alright but he's like a little, less-informed brother of Bukowski. plays the game too much.UPDATE: ignored the death of this man for the last month but now seem consumed with it. we lost a great one, despite my previously cranky comments about Hunter. He lived more of a varied life than most, and left the game on his own terms. Thanks Dr. Duke.

I was more than a little surprised to read that he apparently commited suicide (http://channels.netscape.com/ns/news/story.jsp?idq=/ff/story/0001%2F20050223%2F1212604871.htm&sc=1110, http://www.gonzo.org/); I'll have to see if I can verify the information, but it looks like he killed himself 2/20.

HST is a very interesting writer and I love his books. He has a good way of writing that kept me interested. I believe he is one of the best writers out there today.

Thompson's greatest work is Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail, which is one of the finest books ever written about that scabrous enterprise known as American politics. Hell's Angels was a pivotal work of 1960s new journalism and still holds up well today, even if some of it is dated. Las Vegas, his best known work, is an entertaining and darkly funny read, if terribly dated and a bit thin in its concerns. Most of his later work is pretty undistinguished, but that's to be expected of someone who downs a quart of Wild Turkey every day and took more than his share of 600 micromilligram journeys over the years. What I like about this guy is that he pulls no punches and does subject his readers to some thrilling rushes of language from time to time.

The 'Fear and Loathing' collection is one of the greatest series of books that have ever been written. The zany, out of control and sometimes ludicrous ideas make HST one of the greatest authors/writters of our time.

Very good writer. . .love his biting articles in Rolling Stone during the 80's and 90's. "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" is the 2nd best book about drugs ever. I will miss him when he finally dies of alcohol poisoning.

I absolutely adored 'Fear & Loathing' and like with Bill Bryson, it was hilarious enough that I end up giggling when I read it on the tube. I love the descriptions and how 'out there' it is. The writing is so vivid you can imagine it clearly in your head. In regards to 'The Rum Diaries' I found it less exuberant than 'Fear & Loathing' but the story was still surreal and mad, but a bit more in reality than the former. I still really enjoyed it and had trh imagery going on in my head whilst reading. I definately would like to get my hands on his other books.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is way overrated, but F&L on the Campaign Trail, '72 is a fantastic look at a U.S. Presidential Campaign. Thompson's look at the Hell's Angels and The Great Shark Hunt are also highly recommended.
