My personal favorite Nicholson character was the Joker. I just read an interview where he claimed he was upset that he wasn't even considered for the role in the new Batman movie.

Wow, this guy is a legend....even if I don't like the movie (witches of Eastwick comes to mind) I still think he is great. He has done everything from comedy to horror and succeeds at all of them!

Nicholson has been nominated as an actor for an Academy Award 12 times and has won three times (twice for Best Actor and once as Best Supporting Actor). He is tied with Walter Brennan for most acting wins by a male actor (three), and second to Katharine Hepburn for most acting wins overall (four). He is also one of only two actors nominated for an Academy Award for acting (either lead or supporting) in every decade since the 1960s; the other is Michael Caine. He has won seven Golden Globe Awards, and received a Kennedy Center Honor in 2001. In 1994, he became one of the youngest actors to be awarded the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award. He is best known for his films Chinatown, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, As Good as It Gets, Tim Burton's Batman, and Martin Scorsese's The Departed.

A consumate professional. Enjoyed almost every movie he's been in. Even the not-so-great ones.

Absolutely terrific actor, not to mention one that once made many a woman swoon. His manic smile could offten appear maniacal, but he was always able to charm the fans. My favorite movies:

Always seems to play a bad guy or kook. He's been around a long time, though and still is going strong. He could be considered in the classic category as well as current

One of America's greats of the silver screen, he throws himself at every role he plays with his whole being, he has never phoned it in. ANd he can play it over the top or understated with equal pinache. Along with Michael Caine he is having one of the finest "third acts" in the history of movie careers, selecting roles that capitalize on his age and experience instead of denying them.

Jack is one of a kind. He's got excellant on-screen presence, of course, but he creeps me out a little.

I have to say that I absolutely love this man! He is in some of my all time favorite movies with "As Good As It Gets" right at the top of that list. I have not seen all of his work, but I can't think of anything that I have watched with him in it that I didn't like.

He was in so many great movies and I think his acting is terrific.

Probably the creepiest and strangest actor still around, but still does movie roles good. Scary as hell in The Shining.

From watching him courtside at Laker games and listening to his views on things when he makes appearances on talk shows, I don't think I'd care to know him personally. However, he is one heck of a versatile actor. His persona in "The Shining" has to be one of the most riveting of all time.

Look, I love Jack. . .but he's been gravy-training the same schtick for 30 years. . .not that he isn't entertaining- but he's somewhat overrated as a 'great' actor despite some memorable roles. He's good at what he does and he does a terrific job of staying in his comfort zone.

I have liked many of the movies in which he stars; but face it folks, he always plays the same part. He always plays Jack "smartass" Nicholson. I guess that's ok since he gets all the adulations.

He's had more sorry roles than good ones. To me he's overrated and acts with the same expressions on his face over and over again. It got to the point that when he was in a movie, I couldn't see his character...only Jack. I won't even watch anymore films he is in because I know I will not like them.

Very good actor. A natural talent. I think he is best at the funnier movies but I really liked him best in The witches of eastwick and Terms of endearment.

The best role ever was him playing the Devil but he is great in everything imho.

As a thespian, Nicholson stands with the Gods. Indeed, I rate him as the greatest cinema actor of all time - a star who has played characters ranging from the exquisitely complex to the manically boisterous. Jack seduces...and how!

Anger Management was hilarious

It's hard not to compare the contemporary careers of Jack and Bob DeNiro. Both are actors of extraordinary talent. DeNiro seems to have resigned himself to doing unchallenging roles in uninspired movies, which gets him a steady paycheck but I can't imagine he takes much pride in his work of the past 10 or so years. Nicholson, too, has made his share of average, even mediocre, movies. Just when you start thinking he's going to reprise his patented Nicholson shtick yet again, he astonishes you with the power and intensity of his performance. I can never forget his role in Hoffa. Not a great movie, but Nicholson was astonishing. In 10 or less minutes, I forgot I was watching Nicholson. I was watching Hoffa. To me, the hardest thing for an actor to do is play someone famous from our own lifetimes. Anthony Hopkins did it in Nixon, Bruno Ganz did it in the recent Downfall, and Nicholson did it in Hoffa. A truly extraordinary actor. Yes, he'll do something trite like Anger Management but he'll also be in something like About Schmidt. If he's not the best, he's one of America's best actors.

I've been watching and loving his movies for years. His best roles were in one Flew Over The Cukoos Nest and As Good As It Gets. Hell, I evern loved him in Witches Of Eastwick. He steals the show in every movie he's in.

Facsinating actor (maybe not a lot of range, but who cares?) I can watch anything with him in it.

No questions hands down the greatest actor of all time- 16 Golden Globe noms- seven wins and 12 Oscar noms- three wins. I would have given him a 5 except for all of his most recent work has done nothing but deeply disappointed me.

A good actor, but overrated in my eyes. He usually uses the same facial expressions over and over again. i do enjoy him though.

jack the lad, who better to play the joker in batman, the shining was class so was one flew over the cuckoo nest. jack is ugly but his acting is nice hehehe never rub another mans rubarb

Jack Nicholson isn't one of my favourites, but he's decent, and some of his movies are pretty good.

