Anthony Burgess (1917-1993) is the author most associated with the novel A Clockwork Orange, and the mixture of Russian and Cockney the main thuggish characters spoke, known as nadsat. In 1958 Burgess was told he had 12 months to live though the threat of life turned out to be a false alarm. Burgess went on to write many other novels, mixing the relationship between literature, language, and music, as well as addressing many social concerns of the day. Burgess was also an accomplished composer.
