The author of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Truman Capote (1924-1984), burst on the literary scene at the age of 22 with the publication of his first novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms, a self-reflection of Capote’s childhood and homosexuality. Capote was as popular for his self-publicity as for his books, often in the gossip pages, surrounded by the celebrities of his day. In 1966 Capote published In Cold Blood, a work he considered a non-fiction novel, following a murder case from beginning to end. (Add picture)

I'll admit that he touches near genius with "In Cold Blood."

But the rest of his work is frivolous tripe, and his fiction is dreadful.

One book, no matter how good, does not a great writer make.

The movie is the first intelligent and deeply focused film about an artist. The intensity and total concentration is exemplary. As for Truman Capote himself, I cannot believe how stupid and withering people's remarks are about Truman Capote. His sentences were dazzling and his ability to observe the nuances of character and situation were extraordinary. How pathetic that people see the movie and act arrogant and certain in their dismissal of a literary genius.

I'm with Moosekarloff on this one. Even though there have been questions about just how much of In Cold Blood was truly non-fiction, it's still a book of immense power, a true classic. I've never read his other books, but if he had just written In Cold Blood and nothing else, he would qualify as great and fully justify a 5-star rating. Unfortunately, through the years, he became a colorful conversation piece for the idle rich and squandered his immense talent. He died as something of a joke, an end assuredly hastened along by booze and pills. It's a story that's truly sad just from a human standpoint, but it's also sad when you consider what might have been.

Wrote a fine first novel (Other Rooms, Other Voices, published when he was in his early 20s), a well-known populist piece of garbage (Breakfast at Tiffany's), one of the great examples of the new journalism (In Cold Blood) and a lot of crap that should have been written on toilet paper. This is a guy who trashed his talent for the sake of being a darling of the pompous and insignificant cocktail party circuit frequented by pompous and insignificant rich folks. I guess to him, outre celebrity, getting stroked and lotsa free booze was more important than immortality gained by hard work, blood, sweat and tears at the writing desk. Poor Truman: ended up being this tacky parody of himself (and reinforcing adverse gay stereotypes in the process) when he could have been one of America's greatest 20th century novelists. Well, I'm sure he had fun, in his own way...

I'm not too familiar with him yet. I haven't read "in cold blood", but i did read a few short stories of his. He writes with a wistfulness, that is very sad and attractive

One of my favorite authors. In Cold Blood is excellent for an early work. His Christmas Memory should become a national Christmas classic. It is beautiful--I read it every year to get into the Christmas spirit.
