I've never had a bad experience with a Rottweiler. My mother dog-sitted her brother in law's for a month when I was 8. He was very sweet and well mannered. He didn't do very good with cats though. My brother also owned a Rottie named Thunder, who was very playful and only growled at me once (he was laying in the back of the truck and I spooked him). Great amount of time= great dog!

ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM!My favorite dog breed ever!they are so beautiful and sweet we are keeping a rottweiler shepherd mix and I am so happy about it!

this is a weapon and a guard dog not a house pet. Only very experience and skilled owner should have this breed.
Nictesh 05/20/2009
Very amazing dog.Very friendly and look very good- dangerous that good for a house.
footofgod 04/22/2009
Ok, so maybe I am biased. My kdis have had rotties in the house since the day they were born. I love them for their stable tempermant and strong working drives. If you want one, please avoid buying them from newspapers, fly by night internet breeders and the back yard breeders. Go to some shows and working trials and talk to the real breeders and working handlers.
Astromike 04/20/2009
Known for being guard dogs. I find these dogs to be very intimmidating and scary. I still believe that its not the dog that is vicious but the owner that trains them to be that way. That said I still wouldnt trust them.
sharonlynn 03/04/2009
gorgeous, loyal, good watchdog and guarddog. i have one. she is my baby and my childrens baby as well. not even what people make them out (mean and viscious dogs) i guess them people dont know how to raise a dog at all. my rott is very gentle and loves to play and dig for moles. they get bad rep but they are wrong and that falls on the owner who had the dog in the first place. put a bad rep on the owners. not the dogs. dont change your mind bout rotties just because someone had an encounter and more than likely if you had been attacked the dog sensed something about you and you made a move toward the dog that you shouldnt have made.

I love the Rottweiler breed. My husband was a K-9 officer and owned a German Shepherd. Our Rottweiler is not a one-man dog and is more loyal and dependable. It's not the breed, but each dog individually.

My Kayla who we all call "Baby Girl" is the best ever!! I have a 7 year old Lab, Max and he even loves her. She is such a sweetheart. I have 3 teenage sons, and Kayla is my girl. The older she gets the sweeter she gets. She always wants to be with me and she's protective of "our" room. I read some of the comments about the growling. Anyone who knows about Rotties will know that the growling is normal behavior, they don't bark a lot. They do "talk" and that is the growling. Kayla's my girl and I would have 100 if I could. I just love this girl, she's my best friend!!! Rotties are sweet and gentle, just like Labs. We got the Lab first so that he would be the dominant dog, he is very smart and easy going. Kayla has a mind of her own, but she is super sweet and always ready to play chase. I can't say enough about them. If you are a smart and responsible dog owner, you can never go wrong with a rottie.

I have one! ONE OF THE MOST SMARTEST AMAZING DOGS in the world! I would so own another one! Never had Aggressive problems has been a very good girl! She is a big Ol baby yet she is not as big as a normal rotti she is about 65lbs! Very good around kids! They need special owners they love attention! If I could have them all I would take them all in! Love them!!!!!! They all are not mean!!!!;)

I got a two and a half year old four months ago, and it soon became apparent that he was aggressive. Nipped me twice, growled at me every few hours, constantly banging into me as though I were one of the Cattle. Dragged me down the street, ripping my denims and bruising me quite badly while chasing yet another cat. I persevered, determined to repair some of the obvious damage. It was hard hard work. Every time he stepped out of line I smacked him firmly under the jaw. No, its not cruel, as it has transformed his daily life. Max now weighs ten and a half stone, and does exactly what I tell him. He no longer chases Cats, pulls on the lead, growls at strangers, nor me.He is happy, and so am I.
Sagigurl 10/04/2008
Again one of my favorite breeds. an awesome family pet!!!
Rottiegirl 08/11/2008
These are very intellegent dogs. When they attack or have behavior problems it is because their owner doesn't possess the intellegence required to deal with them. The thrive on training, discipline and structure. If you fail to train and socialize them, you are failing your dog. These dogs are for people who will commit to making them the best dog they can be. Most people can't or won't do that and they shouldn't own a Rottie. Spoiling them is just as bad as abusing them. They need to have a strong leader who will train them to respect people. My boy is so in tune with me, I get a response from a raised eyebrow. He loves to cuddle and plays quite gently with my Maltese.
Anyone who lets any dog run loose is a pathetic dog owner and a pathetic member of society. Those owners indanger other dogs, people and worst of all my right to own such a great breed. Condemning an entire breed b/c of one bad experience is no better than judging an entire race of people based on one person. There is no one breed that's perfect for everyone. I would be terribly unhappy with a hyper, not so bright Labrador, but I respect people's right to own them. I expect others to respect my right to own a Rottie.

