 Dr. King was killed for expanding his nonviolent actions to the defense of all American workers and for attempting to unite the working class in America.

The oligarchy didn't mind so much his efforts at racial integration, but they weren't going to put up with a direct threat to their privileges.

This certainly reinforced the disillusionment in the US from the other high profile assassinations of the 1960s.
