Anthony Burgess (1917-1993) is the author most associated with the novel A Clockwork Orange, and the mixture of Russian and Cockney the main thuggish characters spoke, known as nadsat. In 1958 Burgess was told he had 12 months to live though the threat of life turned out to be a false alarm. Burgess went on to write many other novels, mixing the relationship between literature, language, and music, as well as addressing many social concerns of the day. Burgess was also an accomplished composer. (Add picture)

His output was prolific and he was something of a renaissance man. It's a shame that he is known only for A Clockwork Orange, although his later work deteriorated. He was much more than an author, but he was also an imperialist and a thoroughly unpleasant man.

Penned two noteworthy books: A Clockwork Orange, and the shortened Finnegan's Wake. Otherwise, the rest of his canon isn't anything special.