Acts the same in every role, and delivers just about every line in the same fashion. His eccentricity makes him useful in some roles (The Joker), but his actual acting skills are meager at best.

Jack Nicholson is probably the best actor known to man. His brilliance is un-comparable, his methods are vast and un-comprehendible, and his looks, well, they leave something to be desired. He is, easily said, the best and the greatest theater actor of his time.

GREAT...just one word

He is the king. The simple acid test that makes him one of my favorites is that I seek out any and all movies he is in. His protrayal of McMurphy in Cuckoo's Nest was stellar. Lately, Jack's recent run of movies seem like Jack is playing himself; but most men truly wish than can be like Jack.

Jack is the Man. No one like him. He can play anyone in an extraordinary fasion. Love all of his roles. Each one a true work of art. No one does insanity like him. Like to write a script for Jack & Anthony together...Profound insanity & genius played by the masters.

Used to be great. Chinatown is a must see, along with One Flew Over...etc. Have a feeling now no longer plays roles but more of the Jack Nicholson now starring in... scenario. Not necessarily his fault, his persona has just become larger than any character that he might play.

I like Jack Nicholson and I like a lot of his movies he's in. He's become a legend because of his style and charisma. However their are and have been better actors than him. He's good at he does, but his approach to a role is basically the same. His best role was as Warren Schidmit in About Schmidt because he is actually acting in that movie and it is so different from the real Jack Nicholson. I give him 5 stars because I do like his performances in movies such as One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Batman, The Shining, As Good As It Gets, Something's Gotta Give and more.

A very overhyped actor with no talent whatsoever, I just never really understood why everyone coos over him...and even the overrated movie titled THE SHINING didn't do it for me, it just proved to me more how lousy his acting truly is. If he has any good credits to his name, I guess I would have to say he did good in TERMS OF ENDEARMENT and maybe in ONE FLEW OVER THE COOCOO'S NEST....but even then it is pushing it...

The only role Jack Nicholson knows how to play is Jack Nicholson.

This list is full of crap if Jack is not in the top five! He is the best in the business with DeNiro and Hanks right now. Come on, people! What have you been watching all these years!

He plays a good psycho-path villian. But I don't know if he's that great of an actor. Maybe it's just me.

Very charismatic and with truckloads of star quality, but not technically an actor. An actor is someone who reads a script, figures out who the character is, and plays the part. Nicholson is a guy that movie roles are specifically designed FOR. He shows up and delivers his lines as himself, time and time again. He has two deliveries: 1. Slow and deliberate with underlying menace, and 2. Shouting. Still, he does have undeniable charisma, so it is hard to give him less than 3 out of 5. He also possesses Hollywood's best grin, if that counts for anything.

The legend.

Jack Nicholson, along with Robert De Niro, is the greatest living actor. I don't care what anyone else says. He plays diverse characters, giving each of them memorable places in movie history.

I think he has moments when he capitvates the audience and takes over the scene with his powerful acting. However, i find him a little frightening at times. He sometimes overdoes it. Also, he has the problem that he has almost the same character all the time and its hard to imagine that he isn't jack nicholson and he's supposed to be someone else.

Jack should be in the top 5 of this list. An excellent actor and another one that directors fall over themselves to direct.

Anyone who doesn't like Jack Nicholson, doesn't know a great actor. He is old, yes, but one of the greatest of all time. He really makes you feel the character he plays...I'm not naming a certain movie since he rules in all. Actually, here are a few I suggest you see: AS GOOD AS IT GETS, ANGER MANAGEMENT AND THE SHINING. Want to know more Jack movies? Search for them on google.

I love every movie that he has been in. No matter what age he can play a charector we love, or a charector we love to hate. He makes going to the movie's worth while.

I agree with previous sentiments...Jack only portrays...Jack. However, he managed to play himself very convincingly at times. And for that, he gets a second star.

Nicholson is a Jerk! Last night he stood up and screamed at an NBA ref because HE disagreed with some calls. So F--k--g What! Sit down and shut up! You're no better than anyone else watching the game and your opinion sucks just like you do. Someone should knock you on your ass and crush your nuts to give you a reality check.

Jack.....What a crazy Guy!!! That's what makes him interesting to watch! Who cares if he acts like he does in real life.....he makes movies hilarious. So who ever thinks he's not good on the movies.....needs to get a stick out of their ...!! That's what I think

Jack Nicholson deserves his spot on this list, as he truly is one of the greatest actors probably of all time. In every film that I've ever seen him in, he's always brought something special to the screen. I really loved this man for his excellent performance as The Joker in Batman. However, I have two films that are both my favorite Nicholson films- "Terms of Endearment" and "As Good as it Gets". Both films are in the Romantic-Comedy genre, and his performance in both were memoriable, espescially in the latter, where he played the role of the superstitious Marvin Udall so well. He was also impressive in "The Crossing Guard", "Wolf", "A Few Good Men" and "The Plege". I'm sure that Anger Management will be another great film too.
