I read Love in The Time of Cholera in two days. His characters are so well developed and thought out. 100 years of solitude is a little more of a stretch and the supernatural element is sometimes distracting for me.

I thought 100 Years of Solitude was incredibly well written in terms of how clear and expressive his descriptions were. I kept thinking how incredible it was that even through translation there was still such an incredible sense of what he was trying to express to you. Then I began to wonder if perhaps it wasn't as expressive in Spanish as it had become in English. In any case I would suggest reading him for the imagery alone. Although I have to admit I never finish 100 Years of Solitude..I thought it was a little too drawn out and overdone but hey that may be just me..

I appreciate the quality of his writing - he has written literary powerhouses such as 100 Years of Solitude, Love in the Time of Cholera, and the General in his Labyrinth. Be forewarned however, unless you are used to his style of mixing the real with the imaginary, you may struggle with these books. If you are new to the genre, I would recommend that you start with Isabel Allende, and don't try and jump right to Marquez.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez is the best living author. Read "100 years...." then read "An Evil Hour" then read "Diary of a kidnapping" and tell me who can write better? I am thinking of learning Spanish just so i can read the orginal novels. I am not generally so sad.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a great author. His writing encircles you, and you become a part of the characters.

Brilliant. Read the shorter works as well as the novels.

A tremendously important and moving writer. He's best in Spanish, and better still if you know something of Colombian history -- many of the 'magical realist' elements in his books are the coded history of his troubled country. But even in English, and without the historical background, he's a delight to read. My personal favorite is '100 Years of Solitude.' My wife prefers 'Love in the Time of Cholera.'
