 | rae8610 (0) 05/08/2008 | Doubling up on breeds that have common health problems has to be, by far, the dumbest breeding ethic out there. These breeders clearly have no medical awareness of what they are doing and unfortunately neither do the poor innocent pet owners being scammed into buying these dogs. These breeders claim no health testing is needed for this newly developed breed because they are so healthy.

If you guys want to find "Healthy" mutts, go to your local Shelter and Adopt. As that's exactly what your going to have in a few years anyways, for a MUCH lesser price. How many "Designer" breeders do you know that include at minimum a Two Year Genetic Health Warranty. Not Congenital but Genetic. None, that's right. If there dogs are so Healthy why arent they being Health tested? OFA and CERF both allow mutts in the registry. Think people, Think.
If you want to adopt from a shelter or rescue I am behind that 100% and you will have nothing but my most admiration for doing so. But to spend over $1000.00 on a dog, whose breeders are nothing but a glorified PM is just ridiculous.

 | oscar11 (0) 04/21/2008 | There is ample evidence that mixed breeds, whether dogs or some other animal, have a range of benefits, such as maximising hybrid vigour and lessening inbreeding depression, which impact on their health, longevity, etc. An informative page on this which may be of interest is at this link.

 | MrTuner (6) 04/11/2008 | Mutts are the best! If you thin kabout it though all dogs are mutts except ones from the wild and stuff! This is because most breeds that are around man created! So really there isn't very many "pure bred" dogs out there! Like labs and such! Do you really think that they are just naturaly found? No we mixed up a couple of dog breeds to get them! So yah I would say that Mutts are awsome!

I have had mutts all my life and they make wonderful pets. We had a cocker-poo, who was very smart. we also had a mixed breed who was poodle and llasa apso. smart dog as well.I would easily encourage someone to get a mixed breed dog. Any of the mixed breeds we have had have make the best of pets.

 | petanarchist (8) 08/20/2007 | Having adopted our third dog, I can never see myself getting a purebreed. Sure - it is really tempting at times, most likely after watching the Westminster Dog Show! However, especially since I've been volunteering at our local shelter, I could never do so until stupid humans stop letting their pets breed at will. If there were no more mixes at the shelters - then maybe I'd consider a purebreed. However, like people - I think 'mutts' are so much more exotic & interesting. Plus - I'd beg to find any purebreed cuter than mine or other mixes I've known!
Oh - and don't even get me started on this "designer" breed crap that's so popular now!~

 | lucy2 (7) 01/18/2007 | Mixed breeds are great. They are super smart, super healthy and usually live a very long life. The best part is that they have a home with you instead of the alternative if they are from a shelter. Mixed breed dogs bring a lot of joy to your life; sometimes the way they look is humorous. I only wish my dog could be cloned.

 | puppyloverkb (18) 01/08/2007 | I think that of all the breeds of dogs out there, mix breeds are the best of all. One of the main reasons why I feel this is so, is that fact that somewhere along the line, a purebred dog has been inbreed. In order to achieve a purebred dog, one must breed like traits together, for example, in order to get golden retrievers, they breed like traits together. If in the end they had to breed mothers and sons or sisters and brothers together in order to get the specific trait they wanted, it was worth the risk. When you buy a mix breed, the different types of dogs suppress the negative traits that are found in purebreeds. Plus, I've always found with my "Heinz 57 Variety" dogs that they seem to inherit the best traits of all worlds. There are no negatives that could possibly come from owning a good old fasioin mutt. A good place to find a dog, whether purebred or a mixed breed, is petfinder.com. Stay away from pet stores!!! (Read my review on dogs under pets to know why). You may pay up tp 200-300 dollars for a dog/puppy and it will come spayed/neutured and be up do date on all shots. I found both my "mutts" on this site when they were 6 weeks old and was able to take them home at 8 weeks. This is an amazing site and I encourage everyone to check it out.

 | Jon Andersen (1) 08/21/2006 | The problem with most breeders is that they are not trying to improve the breed, but just to make money. As a result, health and personality problems have become commonplace. and the intelligence of many breeds has suffered. Every time a movie comes out featuring a breed, there is an explosion of some horrible dogs due to reckless breeding. Mixed breed dogs are more likely to be intelligent, healthy, have a great personality, and enjoy good longevity than most purebreds.

 | portecrayon (11) 03/07/2006 | I currently have a 75lbs mix that is part Pit Bull,Border Collie,and Husky.
My wife and I gave the dog consistent training after(Pepper,a Girl)six months I have a well behaved dog that would hurt no human.Pepper was easy to house break because we were consistant and never let up on her training.
I can walk Pepper without a leash and have no problems taking her anywhere.
Pepper has become my Backpacking buddy donning her own pack and going into the wilderness, defending my camp and clearing the trail ahead, enjoying the clean air, splashing around in mountain streams and traveling well in my car.
With all of the love and training we have given Pepper she is wonderful loyal dog who can look me in the eyes and communnicate with me.
By the way if you do mean my family ill will you will get your ass severly chomped on.

 | Drummond (60) 01/12/2006 | Most of my pets have been mutts picked up at the shelter. Actually, some of them show up at our front door. We have an invisible sign that only animals can read that reads "suckers." Our dog showed up, and never left. We have four cats, all strays. Our oldest is "Powell," named after the Powell Street BART station in downtown San Francisco where my wife found him as a kitten. At 11 years old he's living a blessed and comfortable life out here in the wild redwoods of northern California. Even a turtle showed up at our house one day, but we brought him (or her) down to the river.

