Considered the embodiment of the Age of Enlightenment, Francois-Marie Arouet (Voltaire 1694-1778), used his work to convey a commitment to reason, order, and tolerance. Often in Voltaire’s writing he used his humor to condemn tyranny and the uneven distribution of wealth. Voltaire is known for works such as Oedipe and Candide. Although through Voltaire’s work many considered him a hero of the French Revolution, Voltaire did not live to see such an event take place.
