One of the all-time class acts in sport. He'll probably go down in history as hockey's last true franchise player as a guy who played an entire storied career with one franchise. He was a leader on the ice and performed at the top of his game up until the end of his playing days. Three Stanley Cups, Olympic Gold and he performed at the top of his game until his retirement.

Stevie is the best player ever, and the best leader. He shows class on and off the ice and never gives up. He is defenatly my idol and is a great example to kids everywhere. In my eyes Steve Yzerman is the best player to ever step on the ice forever and for always. He is amazing and I wish I could be just like him. He has heart, determination and above all drive. That's just what you want in a hockey player. #19 of the Detroit Red Wings is by far the greatest NHL player there has ever been and always will be.

Not in the same talent gene pool as Orr, Lemieux or Gretzky. Having said that, I'd want him on my team...a leader through and through. He reminds me of Orr in the way he has fought through pain and the way he lead his team through example. Will be very, very sad to see him go in the next year or two, but he has had a great career.

great player, one of the best of all time, but probably should be rated between 5 and 10, so i gave him a 2 to bring his rating down to a more realistic level on this list.

simply the best...look out gordie hes only 190 points behind your nhl totals...and hes closing in with alot less games played...go stevie! OH YEAH DID I MENTION THAT MARIO AND WAYNE NEVER BACK CHECKED! THEY MAY BE GOOD ON ONE SIDE OF THE RINK, BUT STEVIE DOES IT EVERYWHERE IN THE OFFENSIVE ZONE, IN THE DEFENSIVE ZONE, IN THE DRESSING ROOM, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY LEADS BY EXAMPLE WITH HIS HEART ...LONG LIVE THE KING!!!

Yzerman has done what very few players in the modern NHL have, including The Great One. He's stayed with the same team through thick and thin when he could've gone elsewhere for more money. He's LED the team to three Stanley Cups, He's fought injured and bloodied, He's never complained, and he's adjusted his game to fit Bowman's system. Federov? Who's he? (Oh yeah, he's the whiner who left for less money because his precious ego was bruised.) I'd take one Stevie Y over three Federov's on my team any day! Besides...look at the history: Yzerman is the one who comes up with the clutch plays when they need them, not Federov.

Stevie Y may not have the instant name recognition of players such as Gretzky or Lemieux, but since the late 90s, the rest of the hockey (and outside) world has come to realize what Detroit has known since he was drafted: Yzerman is an amazing and tenacious athlete who plays through pain that would cripple many of his peers as well as an unparalleled leader mainly through his actions on the ice instead of his words in the locker room. Yzerman is quite possibly the best two-way player to ever play the game of hockey, thanks in large part to the brilliance and foresight of Scotty Bowman. If it were not for names such as Gretzky and Lemieux, Yzerman would have been the biggest NHL Star of the 1980s and 1990s, a position that would have clashed with his quiet and private demeanor. There is no area, either on the ice or off, that one can criticize this man in.

Long-term durability, consistency, leadership, clutch performance... what more could you ask for? His talent level doesn't match Gretzky or Lemeiux, but he's very close.

The man went from being one of the most prolific scorers in the NHL to taking a less offensive role in Bowman's scheme so he could win 3 Stanley Cups. In the process he became known as one of the greatest captains in NHL history. The performance he gave in winning the 2002 Cup was one for the ages. He led the Wings in scoring the whole time playing on a knee that needed radical surgery. This man personifies hockey in my book.