 | Gromit (2) 01/11/2006 | If you love animals (dogs), it doesn't matter whether you have a mixed breed or a purebred. Fact is, even purebreds were created out of mixed breeds at one time in their past. A dog is a dog, and all dogs are wonderful if raised properly. You love and cherish their companionship no matter what. We got a 'rescue' dog from the Cleveland dog pound (APL), who happens to be a Chocolate Lab/Norwegian Elkhound mix, and she is my best friend! I love her immensely! Her company has helped me with my high blood pressure and with the very lonely move to another part of the country.

 | DogLover22 (0) 01/02/2006 | Mixed breed are very good dogs. I have a "designer dog." I paid top dollar for a Yorkshire Terrier-Poodle mix because I wanted the best of both dogs. I wanted an intelligent dog that was small (but not too small) and did not shed too much. Dog lovers will love a dog regardless of it's pedigree. It has been my experience that people who view pets more in terms of a material possession are more concerned about the breed.

 | ILUVDACHSHUNDS (4) 12/07/2005 | Mixed are so interesting! i love seeing the results of my fave. breeds crossed together.
People are caught up in the war of cross breeds vs pure breeds, when i just say lets like both!
its very cruel when people call cross breeds, curs and mutts and stuff like that, pay some respect to them! there just the same as any other dog, hearing ability and all the senses dogs have.
its hard to describe personalatys of this breed, 'cause theres no certain breed of this dog.
i love cross breeds!

 | trebon1038 (65) 10/23/2005 | I have two to go with my Aussies but it is misleading to say mixed breeds are healthier than purebreds. Most mixed breeds are the result of purebreds that do not come from the best stock. There are also less opportunities to compete with them. My first obedience dog however is a wonderful mix and I titled him with ASCA (Australian Shepherd Club of America) and also UKC (United Kennel Club) allows mixed breeds to compete in performance events providing they are spayed or neutered.

 | Boxers'n'Danes (1) 08/21/2005 | Both thumbs up for the all american mutt! Much love to all you loyal family dogs without a pedigree. That piece of paper with the breeder's signature is often not worth a dime. Go to your local rescue, talk to the staff, find out what that adorable pup's been up to, not what breed he calls his own, and find your kids' very best friend for the next, oh, 20 years...

 | Pet_lover21 (0) 07/14/2005 | It really depends on what breeds are mixed...so you really don't know what you're going to get with a mixed breed. Currently, we have a sheltie mix (mixed with who knows what else) and she is a terrific dog, but like I stated before it depends on the breeds in it. With pure breds you usually know what to expect and will not have any unwanted aggression or surprises depending on the breed you get.

 | kissthecook (8) 05/21/2005 | Although some of the breeds can be good pets, I will always think muts are the best. I had one named Teddy for years. He was the best dog I have ever known. I still get teary eyed to this day when I talk about him. He was so loyal and friendly. He was my best friend and always slept in my room. He was older when we got him because we took him from an abusive environment. He was as sweet as could be. Sadly, he was hit by a car after he had been in our family for 10 years. We buried him in the back yard with a little tombstone. If anyone is considering getting a pet, I would definately say help a pet in need and get a mixed breed.

 | threedognight (2) 04/12/2005 | Some people think that you don't know what you're getting with a mixed breed, but you don't always with a purebred either. A friend of mine had a Lab from a puppy, sweet dog. One day, he turned around and attacked her. She has huge scars across her face. So pure or mixed, dogs are unpredictable, but mixed breeds are wonderful for the most part.

 | 3dogs2luv (0) 03/12/2005 | All pure breeds came from mixing different breeds to begin with.
I am a huge advocate of adopting from a rescue. I have 3 dogs, 2 are rescue, 1 is a pure. I dont have a favorite, they are all unique like people. They are my heart. The only advice i would like to offer to someone who is considering a rescue adoption, is it's a gamble because you dont know the animal's roots. You should realize that going in. Ive had 2 good experiences and 1 bad. One rescue came home with us and passed shortly after. She was born with a disfunctioning liver. It cost a few hundred, and some tears because she was so quickly loved, but it was worth it. At least she had some good in her life before she passed. She could of never experienced love. We did still adopt after her, and were lucky. This taught me it is a gamble, but, isnt everything?

 | OlLineRebel (1) 02/22/2005 | Let's get this straight: a mutt is NOT a breed, so this is bogus to be on here. As it is, a mutt could be anything, so you have NO idea what you're getting, until you've lived w/him a while. Which may be too late. For those who say purebreds (i.e., actual BREEDS) have inbreeding problems - which many do - consider that your mixed-up mutt can also have purebreds w/all the inbreeding problems in him. Conversely, not all purebreds are problems. I've had lousy mutts. My best dogs have been purebred German Shepherds - including the very best dog I've ever even *heard* of, much less been blessed to have to myself. The latter was my 1st registered dog, from a famous handler using totally different bloodline types, and even in health as well as everything else she could put those hearty mutts to shame. Mutts aren't inherently bad, like any dog, but you don't have a *clue* what you mite get into! And you're not guaranteed to get away from those inbreeding problems! It's more of a gamble, that's all.

 | bibliophile (13) 07/29/2004 | Mixed breed dogs are often smarter, better-tempered and more hassle-free than purebreds. Why are they less hassle? They are less likely to be victims of bad genes that can be seen in purebreds due to inbreeding. If you want an all-around pal of a dog, get a mutt.
