People with their own sense of style and expression are rarely understood by the masses, but thank goodness they occasionally sneak through the cracks and make something truly original and soulful. Sure Macy Gray's voice is no where near as pitch perfect as what you hear on the ne-soul that passes for music theses days. But how many Mariah Carey's do we need. They are getting pretty homgenous. Macy's gritty whiskey-soaked voice is such a breath of fresh air in the highly polished and machine processed world of urban music. Billie Holiday didn't sound sweet and pretty either, but you knew that she had lived the life she sang about. So many singers today just show up at the studio and sing what they are told to sing. A true artist is unconcerned with the path that everyone else is on.

Why is it having a "unique" voice makes you a talented singer? I have a unique voice too, horrible actually, but I do not think they'll give me a Grammy award. All the plants have died in our office from being exposed to this trash.

Let's face it, her voice is absolutely terrible - it's painful to listen to and I imagine many people switch radio stations when she comes on. Perhaps she could find a suitable college course and switch careers - she certainly doesn't have any musical talent.

Personally, I don't get what all the fuss is about. Yes, she's had one big song "I Try" but that's last year's news. Her voice is.....ummmmm "unique" to some I guess, but to these ears its nothing but pain. I swear she sounds like she swallowed a man or has a frog stuck in her throat or something and sounds nothing like real singers such as Whitney and Celine.

Macy Gray has the most distinctive, wonderful female voice that I have ever heard. Her album (On How Life Is) is original and is full of emotion and depth. This is a fantastic album - and it deserves the critic praise it has received.

I saw her open for Santana, She has the worse band that I have ever heard in my life. I have heard better bands in a high school gym, getting together for the first time. She is an insult. The opinion was prevalent in the crowd.

The one song is extremely overplayed on the radio but the rest of the CD is really good. She definitely should have won Best New Artist at the Grammy's this year.
