 | drkseph (5) 01/11/2008 | My grandma used to breed Irish setters but now in her old age she shows them. She currently has three setters but I'm not wholly fond of them. The reason why is that they are fairly high strung and require firm and consistent obediance training, and she doesnt believe in obedience training. Says it will confuse them when it comes to their show training. The dogs are very, very great, well-behaved and obediant in the ring, and shes won many blue ribbons. However at home its another story. They are hyperactive, stubborn, slobber alot, disobediant, destructive to her possesions and pee in the house.
Beautiful dog, but needs good basic training or else they definitly act stupid.

 | kariart7 (0) 07/10/2006 | these beauties are very friendly, playful also smart.you need to train them at a early age with a loving touch..sensitive and stubborn.but the results will turn out to be a great, loving&loyal dog.

 | FranksWildYears (60) 02/24/2004 | We had one when I was growing up. Very affectionate, possesive actually. Loved to run so we got a lot of exercise. In spite of their reputation we didn't find her to be dumb. We never tried to teach her math or anything, but she could do the basics.

 | StanUzbeck (16) 11/19/2003 | Irish Setters are very affectionate, lovable dogs, but dumb as bricks. These morons basically cannot be trained to do anything other than waiting until they're outside before lifting their leg. Other than that, they're lovely dogs.

 | earthleopard (0) 04/23/2003 | We had an Irish when I was a kid. It had been abandoned by owners, probably because of an under bite that made it appear to be snarling. It was intelligent and gentle with us kids, but made a great watchdog. This dog took on a german shepard, running it home, when it thought I was going to be hurt by it. Big hearts and they love their families!

 | Millifer51 (0) 02/17/2003 | Never having met an Afghan Hound, I can say without fear of contradiction that Irish Setters are the dumbest dogs I have ever seen. I have known several over the years, and each was dumber than the others. How these useless turd mills ever got to achieve a three-star rating is beyond me. I can only assume that professional breeders of Irish Setters are trying to get in some good PR for their own misguided enterprises.

 | Shroomwoman (13) 04/14/2000 | I hate to say anything negative about a dog breed, but I really don't like Irish Setters. I find them hyper, slobbery, and not very intelligent. The only thing they have going for them is their beautiful coat.
