I've never seen a movie where the reviewers don't realise they are talking about themselves as much as the movie... Watch it and see which group you fit into, ie whether you have any affection for the world around you, or whether you evince your misanthropy with prolonged gurgling criticisms on websites. At risk of sounding pugnacious, what's not to like about this film? When younger, I'd get together with some mates and make crap short movies. There was rarely a plot, never a script and it was the most fun I've ever had... especially the moments when by pure accident you'd stumble on some cheap but brilliant 'special' effect. And sometimes, the final product would surprise everyone. 'Be Kind Rewind' is about that fun and that surprise, which I think is unique to film as a collaborative medium. This film actually tries to show you something important... Contrast this to the majority of Hollywood's output, which boils down to narrative cliches in support of a marketable gimmick. This may not be Gondry's best film whatever that means, but his integrity as a film maker is well intact and I don't think I've experienced such visual flair since Jacques Tati's Playtime.

Anyone who's ever watched a film and thought they could make the film better will love this one. While being a substantially budgeted film it has the feel of an indie flick, much like those the characters are making. The comedy is fun, the story is sweet, and it's an entertaining flashback to 80s media. It does seem to struggle between comedy and endearing human triumph, but it's a silly story through and through.

Another Michael Gondry film, this one was a hell of a lot better than 'Human Nature'! Not a great movie, but it was pretty good and entertaining. Hit a little too hard on the anti-commercialism message for my taste. But the scenes where they are filming the replacement videos are a gas, and it's easy to get caught up in their enthusiasm.

This is a silly but harmless fun piece of fluff, guaranteed to put some smiles on your face and give you somewhat of a feel-good feeling when it's over. I'm sure that was the intent, and very little more. It wasn't made to astound anyone or provide huge laughs. Yet, it has a lot of charm and subtle humor. It's a ludicrious story, so you just can't take anything seriously. The premise is unique: two guys converting a dying video rental store into a success by taking blank tapes of famous movies and making their own 20-minute versions! The new "movies" are so bad, they're good and the neighborhood starts making requests and renting them like hotcakes. Goofy? Sure. Tons of plot holes? You bet......but a nice movie. In additon, Jack Black, Mos Def, Danny Glover and Mia Farrow were all fun to watch. It's no award-winner, but you could do a lot worse.

This movie received very bad reviews but I just love it. Its more about just spending a good moment and enjoying, don't over complicate things and It is true If you love movies you will like this one

Mildly interesting idea, ok execution, not as funny as it should have been.

I bought this movie at Blockbuster, before ever watching it and Im sorry I did. It SUCKED if you asked me. It wasnt the Jack Black I usually love in comedies. It was poorly, acted and had a lame story line. Their were no real laugh out loud moments, like I had anticipated. I threw the movie away after I saw it lol.

The Swedes are Coming! Good synopsis by magellen leaves not too much else to say...Liked the Rush Hour remake - cutting edge special effects for the plummet from the building. One of those heartwarming lowbudget films, based on a good idea that had a simple but strong message and a cast of performers who were obviously enjoying what they did. Jack Black his normal OTT self (but we love you, Jack) and Mos Def and the female sidekick made up the team. Mia Farrow and Danny Glover included in the cast. Now I'm just rambling.

Uneven, more good than bad, semi-surreal comedy. Well worth a look

I've become a big fan of Michel Gondry - whether it be that cool video for the Mad World cover or the Science of Sleep. His gift seems to be making low fi designs and sets come to life in surreal and unusual ways, and this gift is on full display in Be Kind Rewind. The plot is over the top - Jack Black, living in a trailer next to an electrical grid, somehow magnetizes himself. When he visits his friend (Mos Def) who is working in a second hand video store and covering for his boss who is traveling, Jack Black magnetizes all the VHS tapes and makes them unwatchable. As a stopgap, the two friends start shooting low fi versions of the movies that their handful of regular customers want to see: Ghostbusters, Robocop, Driving Miss Daisy .... and this is where the movie shines, and where Gondry can flex his directorial muscle. The remade movies (called "sweded" films, as they allegedly come from Sweden) are hysterically funny. And just like Science of Sleep, the humor is underscored by a sadness - the battle to keep a small neighborhood business in a poor part of town from going under. The movie drifts perilously a few times towards a disneyfied parody of a happy ghetto, but manages to right itself. It's funny, directorially awesome, and maybe a little sad too. For me, it was worth it just to see Michel Gondry do his thing.
