The true purpose of the martial arts is not fighting (for the brawlers out there), or even self defense (a highly useful function of the arts). It's a lifestyle, when you decide to immerse yourself fully into your chosen form(s). It becomes part and parcel of who you are. I do not have the flexibility anymore to practice the physical portion of my form, but the mental aspects are still with me. I am who I am today thanks to the martial arts. :)

I just dont know how useful learnin' karate is now with the emergence of MMA. If ya only study marital arts, prepared to get destroyed by MMA experts since MMA fighters know mutliple fighting styles and are some of the toughest guys walkin' on this planet.

Very cool. I tried that when I was younger - not for me! I am not very flexible. Flexibility is very important in this sport.

It's stretched (literally) the core of who I could physically become. Highly recommended - you get out what you put in - but a highly skilled instructor is important too. Once you become proficient, you need someone who can push you farther.

Reylson Gracie Health Center Las Vegas. 17 year old teachers without experience and proper training, demand for money, constant fee increase, demand for advance payment of classes, and no training by Gracie. Money hungry and a scam artist. Be warned.

Trouble with karate and the more aggressive styles they tend to attract a lot of knuckleheaded tossers who only want to learn how to beat people up more effectively. I changed from kung fu to aikido, which is in fact a lot more practical to use in real life situations. Also, no-one can sue you for harm done.

Decent, but hard to find normal people that take it. I was forced by my dad to take it in high school. That meant I had to give up school sports like basketball and other games. Basically, I ran into athletic misfits who really weren't a match for me. There were also the students that believed all that Kung-Fu East Asian mysticism crap. I really hated them. There were only a few decent sparrers, and of those few, some really scary talented ones. Half the stuff about mental discipline and inner focus is crap. All you need to know is how to beat up people and to do it fast. I got a black belt, which I'm not very proud of. My dad paid for my lessons, therefore I believe that earned me my black belt. Don't ask me, but I believe it has changed me. People are way more afraid of me now than ever before. It's just the attitude that Taekwondo has put into me. So I definitely wouldn't classify myself as a joke. But regardless, if you're serious about athletics, play another sport and leave martial arts to the jokers.

Me and my boy have been doing Tae Kwon Do for 3 years. And what do you know, we're both black belts now. For the over 40 set, Tae Kwon Do is an outstanding physical fitness activity. It combines the best elements of Tai Chi, Judo, Kickboxing, and Yoga into a lively and interesting activity. Some more info can be found at www.ustkd.net .
