One of three famous sisters, Emily Bronte (1818-1848) is the one with the least amount of output. Emily Bronte only published one novel in her lifetime, Wuthering Heights, a book so full of variant levels of violence and forthright language that it did not find a proper audience during Bronte’s life. It was only long after Emily Bronte’s death that Wuthering Heights gained the proper recognition. (Add picture)

It's hard to judge a writer whose misfortunes did not permit her to leave much to the world, and about whose life we know almost nothing. Everything she did leave, though, is weird and fascinating. Wuthering Heights and the poetry feel like they arrived in a bottle that's been swept ashore from some distant and savage island. Yes, Heathcliff and Catherine are a soap opera, as someone said, but their strange savage romance is much more Sid and Nancy than Romeo and Juliet. I see this as an insight into how babies and children, and at some primordial level all men and women, behave with one another. The poetry, too, is pretty fresh.

Emily Bronte was without a doubt a genius. Her essays, poetry, and one novel exude it. Yes, I love Charlotte, but even Charlotte admitted her sister was her superior. It is unfortunate she died so young and didn't leave the world with more of her work.

I am of the opinion that her great "masterpiece" was nothing less than the worlds first soap opera. That would be bad enough. The fact that it is in a difficult to read package is even worse. Who has time to plough through such drivel? It is obvious that the Bronte sisters were not around men much, but at least "Jane Erye" is slightly compelling.
