The better-written the book, the clearer the picture in your head of how a certain character looks, acts, and carries himself. "Gone With the Wind" was a pretty well-written book, so I had some very concrete images in my head.I'm not exaggerating when I say that Clark Gable (whom I'd never seen until I saw "Gone With the Wind" a week ago) was the epitome of Rhett Butler's character, as I perceived it to be when I read the book. He could have walked right out of my head and onto the TV screen. As something much more than your everyday rebel without a cause, Rhett Butler's could not have been an easy role to master. But Gable did it.Mammy was the only other character in the movie that fit the description I had in my mind's eye.

A wee over rated- was very good in 'It Happened one Night' and I liked him in 'The Misfits' but overblown in 'Gone With the Wind'.

Looking back, I don't know if I've even seen Clark Gable in anything but Gone With the Wind. But that movie made such an impression on me when I was young that I can't even imagine him in any role but that of Rhett Butler. And although I only found him handsome about half the time, his film presence was so demanding that you couldn't help but look at and admire him. When I saw the newer sequel to GWTW, Scarlett I was wishing for the old Rhett back!

When I was watching "Gone with the Wind" with a friend, she cheered "Rhett Butler"(Clark Gable) on for finally coming to his senses and leaving the bitchy "Scarlett" (Vivien Leigh) in the closing scene of that movie. He did a pretty good job as Rhett, though I think Rhett might have had a Southern accent. Anyway, he was product of his time;women swooned over him back in the 30s and 40s as some women swoon over Brad Pitt now.

A total ham. OK in "It Happened One Night," but he had a good script, capable female lead to work with and a fine director to keep him in it. Also did a fine job in "The Misfits," his swan song, be he was also very well supported in that one. The man was born to play Rhett Butler, a role that fit him like a glove. However, you look at many of his other roles and the result is lacking: too much of the time he's just blustering and going through the paces, or merely doing his Clark Cable imitation.

really as famous as he is, I have not seen him in a lot myself. I liked him in Gone With The Wind, and It Happened One Night. He was good in both.I guess he was okay looking but i can think of other actors i found more handsome than him. At least he was in some great movies.

Gable was a man's man and a woman's heart-throb. He could play comedy, adventure, romance, even slapstick. For those who've only seen "Gone With the Wind", catch him in "It Happened One Night," "San Francisco," "Mogambo," "No Man of Her Own," or "Mutiny on the Bounty." You'll see what a versatile actor he was.

5 brilliant stars! No one could have pulled off Rhett Butler like he did!

What a sexy man. Everyone wanted to be Scarlett. If it weren't for Clark Gable's portrayal of Rhett Butler...Gone With The Wind would not have been the movie it was.

I have only seen him in Gone with The Wind. He was so sexy as Rhett that he deserves a 5 star rating. His acting was also good. :)
