I love Deep Purple.

It's Deep Purple do I really need to say more?
ILikePie 05/30/2007
Deep Purple produced some of rock's most memorable hits, and also have some of the most talented musicians in their various lineups. (Ritchie Blackmore, Glenn Hughes and even Joe Satriani on one of their tours). Some of Purple's music takes a while to grow on you, and it is more sophisticated than the average three-minute, thrash-it-out, AC/DC-style rock song. You might even say that here lies the first little spark of prog rock...

'Machine Head' and 'Burn' are pretty good but the other albums range from very mediocre e.g. 'In rock' down to pretty p*ss poor. e.g. 'Fireball' and 'Stormbringer' and the more recent stuff. I recently bought the remastered 'In rock' and don't see how it's got classic status. 'Speed king's ' alright, but not particularly great, but the rest is stodgy blues rock. So, 2 decent albums in a 30+ year career isnt that impressive.

I have never considered deep purple as a heavy metal band. They would more correctly be classified as hard rock. But there are now so many catagories and sub catogories of what rock music is that one group may bleed over into the other at times. Anyway, deep purple is with out a doubt one of the finest rock bands to ever cut an album. In the genre of hard rock they stand in the same company as any of the bands one would think of as being a world class act. They had style, not just gimmick, they had articulation, and not just speed, they had musical ability and not just reditive power chords that any garage band could play. Certainly not the greatest band of all time, but near the top as far as rock music goes. Groups like these dont come around too often.

Ritchie Blackmore !!!!!!!!!! riff master!
kingguiness 05/26/2006
True quality band. Perfect Strangers is probably the best comeback album ever. I was a metalhead before going alternative in 1986 but this a band that I will always like.

Deep Purple deserves 5 stars for their innovation, musical talent, and influences they had on the music industry. Firstly, they helped create Heavy Metal Secondly, Jon Lord (brilliant keyboardist, who helped popularise the Hammond as a rock organ), Ritchie Blackmore (brilliant technical skills in guitar), Ian Gillan (for an un-trained singer, he certainly has a dynamic range, hear Child in Time. Thirdly, not many bands have survived that many lineup changes and for so long, and still sound good. listen to (their popular stuff): Highway Star, Black Night, Child in Time, Smoke on the Water (duh)

Although they have done nothing particularly meritorious since their better than one might expect comeback album in '84, they are certainly one of the top bands on this list in terms of musical ability. Interesting career pattern and story, less of a true, pure metal/ hard rock band than people think; in their long carreer, they've done psych, pop, quasi-funk, ballads, blues, progressive rock, classical rock..i.e. a far more diverse band than they're often given credit for, with, at least, an above average person at every position- their drummer, Ian Paice, is especially underrated, he's great.

Way underated.

to that last person I read that pink floyd has sold over 180m records which you have to admit is an exaggeration, i'll take deep purple over pink floyd any day.

MUWAHAHAH!!! "SMOKE ON THE WATER ROCKS MY SOX"!!! HAHAH!!! Seriously, they're good... piano solos and guitar solos are too damn well coordinated!!! 5 stars...
iamfromhelltoo 08/12/2005
early heavy metal a classic metal band and they are so good live
JOHN HAYEN 06/27/2005
A fantastic old school heavy metal band. Most of their music that went main stream was good but stuff like Highway Star and Spae Truckin' really signify this bands abiblity to go beyond cover music and just plain JAM.
WOOOOW 05/16/2005
HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE SMOKE ON THE WATER? IT ROCKS MY SOX
Guava Monkey 02/28/2005
Purple deserve a lot more cred than they tend to get, even if just for the most famous riff in rock. Problem was that a lot of metal purists knocked em when they started getting funky as on 'Burn' and 'Come taste the band' both very underrated albums.
Brigadear 02/23/2005
Smoke on The Water classic, every kids that gets a guitar learns this 1 1st
Solo King 08/05/2004
Blackmore is the best and Deep Purple ROCK!
sfalconer 06/03/2004
Deep Purple is probably one of the most over looked bands in Rock N Roll. I have heard them called the poor man's Led Zepplin but that is not a true statement. They were an Album Rock band and their albums are good especially Live in Tokyo.
daisy glaze 06/02/2004
I'm biased here. Deep Purple is my favorite band, ever. In fact, any association is fine by me - Dio, Rainbow, Gillan, and by extension, Jesus Christ Superstar. It's all good.
ellajedlicka21 03/07/2004
How could you not enjoy Smoke on the Water? Deep Purple is a decent band in the scheme of things.
Tommy_79 11/19/2002
DEEP PURPLE IS THE GREATEST AND MOST TALENTED BAND EVER!!!
Jason1972 10/21/2002
They're music didn't really knock my socks off.

