An English poet and defender of Christianity, C.S. Lewis (1898-1963) is best known for his serial The Chronicles of Narnia, a 7-volume series containing Lewis’ most noted book, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Calling himself “the most dejected and reluctant convert in the whole of England,” Lewis’ writing gained in increasingly religious tone as the years progressed, morphing his most famous character, Aslan the lion, into a Messianic figure who rises from the dead after a crucifixion. At his best, interesting, but generally a kid's novelist. At his worst a pretentious ass with delusions of intellectual superiority.

His books were great but the best book was the Lion the Witch and the wardrobe because it was geared toward the Jesus story

The Narnia series varies greatly in quality: some books are very good, while others are rather poor. I liked "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" and "The Silver Chair" the best. However, while these books are definitely solid, he can't hold a candle to his friend and colleague Tolkien. His science fiction books always baffled me, and I could never get into them or even finish them as a kid. "The Screwtape Letters" can be preachy at times, but the concept was original and I find it to be a fascinating, occasionally humorous, and entertaining read. Lewis presents his opinions regarding the nature of good and evil in a well thought out way, regardless of one's own views on the subject. A clever and complicated work. "The Problem of Pain" was also noteworthy.

One of te great thinkers of the past 100 years, and most obviously, the greatest 'Christian' thinker.

His Childrens books - namely the 6 or 7 novels about Narnia - are great. His non-fictional Mere Christianity however is marred by very poor reasoning and logic (laughable, at times). Still worth a read, though. His Narnia Chronicles really can't be given too much praise.

Undoubtedly an amazing author. Lewis's eloquent words touch your heart. I am currently reading the Screwtape Letters and Lewis has once again amazed me. He is truly a godly man and it shows through his words. You cannot deny he is one of the greatest influential authors of all time.

Any writer who can be called a Christian writer has already failed as an artist. Though he is the closest thing to a real author that Christians would read, his work is no more than religious tripe.

C.S. Lewis is one of the greatest author's of all time. He is certainly the greatest modern day christian author. I just recently read Screwtape Letters, and it's amazing that in the 40's he was talking about subjects that are very current. You don't have to agree with him, but you can't ignore his genius. Mere Christianity has been praised by more theologians of differing denominations than probably any written work seperate from the bible. The Chronicles of Narnia is probably the greatest series of children's fantasy ever written. He was just an awesome author and one person that I would have loved to meet while he was alive.

He deserves five stars for his amazing writing ability and for introducing the world to the wonderful land of Narnia. I love every single one of those books.

An incredible author, with a wide range of works. I too am a life-long fan of the Narnia series, and am also finding delight in his Space Trilogy.

I felt that a number of the Narnia books were very good, but these were let down with books like The Last Battle and The Magicians Nephew

Intelligent but not arrogant. Witty but not disrespectful. His Narnia series holds very profound messages in it. Mere Christianity is a triumph of logic and clear thinking. He wrote many other great books like Screwtape Letters, etc.

"The Chronicals of Narnia" is the best series I have read to date. "Screwtape Letters" wasn't my favortie. The play "Shadowlands" which was adapted from his book "Surprised by Joy" is an excellent must see. Inward and Upward!

I think The Great Divorce was my favorite of his, though The Chronicles of Narnia and Space Trilogy are outstanding as well. If you like metaphor and philosophical thinking, you'll like his books.

My favorite author of all. I've reread the Chronicles of Narnia more times than I can count. I am reading the 3rd of his space trilogy now.... I'm sure I'll be rereading them too.

Basically, he was a racist, sexists conservative person. Just check our the Narnia books.

I have only read Lewis's Narnia Chronicles, so perhaps he wrote something else less objectionable that would warrant a higher rating. These were inexplicably popular when I was young; fairly standard fantasy adventures suffused with an overly strong, annoying, tenor of reverential importance to the whole thing.
