Too bad so many of you confuse the fact that you 'like' this guy with the NON-fact that he was one of the all time greats (he most certainly WASN'T!).Question? Without the aid of pharmaceuticals, do you REALLY believe this guy would have had his own thread in a forum like this? A good player who never would have been considered 'great' without the aid of juice, and every bit as much a cheater as Bonds, Sosa, Palmiero, etc.

Terrible! If you were to take out his 70 homerun year you would be hard pressed to rank him on any list.

For some reason, I think the cheap plastic sleeve that holds my Mark McGwire rookie card is worth more than the card itself.

What can I say? He was my favorite baseball player growing up, and he is my favorite baseball player of all time. The memories I have watching him play are some of the most treasured memories I will ever have. I cried the day he got traded from Oakland to St. Louis because I knew it was the end of an era. I cried the day he retired because I knew that baseball, for me, would never be the same. Call him what you want, but to me he was the greatest home run hitter of all time and nothing you can tell me will ever change my mind.

Sure was fun to watch him in his youth just pound that ball out of the park. Could have been the Joe Dimaggio of his era. . . handsome, well-liked, charismatic. Too bad his legend is now tainted forever.

Cheater.

Had he not been injured so much, 800 would have been a sinch for him
CapAnson 09/03/2004
Every once in a while he would actually hit for a high average.. but I think he inspired Bonds to juice it up.

Great player, but his career was WAY too short.
Jimbo04 07/25/2004
McGwire was one of the best home run hitters ever! Home run #70 in 1998 was the most shocking. I really couldn't imagine at the time that anyone could ever hit 70 home runs in a single season.

Wish he would have played one more year to get to 600!

Top 40 certainly

TREMENDOUS POWER....IF SOMEONE HAD TO BREAK MARIS'S LONG-STANDING RECORD IT COULDN'T HAPPEN TO A BETTER GUY THAN MCGUIRE OR SOSA...WHAT AN EXCITING, MAGNIFICENT RACE THAT WAS...ONE OF THE GREATEST THRILLS EVER.

a good player but i would never have built a team around him, canseco was a better allaround player in his prime than mcgwire. if mcgwire would ahve been black or latin, it was because he was white that people jumped on the bandwagon..a moroe publicized gorman thomas

Best HR Hitter Ever

what an overrated steroid freak

One domensional player. Best home run hitter ever, but his fielding was marginal
Mudskipper 01/13/2001
Don't over analyize this guy or you"ll forget what's truly great about him. He could outrun Ruth, out pitch Ruth, and out field Ruth, and hit 70 hr's so therefore I think he should be a little higher on the list.
Johnny Roulette 01/09/2001
only injuries kept him from hitting at least 800 HR. However, his defensive isn't Gold Glove material. His average is rarely great. There's is no speed at all in those legs. Why do they pitch to him? The old-timers would have put one in his ear before they'd let him hit 70 home runs!

One of the best all around batters today. Not just for ability, but for his modesty. The first to tell you that he is just a regular Hoe.

Big Mac is overrated (drugs).
GTE51142DU 11/13/1999
Mark McGwire is so over-rated he doesn't have to face pitchers of the likes of Nolan Ryan or Pedro Martinez for that matter. Baseball should raise the pitchers around a good 6 inches again.