MKVII can't be beat! With the addition of Steve Morse, filling the shoes of Ritchie Blackmore, Deep Purple are now better than ever! Steve, from the Dixie Dregs, the Steve Morse Band and for a while, Kansas, has added his usual untouchable touch to DP's sound and DP are now happier than ever and it shows on their faces at every gig. Unfortunately, Jon Lord has just recently retired, allowing Don Airey, former Ozzy Osbourne keyboardist, to try his hand in DP. He is great, but no one will ever compare to the great Jon Lord. To sum up, if you don't check out www.thehighwaystar.com and stevemorse.com, you're missing out on the greatest musicians that ever lived....in my opinion! DP's #1 fan (and Steve's friend), Suzi (wolfsuzi)

Ardis 03/02/2001

jjmay 02/28/2001
Deep Purple is probably one of the most rocking bands of all time. Not only could they rock loudly, but they could rock fast! Songs such as Burn are outrageously fast and furious. They are also one of the best groups at improvising during concerts, too. For evidence of this, check out the album "Nobody's Perfect". The keyboard work in songs like Hard Road (Wring That Neck) is not equalled by many other bands. Terrific.
crazy_byrd 02/24/2001
Classic. "Smoke on The Water" will be played at EVERY bush party for years to come.....love their music!
Jami10489om 12/08/2000
70's legends that have some very underrated work in the 80's and 90's. Check out the classic Perfect Strangers.
fisheyedfool 09/26/2000
A great Rock group of he sixties. I can still hear their music blaring from the doors of Slick scud running over Nam.

If you have ever listened to Deep Purple's 'Purpendicular', 'Rage Against The Machine', or 'Abandon' Albums. All were done in the 90's. The Group (Steve Morse Replacing Richie Blackmore on Guitar) Still Tours (albiet not in the U.S.), just finished a 17 Date Tour thru Europe/Japan. They Recorded a Fabulous Live Performance Last September 29 at Royal Albert Hall in England (although not exactly Heavy Metal, this albums original shipment to CdNow was sold out. Go to Amazon.com or CdNow.com and look at the customer reviews of the album. You might be surprised.), though some of the music on the 2 platter album isn't Metal, it was a recreation of their Concerto for Group and Orchestra that they performed almost 30 years ago to the day (Metallica didn't have an original idea for mixing metal and symphony). I would predict if you listened to Purpendicular, you would find innovative music with some lyrics that you would come to expect from an aknowledged great lyricist like Ian Gillan. It is an album that compares in energy to any Rock artists present album and contains some of the bands best work ever. For my money, Deep Purple is still very much in their Era, I just wish they could get airplay in the US enough to introduce them to a new group of listeners that might know them from some song other than Smoke on The Water.
mail4375ch 02/24/2000
well, deep purple is even better than their site ;-)
Shafty 02/22/2000
Oh, Deep Purple... With the likes of Mountain and Nazareth of the early 70's rock scene, where art thou now? I never really understood how any of these bands made a name for themselves and sold so many records. I could not name a Deep Purple song if there was a lot on the line. I know their sound though, and know it is bad.
