In the early 60s the strip was exotic in a banal sort of way, but one always got the feeling that Smythe was simply acting as a mirror for the lager lout syndrome, rather than commenting on it in any way. It may someday be viewed as a fascinating social document of a simpler era, but now it's simply a lukewarm artifact.

You got to love the Geordies, and much of their rugged way of life comes out in this strip. I really hope that Andy does not disparage the North of England too much, because he is funny.

I made the mistake of getting into this as an impressionable teen. The lifestyle looked very attractive to me--getting drunk at night, staggering home in the pre-dawn hours, sleeping it off on the couch while your wife works. If only real life could be like it is in the comic strips...

I haven't seen this in a while but I do remember it was something I looked forward to.

Doesn't have quite the edge it had back in the day but it still beats the pants off of the other insipid family friendly strips.

Andy is great and so funny.

A classic. If I ever get around to getting a tattoo Andy is going right on my pint-lifting arm. Bloody great strip!

Was this strip ever funny?

Nasty, offensive, unfunny. Astonishing that any paper still runs it.

Funny strip, and I miss it. Not very PC these days.

A true rarity. A strip where the creator has died, and where the new guy is just as good.

A one-joke wonder, and has continued on for YEARS in this fashion. Now that the creator is dead, Andy Capp should be laid to rest as well.

Maybe you have to be British to get this one. Maybe you have to be drunk, or put up with a drunk. But I always thought it had the absolute least variety of any comic, with rigid artwork and outdated nuances.

A total looser and not very much a family man.

Not a very funny cartoon, but I highly recommend Andy Capp's Hot Fries.

There's a great episode of The Simpsons where Homer is reading the paper and you hear him quietly mumble, "Oh Andy Capp, you wife-beating drunk..." Nothing about this comic strip is even mildly amusing.