probably a bad dog if it grows up in a bad home

Now I'm not saying that all rottweilers are like this because I have seen some pretty friendly looking ones. But I had a relative that owned one, and he was one vicious dog. This would not necessarily be the reason why I wouldn't own one, but just because they're too big of a dog for me.

So sweet! They get a bad rap because they look scary, but they are supposed to be calm, aloof, family working dogs- not viscous attackers. Whereas Pits were bred to PIT fight...it's in their blood to attack to the death. These are nothing like Pits...

I like rotties. they seem like friendly, easy-going dogs. They can be barkers, though, which is a problem.
trebon1038 04/07/2008
Most of the Rotties I know that my dog show friends have...are big loving babies. My problem with the breed (though not so much any more) is that too many of the wrong type of people have gotten their hands on them and given them a bad reputation. They are a large strong breed so you can see how bad owners can make them bad dogs.
Mr.Tuner 04/02/2008
One of the best! Love them! Very smart dogs!

I currently own a 7 year old male Rotty named Harley. He is the second pure blood Rotty I have owned. I also owned a Rottweiler/Doberman mix in the past which was a really great dog. Rottweilers are one of my favorite dog breeds. They are smart, affectionate, loyal, gentle, beautiful, and protective. Unfortunately, they are often owned by bad people who mistreat them and try to make them mean. Due to this fact and the way TV/movies portray the Rottweiler many people dislike this breed. I will probably not own a Rottweiler (or any other dog since a Rotty is pretty much the only dog I would want to own) again after the one I have now. The reason for this is because if you own a Rotty your chances of being sued are very high. I have even heard that some insurance companies will not insure your home and property if you own one of these dogs. Also, I get really tired of everyone that comes to my home to visit acting like my Rotty (who is as gentle as a lamb) is going to attack them. My dog has never bit anyone (he does bark though like most any dog will) and has never given me any reason to think he would bite anyone unless maybe they were hurting him or something. My neighbors also have an attitude about my dog, like he is going to attack them or something even though I keep my dog at home while some of the other neighbors let their dogs, that are just as likely to bite as Harley is, roam the neighborhood (I live in the country). ANY dog will bite someone under the right/wrong circumstances. A kid in my area was bit in the face by a Lab they were sitting on top of and trying to ride on (like maybe the parent should have taught the kid to respect animals a little better) but I never hear anyone around here talking about those evil black Labs. It does get on my nerves but I guess I really can't blame people for this because they have never owned a Rottweiler and just know about the negative things they have heard. A Rottweiler is a big dog and capable of doing some serious damage so I do understand the fear or dislike people have for them. I am writing about this just so anyone who is considering a Rottweiler can think about what I have said. I personally love the Rottweiler breed and understand their personalities. They are wonderful dogs. However, most people do not understand them and only see them as some rabid beast. If you are considering getting a Rottweiler you might want to consider some of the things I have said.

my 14 year old Rottie just passed and she was the best dog ever... so sweet and loving and protective. I will miss her very much!

My lady friend had 3 of them,a mother and her two puppies. They were good protection, and excellent with her baby-but they thought they were lap dogs, and they were WAY too big for that!

