 | sperryc (30) 04/08/2008 | I think these are some of the best dogs around. They do everything you'd want a dog to do: swim, fetch, chase geese, etc. Dealing with shedding is a small price to pay in my book.

 | objectivereview (1) 01/17/2007 | my last comment i was trying to rate beagles..oops. golden retrievers are really good dogs, they are loyal and loving and make great family gogs. i personally would not own one because they are kinda cliche and i don't like the way they look. but if you have kids and a white pickett fence you should definitely get this breed.

 | Jon Andersen (1) 08/21/2006 | This has to be the best breed in the world. Very sweet natured, friendly but not too goofy like labs, loving, intelligent, great with kids - we just love them. This breed is commonly seen as a guide dog or service dog. They do need a lot of human contact - it is cruel to leave a golden in the back yard. This is a dog that should live inside with the humans. Medical check-ups are important; goldens can have hip problems and can develop cancer. They tend to be prone to overweight - no table scraps!
Great dogs - THE BEST!

 | kamylienne (80) 02/24/2006 | It breaks my heart to see such sweet dogs, who are full of personality and fun, seem to be prone to lymphoma. I haven't looked for any evidence to back it up, other than what I've seen at the specialty clinic where I work. So many goldens come in with cancer than my heart drops when one walks in.
Their hearts are as gold as their coats; they tend to be playful, sweet and overall quirky. They're great dogs, and I would recommend them to anyone who can spend a lot of time with them. But I hope that you'll never have to deal with the heartbreak of losing one to cancer.

 | ILUVDACHSHUNDS (4) 12/06/2005 | Golden retriever? the first thing that pops into my head is that big, gorgous, happy face of a true golden. Beautiful dogs. Very gentle and good natured. Quite smart, very eager to please and loyal dogs. Great with children.
The only downside to them is the molting, they molt like crazy! They're also active and energetic, so they need plenty of walks.
Great dogs, i prefer them to labs.

 | trebon1038 (65) 10/23/2005 | Nice even tempered dogs for families and very trainable. They can get large and have a lot of hair though. My main reason for not owning this breed is that they have a very high tendency to hypothyroidsm and cancer.

 | OlLineRebel (1) 02/09/2005 | Overrated I think. Nice dogs, and usually quite smart, but not very useful. Purely pets. Don't see them being very concerned about strangers; guarding is the least work you could ask any dog to do to be useful. If I want just a pet-pet who has no real use, I get a cat, for petting and hugging and sitting around doing nothing (this is NOT a knock on cats). Dogs should be useful for all the trouble they are. Goldens particularly (as well as Labs) are mostly just too goofy to me. I like a happy cheerful dog who nonetheless isn't a goon, as almost invariably Goldens (moreso than Labs) seem to be.

 | Destiny98 (1) 09/05/2004 | Another wonderful breed! We lost our golden in May of 2003 and miss him so much. He was in our lives for a short 9 years but they were the greatest 9 years. When I say he was perfect I mean it. He didn't have a mean bone in his body, you could let him roam the yard with you and he would come running to you when you called him back. The list goes on and on. He was a true best friend.

 | AndrewScott (73) 07/08/2003 | Beautiful dogs, good-natured eyes, obedient and good with kids. Since bigger dogs require plenty of exercise and like running around, I recommend a fenced backyard unless you have the time and energy to take them for walks or jogs. Not ideal for small apartments. Shedding can also be a concern.

 | deie3 (0) 07/07/2003 | I love my golden. I trained her for agility, obediance, and rescue. I would have to say that goldens are extremely smart, therefore stubborn and fairly hard to train. They are very active, beautiful, loving, and everything great. People love to see them and they always look friendly so I believe they are great for rescue as the person being rescued would not be intimidated. But people should learn about all dogs before purchasing them. They require a lot of care. They need to be brushed a lot. They are big dogs and need space and room to run and shouldn't really be tied up a lot much like all large dogs. And they are common for hip displacia, so maybe be prepared for high med bills or early death... 7-9 years apposed to an old 13-14 years which would be an old, deaf and blind dog. They are very protective. Ideal for families. But I would recommend males over females as ANY female dog can be quite territorial.

 | BigDogDad (0) 11/06/2002 | Goldens are wonderful dogs. They are very even tempered, great with kids, very loyal and loving. My male golden was an only dog for two years before we got a german shepard pup. There has been no rivalry/jealousy between them since. The golden practically adopted the pup as his own and began nurturing him immediately. They are both wonderful dogs, but the golden is by far the more loving/affectionate. We have two signs for our dogs "Beware of dog" for the shepard and "Be AWARE of dog" for the golden.

 | Rusty (0) 10/25/2001 | These are one of the most gentle breeds known to man. Excellent companions with children. Perfect for that Christmas picture you want to send to your cousins in Encino or something like that. But as a watchdog? Forget it. You could have a burglar in the house making off with expensive silverware and this breed would just lollygag on the floor with its tongue dripping drool.

 | ElegantFire (0) 08/21/2001 | Golden Retrievers have all of the great personality traits of labs (sweet, gentle, easily trained, well behaved), and are truly beautiful dogs. However, they are a pain to groom and leave long hairs all over your house. You could probably spend hours brushing their hair. They can look really messy if you don't take care of them.

 | jacobmurph (0) 08/14/2001 | We have two goldens. They're the friendliest, gentlest, most eager to please dogs I've ever met. They also have quite distinctive personalities. The hair is frustrating, but the love and companionship make it worthwhile.

 | Moviefan (0) 04/25/2001 | I just love them. They're beautiful and gentle dogs. And they've got those great faces. But you've got to have abig house and a lot of time to groom them, and they're being dangerously overbred.

 | SamIAm (5) 10/28/2000 | The best family dog. Our Golden Retriever is active and playful yet gentle with our kids (active 3 and 4 year old boys). She is friendly and eager to please. She is still young (just a year old) so she gets pretty excited when we have company, we have to break her from jumping and sometimes going so far as to piddle on the floor. I think she will outgrow this, with our help. I can't imagine a better dog. I am also surprised that she is also a bit of a watchdog, she barks whenever anyone knocks on the door or pulls into the driveway, and stops as soon as I come to the door. I guess Golden's have become the norm for soccer moms and are the "suburban yuppie dog"But, for good reason, they are loyal, friendly and happy to go with you anywhere.

 | PoorOldEdgarDerby (4) 09/21/2000 | Certainly a 5 for friendliness but a 3 for personality. Very nice, sweet dogs but just kinda bland in my view. I want a dog that's got spirit and Goldens just seem to hang around. Great around kids though!

 | Munson (8) 04/12/2000 | Growing up, I was afraid of dogs. The first dog that I was around for an extended period of time was a golden retriever and he was the gentlest and best mannered dog I have ever been around. The one problem is that they tend to shed a lot of hair.
(3 voted this helpful, 0 funny and 0 agree) |
 | magellan (174) 04/11/2000 | Yes they are goofy and not extremely bright, but I have never met a Golden Retriever that wasn't sweet, loving, and mellow. If I ever have a family, this breed would be high on my list as a potential pet.

 | Wiggum (17) 04/10/2000 | Has there ever been a mean Golden Retriever? I think the laws of nature have turned Golden Retrievers into the most good-natured, desperate-for-attention, desperate-to-please dog there is. My only problem with them is that I've started to associate them with soccer moms in Lexus SUVs. They're suburban yuppie dogs.
