Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was one the main proponents of the idea of “art for art’s sake.” That is to say Wilde, a playwright, a poet, and a prose writer lived for the same beauty in life, which he tried to capture in his writing. A lot of Oscar Wilde’s work came to symbolize the decadence of the 1890s, the decade in which his life’s work truly flourished. Some of Wilde’s best-known works include The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891) and The Importance of Being Earnest (1895). (Add picture)

If he had been a heterosexual monogamist, his fame as a writer would not be as great as it is.

The bard's greatest works may be impure in our minds (they were great to us before we were even exposed to them), but an independent study of other work really proves his genius. I consider Julius Caesar a timeless classic.

I've always been fond of Wilde's wit, but his writing is pedestrian.

Although his writing can get a bit Flowery for my taste, this man had wonderful descriptive powers and writes great dialogue between his well defined charachters.

Very over-rated in the modern society. Yes, he was fascinating, yes, he wrote well, yes, Dorian Grey is an amazing character, but that's what most people see about Wilde. He is rarely examined in depth hence his true genius is never visible.

Overrated lightweight. All surface gloss and about as deep as a thimble. Self-impressed with little creative sustain. He turned out to be much less clever than he originally supposed, which must have been quite a shock to him, and a lingering source of doubt to his present-day fawning, faux-sophisticated devotees.

The King, make that Queen, of the "bon mots!" His brilliant sarcasm still drips off the pages today. What were he with us today!? (Sigh!)

Queer as a three-dollar bill- and funny, gifted, and like Galileo he was completely unrepentant about his beliefs and views. And like Galileo, he was punished for it. Wilde knew his work would outlive himself because he was that gifted. This artist has my respect and admiration. Check out "The Importance of Being Earnest" for a classic example of WIT. Wilde is a true gem of literature.

I don't give a rat's ears what he did in his personal life. Picture of Dorian Gray---amazing. An Ideal Huband---amazing. The Importance of Being Earnest---amazing. In short, Oscar Fingal O'Flaherty Wills Wilde---AMAZING! And after all, none of us were even alive during the hype with the Marquess of Queensbury, so we can't well talk about it. I don't want to know the details. I'm going to judge him by his writing, and his writing is all...amazing.

A very brilliant man who had a sharp and witty sense of humour. I loved reading 'The Importance Of Being Ernest' and 'The Picture Of Dorian Gray', both were absolutely fantastic. I bought a book of his letters for my fiance as he loves reading his literature and about the man himself. You should read some of what he said, it'll have you gasping for air because you've laughed so much!
