Undoubtedly one of the great drunk writers in literary history. At his best, in Gatsby and the unfinished Last Tycoon, he is brilliant, but all too often he settles for the trite the vapid and the simple, rather than the muscular prose he was clearly capable of.

Whoever doesn't like The Great Gatsby has no class.

A failed literary middleweight who should have spent more time in the library and at the typewriter than with his nose in the bottle. Fitzgerald wrote a charming autobiographical first novel (This Side of Paradise), many very fine, but dated, short stories, and one of the great American novellas (The Great Gatsby). The downside is that Tender is the Night, which Fitzgerald hoped to be his masterpiece, was disappointing, The Beautiful and the Damned was a mess, and the work he completed on The Last Tycoon indicated that his once promising talent was eradicated by alcohol, marinated out of existence. Fitzgerald was in his depth when he worked small, but once he started to attempt full-length novels, he got over his head. Add to that the fact he was entirely a writer of his time, and the end result is a canon that is uneven and antique. Fitzgerald's plight was exascerbated by the fact that he operated in the shadow, and deservedly so, of Hemmingway and Faulkner, who were two far superior writers (especially Faulkner). Fitzgerald is useful to read if you have an interest in American literature between the World Wars or are fond of the 1920s, his heyday. He can be a graceful stylist, and in some of his short stories he displays undeniable talent, but unfortunately, he falls well short of the mark.

Possibly the greatest American author who ever lived. His prose is just beautiful and he writes complex, interesting characters.

Gatsby is an excellent piece of work. I could read it 100,000 times and never tire of it. Everything else he wrote, however, is worthless.

Fitzgerald is amazing. The Great Gatsby is a masterpiece. I adore his writing style and the way he brings life and beauty to details that would otherwise seem mundane. I also love his short stories, and unlike many critics, I think Tender Is The Night was wonderful. The unfavourable criticism I have read on the novel showed me that many people did not appreciate it as a great novel in itself. They were so busy measuring it up against Gatsby that they missed the point and misunderstood the main character.

The Great Gatsby is by far his best work. I find some of his work sometimes difficult to get through because I get too bored with his tedious descriptive style, as Hemingway tends to do.

Aside from The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald's writing is not all that great. However, his writing style in Gatsby is just wonderful. Even though Fitzgerald isn't one of my favorite authors, Gatsby is one of my favorite books.

F. Scott Fitzgerald is, in my opinion, the best American author. I have read many of his writings, my favorite being the Great Gatsby
