Indeed, they undoubtedly qualify as classics of horror (albeit of the "human" or psychological style of horror) literature. The bulk of Jackson's short stories that I have read, however, are mundane and meandering. Much more interesting is the biography on Jackson by Judy Oppenheimer entitled "Private Demons: The Life of Shirley Jackson." A sad story, but illuminating and even inspiring, in its own odd way.

If literary merit is measured by the influence of an author on future generations of storytellers and by the length of time over which that author's work continues to be read, Jackson is unquestionably one of the "greats" of the genre -- and her work was not limited to horror.