I am on this site right now because I was viciously attacked by a rottweiler two days ago and am still recovering. This was a farm dog who belongs to a family that actually owns a dog breeding business and knows haow to train their animals. I simply walked up to the house as the dog approached me as he had done before. NHe didn't appear upset, angry or even bark. He walked up to me as if he was investigating who I was and then acted like he was going to jump up on me, so I put my arm up to keep him off my face and he proceeded to tear into my arm. I managed to get him off as I struggled to stay on my feet. Then, he ripped right into the same area on my arm as I got the door to the house open and finally got away. Needless to say, I spent the evening bleeding and getting stitches in the emergency room. If you are congtemplating getting one of a dog, I URGE YOU to get another breed!!! The owners felt terrible and have never had a problem until he apparently, jumped at a lady who approached their house about a week before I did. I am a 38 year old woman who loves pets, but now I am terrified of large dogs. It is my opinion that if you purchase a rottwelier, no matter how experienced or loving you are, you are irresponsible and you had better think long and hard about how you will feel when you have to out your dog down because it suddenly attacks someone, or even worse!

*Updated for typos* These are absolutely the most gorgeous of the large breed dogs. They are loyal, smart, loving, beautiful, and if trained they are great watch dogs. My friend as two males, and they are the biggest babies I have ever met. They are also watch dogs (and are great at it) , but around people that they know, they are spoiled rotten and lovable. Of all of the large breeds, this is the dog that I would want to own.

Gosh I love these dogs! They are beautiful, smart and protective. They really are mean only if you make them mean. I love them and want one or two when im older
Drummond 01/12/2006
Got bitten by one when I was younger. Still have the scar. I'm sure many of them are nice, but they are one of those breeds that jerks like to buy and abuse.
Gromit 01/11/2006
Rottweilers are incredibly intelligent, loving, and loyal dogs provided you raise them responsibly. My in-laws, whom we visit on a weekly basis, have a 4 year old Rotty that is in love with me (and vice versa)! I've known her from a puppy, and she is very playful and affectionate. There is nothing more humbling and beautiful than a 90 pound muscular potentially lethal canine giving you lots of kisses and both paws! BUT, the minute something 'foreign' comes into the backyard, such as a deer, a cat, and especially a kid cutting through, she goes ballistic, barking, growling, and pawing at the glass sliding door! She is just 'doing her job' is what my in-laws tell me! I absolutely LOVE Rottweilers, and plan on getting one myself one day. Raise the dog properly and with love, and they are just like any other dog.
i love labradors !!! 12/06/2005

Just got a Rottweiler puppy. I picked her out; she came running up to me out of all her brothers and sisters. Since we've gotten her home, she only listens to me, no matter how nice my family is to her, she still only listens to me. It's so cute.

I love this dog and most German dogs. What great heart they have!
irishgit 11/27/2004
Loyal, smart and dependable. Their intelligence and loyalty are sometimes unfortunately manipulated by fools or the unscrupulous to turn them mean. The buggers can eat their own weight about every two days though, or so it seems to me, based on the evidence of mine, so buy some shares in Purina.

I have a rottie. He is GREAT! I never would ahve expected myself to own one, but then agai n I am responsibler and train my animals,,, By the way, you people out their talking about rottweiler were created to fight?... Ummm please educate yourselves before you look even more retarded.

I have to ditto StanUzbeck on this one. Rotties are smart, affectionate and very loyal. I also have a boxer and they are inside dogs with awsome tempermaents. see them at www.boxerx.com look for the brody links

LOVE THEM!!! Growing up my mother was afraid of every dog let alone Rotty's. When I was about 17 I snuck off and bought one. My mother was so upset. After a few hours my mother warmed up to her and fell in love with her. I eventually went into the Air Force and left her with my mother, After I got assigned to my base I went to get her and my mother refused to give her back. She is a massive female (130 lbs.) and she is very protective of my mother. So noone dares enter her house without permission. I have a male puppy now and there is no other dog I would consider owning. I think the people who don't like them seem to have had one or two bad experiences with them. It seems they are saying they are violent guard dogs, when they are sweet, loving, and caring!
