Good writer, excellent wit, which probably goes over the head of the cartoon crowd. Worth appreciating.

I love the way he manages to describe people and places i n a way that I though only I had noticed! Warm and funny in a lovely calm and understated way, a perfect traveling companion without the suffering the sore feet!

Wholeheartedly agree with Shroomwoman! Bill Bryson is absolutely fantastic at taking a subject that you would have thought would have been quite normal, like moving back to America, living in Britain, taking a trip to Australia and so on and so forth.... But he has this magic where when you are reading it you find yourself giggling loudly. There have been times when I have been sitting on the tube and I've giggled out loud (or snorted with laughter) and the next thing i know, I've got about ten people staring at me. If you want a laugh, read anything by Bill Bryson.

If you're in the mood to read some hysterically funny essays, try Bill Bryson's work. He's a genius at observing the funny side of everyday life- especially the nitty-gritty details you generally take for granted. In "I'm a Stranger Here Myself," which chronicles his re-entry into American society after living in England for 20 years, Bryson writes about the hotline numbers on products (you never know when you'll have a dental floss emergency), shopping, junk food, and barbershop disasters. While these topics may sound pretty ho-hum, Bryson has the knack for making them interesting and riotously funny. I really admire that kind of talent.
