Another large breed dog that requires extensive obedience training. Great around families and friends, but needs room to run and play. If you don't like long haired breeds you should consider something else for a pet. Mostly because you will be spending days on end brushing and grooming this dog.

This is a tough dog, and if abused can be mean.

Great dogs - friendly, energetic, loyal, etc. But not for everyone, given their size and needs for regular exercise.

**UPDATE***   First of all, the description, which I have just now read is inaccurate.  The AKC put these dogs into the Mastiff group, while then saying the origins are uncertain ~ other than they are in the Swiss dog family (the largest of four ~ and the hairiest).  They also have no weight standards for this breed (thank goodness, because mine, at almost 8 months, is over 100 lbs.).  As for the drooling ~ they will not do this (they have dry mouth), unless they are not full bred.Love my boy!!  He is still a puppy (3 mo.s),  but, smart as a whip.  Caught on to commands within 2 days ~ hard to housebreak though.  Walks by my side as oppossed to in front.  Great with kids, cats and other dogs.  VERY LAID BACK.  Not too keen on the Brittany pup next door ~ too hyper for him.  Would do GREAT as a second dog to a Senior.  Slight burts of energy, then docile (this is as a puppy).

I've never heard of these before, but from the picture and description, they sound like a good dog.

Great dogs, good with kids and a great "family" dog. Good personality, loyal, brave and loveable. Bernese Dogs should be treated as a family member and live inside the house. Needs consistent grooming and sheds a lot. Be prepared to vaccuum a lot. They do not drool. Please feed any dog a quality food and stear clear of those commercial foods with poor ingredients. Always be prepared when you get a dog, don't do it on impulse or give a Dog as a gift. The dog any dig will have a great life if you are prepared to take good care of them. TO many parents get their kids a dog and just say "you have to take care of it" but they don't teach or explain what that is or have any accountability in raising the dogs. Please love your dogs no matter what breed. Bernese Dogs are GREAT !

This is the most people oriented dog I have ever known...they will lay on your feet, lean up against you and dote on your very presence. A wonderful companion and friend!

Possibly the best looking breed of dog. Kind of like a slightly smaller, slimmer Saint Bernard that doesn't drool as much. Seem very good-natured, too.

Huge, good-natured dogs. They seem to get along really well with just about every other kind of dog, and it's pretty funny to see such a large creature palling around with a tiny little Jack Russel Terrier. It's like "Of Mice and Men" for dogs, with the Mountain Dog as Lennie.
