Pat Summerall is a legend in sports broadcasting. Who could forget his unmistakable voice and playcalling combination with John Madden? He definitely brought his unique approach to the game and always did a great job. He's definitely one of the best announcers out there.

When he was with either Tom Brookshire or John Madden the chemistry was great. Those were the days (I say that often about a lot of things).

In his day there were none better. Never mind the fact that ol' Pat and his drinking buddy..i mean fellow announcer.. Tom Brookshire were drunk off their asses half the time, they could do a great game.

one of my all time favorites. time has not been kind to him, but he was the man back in the 80's when it seem's as if he did every 49er Redskins or Cowboy's game. He is a legend and has a very good voice and sense of humor

I liked him in the early nineties, but unfortunately, the game has passed him by. He should've retired years ago.

Always needed to be held up by Madden. Seemed to be corrected by Madden to often . Slurred his speech to much. I always suspected he was drunk or near-drunk. when on air.

One of the greatest ever. He has a great voice, and even though he played in the NFL, that's not all he knows. He is also good for golf, tennis, and wasn't bad for the NBA Finals on CBS in the early 1970s.

Dead. Sounded like he was drugged up on SNF when he was replacing Patrick.

I like Pat but he is to old I have to say he did a good job on Sunday night.

Still going strong even after a liver transplant, and he is back on ESPN's Sunday Night Football.

Pat Summerall is one of the great of our lifetime behind the microphone for the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE! Howard Cosell, Jack Buck, Harry Kalas, Bill King, Keith Jackson, Dick Enberg, Al Michaels. I can not begin to imagine being brought up listening to anybody else bring John Madden along...just think about John Madden rambling with Marv Albert - YIKES

One of the few greats.

old and tired

Ten years ago, I would've given Summerall five stars. But I'm afraid the precipitous decline in his skills over the last couple of years can't be overlooked. Fox was right to remove him from their national "A" team, and for his sake I wish he'd retire from the booth altogether and start doing voiceover narration for NFL Films. He's still got that fabulous voice, and working from a script he wouldn't have the problems that live game situations now saddle him with.

Consistently high quality for over two decades.

Classiest NFL announcer in a profession filled by bombastic poseurs trying to be cool. I think he will be remembered as one of the greatest announcers ever.
mprater 03/04/2003
For all time NFL announcer, he's my pick!
boomer9999 02/08/2003
He was ok in his prime. I don't think he even knows where he is during broadcasts anymore.
BigBadTA 11/29/2002
Summerall was an excellant announcer, maybe he stayed too long, maybe he aged quickly, but you would age quickly to if you had to listen to Maddens ramblings every week. He's the one who had to sit there and try to explain Maddens completely ridiculous comments constantly, let's face it, it was a high stress job next to that stupid oaf.
daddio1015 06/21/2002
Too old !!!! He needed to retire 10 years ago.
Munson 04/08/2000
His rating is only this high because of what he has done. Unfortanately, however, Pat has lost it. He makes far too many mistakes and has trouble keeping up with the plays. It is time for Fox to make the move and find a new partner for Madden.
Ruby 04/07/2000
In giving three stars, I'm being generous in my rating of Summerall. Why? Because he looks so much on the verge of dying that I'd feel pretty sad if that happened and I'd panned him.
magellan 04/04/2000
I hate to say it, but this guy has gotten old in a hurry. One minute he was on top of everything, and the next he seemed to have lost a step. It's going to be a sad day when they move the still sharp Madden to another play by play guy.
