What some people fail to realize is that the American people are not stupid (well, MOST people aren't). We can spend our money just fine. When taxes are low, we tend to be more "willing" with our spending, thus pushing the economy up and everyone prospers. However, liberals in charge now want to raise taxes for the immediate situations, such as many of the silly social projects they have. This has a frequent tendancy to make us horde our money, slowing our (and through that, the world's)economy. They seem to be unwilling to trust the people to do what we can do to help our country to become the greatest it can be.

 | Redoedo (40) 04/10/2006 | The issue of taxation has often sparked considerable disagreement between the two political ideologies (and by definition the parties) in this nation, but neither side has remained consistent. In the 1960s Republicans generally prioritized balancing the budget above lowering taxes and in fact many of them opposed the tax cuts proposed by John F. Kennedy and passed by Lyndon B. Johnson and the Democratic Congress in 1964. Only in the past twenty years or so have the sides been reversed, with liberals arguing for tax increases in time of economic recession and budget deficits and conservatives endorsing the concept of supply-side economics as the most assured method of achieving revenue growth and a balanced budget in the long run. The differences are clear today--- but with the changing of times the sides may once again flip.

 | daedalus (33) 12/08/2005 | Generally the right prefers lowering taxes and the left prefers to raise. However, saying conservatives are not in favor of exorbitant taxes on anyone - rich or poor is misleading. While they may not "be in favor" of exorbitant taxes on anyone they are in essence endorsing just that when they cut taxes for the extremely rich (and no I don't mean those making 75K), thereby increasing the burden on lower socio-economic classes by way of greater proportional tax burden, cutting of programs such as job assistance, food stamps, Medicaid, Medicare, etc. Simply saying they are not in favor of "exorbitant" taxes on anyone is not enough. Action and experience count for much more.
Sundiszno claims "something less than 10 percent of taxpayers (those in the so-called rich category, to include people who make about 75K a year, which ain't rich, believe me) pay maybe 60-80 percent of the taxes."
Let me start by saying I don't believe you.
I don't know where these numbers come from, but only half of the statistic is correct and that changes EVERYTHING. While the top 10 percent do contribute about 65% of all income tax revenue they make a bit more than $75K. The top 10% make (on average) $224K a year. And this number has risen 88% in the last 30 years! (These figures come from the CBO report of August 2004 and Day Cay Johnston's -- Perfectly Legal, respectively.)
While $224K may not be the rich you are used to seeing on TV it is still a great deal of money to earn in a year and a great many families in the U.S. live off of less than that over a decade.

 | Djahuti (56) 11/30/2005 | The "Right" accuses the "Left" of being fiscally irresponsible, then goes on to spend like a drunken sailor. The Left tries to be a bit more honest and admits it will have to raise taxes, and loses.Evidently, people would rather turn over their money to liars.

 | Sundiszno (30) 01/23/2005 | Seems as though conservatives take the idea of conserving seriously and literally - they are not in favor of exorbitant taxes on anyone (rich or poor alike), whereas liberals seem to want to take as much money as they can, especially from the rich, or from the so-called rich, and redistribute it in the form of entitlements and handouts. If you earn your money, you ought to be able to keep as much of it as you can, otherwise, taxation makes you somewhat of an unpaid employee of the government (i.e., you are working, but forking over a disproportionate amount of your cash to the government). One could write volumes about the myths the liberals foster or perpetuate about how rich people get all the tax breaks, don't pay their share, etc. Take a look at statistics - something less than 10 percent of taxpayers (those in the so-called rich category, to include people who make about 75K a year, which ain't rich, believe me) pay maybe 60-80 percent of the taxes. I know I am off a bit on my figures (don't have current stats with me), but that's the general gist of things.

 | Anonymous (1) 12/27/2004 | You will always have to pay taxes no matter who is in power. Those on the left spend tax money on social programs such as social security. The right wants to use your tax money for unjustified, $100+ billion wars that lead to many people's deaths.

 | louiethe20th (75) 09/27/2004 | Very simple here...Democrats do not think people are capable or smart enough to make wise decisions with their money, therefore they take more of it so you will not waste it on dumb things like, your family and your future!Republicans think you deserve to keep your money and spend it the way you see fit, afterall it is your money to begin with! Then when you spend it it causes the economy to take off!Get the picture?
