Wallace Stegner (1909-1993) was the author of works including Remembering Laughter, Wolf Willow, and Angle of Repose. Stegner was an environmentalist and this philosophy guided aspects of his work. By some Stegner has been called “The Dean of Western Writers. Stegner won the Pulitzer Prize in 1972 and the National Book Award in 1977. Stegner refused the National Medal from the NEA, however, because he opposed government involvement in the arts.
