How could ANYONE not like Alice in Chains!!! They are off the chain. Songs that will live on forever. Man in the Box, Rooster. Classics, just classics!!!
Boyah 12/04/2004
Lane Staley is dead, he died a long time ago. I don't think he and Jerry Cantrell will be getting the band back together, being deceased and all.

One of the best heavy bands ever. Each album is radically different than the others, but all of them are strong. On one end of the spectrum they churned out the powerful grind of Dirt, then they gifted us with the acoustic masterpieces Jar of Flies and Sap.Stahley was an outstanding singer. What a shame he is gone.I was lucky enough to see them live at lollapalooza:they definately delivered the goods live.
Blanco~Nino 10/31/2004
When your'e in a really bad mood and you want to make everyone around you feel miserable and gloomy, than pop Dirt in your Car stereo and crank up the volume, and watch the smiles disappear!
afropath 07/29/2004
Alice In Chains is probably one of the misunderstood bands of the grunge era. But they are also the creators of Would?, Rooster, Say Goodbye Don't Follow, Them Bones, and other icons of modern rock music. They will always hold a special place in my vault of favorite disbanded rock groups
AliceInChainsM ama 05/20/2004
When Jar of Flies came out, I was probably 10 yrs old. I had no idea what rock music was until I heard Nutshell. It is the best Alice in Chains song ever. All of their songs are awesome, but that one just hits me emotionally. In all of the songs he wrote you can just listen to him sing about addiction. I think that is why I love Nutshell so much. I can feel his pain, and that is when I know I have found true music.
Led Zeppelin ROCKS 05/11/2004
One of the greatest ever...Rest in peace Layne. Angry Chair!!!

These guys revolutionized music. I love Alice in Chains. They will be missed. RIP Layne Staley.
kolby1973 12/30/2003
I couldn't tell you the name of the songs or anything, but there was a time or two I had great fun dancing, and drinking to their music ! All I can remember is that the DJ said it was ALICE IN CHAINS...awesome, intoxicating, dance music....
barfooz 12/29/2003
Alice in Chains is a band I have only recently discovered; I wish that I had known it sooner, before Layne passed away. They brought the angst-laden grunge rock movement of the early-mid 90s to great heights, and were more than just a heavy metal band: their mellower EPs, Jar of Flies and Sap, are full of interesting and moving compositions. Great emotion, great music.
Michellelee 12/21/2003
For those who were born in the in the 80's AIC put more than 3 CDs!!! Another thing, Lane may have have been a drug addict, but if you listen to music, watch tv, play video games or anything that helps you escape realty then you are no different! Lane's music should appreciated. He did a project in 1995 with the lead guitarist of Pearl Jam (Mcready) they're band was called Mad Season, popular song River of Deceit. That song was written by Lane and was about his own addiction. They could not continue because the bassist died. Lane knew he had a problem. He was also a visual artist and did the artwork on the cover of the cd. There was more to Lane Staley than a needle. And another thing. There is not a band around and never has been that sounds anything like ALICE IN CHAINS! The People who think so cannot hear! I was born in 1967 and have always listen to heavy metal music. At ten I was listening Iron Butterfly and Led Zeppelin. I know that the fastest guitar player in the world is the GREAT KAT a female who invented a type of music called Cyber Speed. Music will never be the same without Lane Staley. AIC was NEVER overshadowed NIRVANA, NIRVANA was good, but they were more teenie boppers, hince the song Teen Spirit. Then There AIC and Man in the Box. I see no likeness sorry.
joefly69 09/26/2003
They were a excellent band. Rest in peace Lane Stanley.
iAintNoSteer 06/14/2003
AiC is the only reason i am alive today. If it wasnt for the dark disturbing and insperational lyrics os Lane Staley and Jerry Cantrell i would not be able to express and have an outlet for my feelings, you can ease pain and let off alot of steam by litening to this awsome music by one of the greatest bands who have ever graced us with their presnece on this planet.
RebelYell1861 06/03/2003
They had some pretty good stuff throughout their years. Unplugged is especially good.
sk8ordestRoy 04/28/2003
aic was the best grunge band to come out of the explosion to mainstream. unfortinatly there greatness was shadowed by nirvana(another good band but 2nd to aic)and the suicide of kurt cobain R.I.P. Layne
samson42284 04/11/2003
they rock. "man in the box is a great song"
DeathRattle 04/04/2003
I have never seen AIC as grunge. It appeard more as slow dark metal. Whatever you call, most of their work was excellent. Instrumentally, the sound was very low but still melodic, hard , and intreguing. Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell together as vocalist created a hypnotic sound that was almost angel like (very differnt for this type of music). Though a good content of their lyrics delt with the lows and dark side of life, it went onto differnt subject matter as love, war (Rooster), make believe, etc. It's a shame the band deteriorated the way it did. Despite that fact, they created amazing music that will never be forgotten.
Moosekarloff 04/03/2003
When you consider this group, and others like Mudhoney and Soundgarden, it's a wonder that grunge made the impact it did. This is just loud, irritating drooler rock that takes itself too seriously. Poorly played and realized. Notable for its slow, syrupy melodramatic riffs and moronic hooks. This is music that should have been deconstructed and shipped off to Who Knows Where.
