I was a little slow to catch the fact that every city had their own world champion wrestlers;Dick the Bruiser just wasn't interested. And because of it-around Detroit through the early sixties,he really was the 'People's Champ'.We loved him because he really didn't take no shit;he was with the Green Bay Packers for a few years-and was finally tossed out because he was considered a dirty player-I believed it.We watched him because we wanted to see what he'd do to get disqualified.Wrestling may be "fake" but with the Bruiser, you were never really sure. His match with Alex Karras, former Detroit Lions tackle and actor crossed the line.Karras questioned the Bruiser's football ability and the Bruiser started a one man riot at a bar Karras was coowner of.A cop ended up with a busted arm and Karras was basically told to leave town. The Bruiser told Karras to leave wrestling to wrestlers and to quit betting on games;Karras and Paul Hornung were each suspended for the '63 season for betting.I attended one of one of his more famous matches was with Antonio Rocca, who had a reputation for "clean wrestling";the Bruiser was finally disqualified after busting a piece of wood off the side of the ring and attempt to filet Rocca with.Everybody saw it except the ref.He is kinda old looking in the video;lst time I saw him wrestle he was probably in his sixties.I really haven't followed raslin' since he checked out
