At one time this was the most popular strip in the world. As such, it provides a sort of benchmark. If It's worse than Dagwood it's pretty bad, and if it's better, then it just might be halfway decent. Chic Young also created 'Dumb Dora', a much better strip, and more in touch with the spirit of the times. Unfortunately, "the times" in question were the 1920s, and the strip is really a relic which should fold up shop. It's been running on fumes for about 40 years.

Time to retire, Dagwood.

Another classic which has to be understood in its 1930s-1950s context.

The was always good, wholesome family humor.

Never evoked a response from me except, why do people read this and why is it on the front page of the Sunday comics?

Outdated.

I think there's still a place for this kind of gentle, family-oriented, feel-good humor, and Blondie succeeds to an extent. At least it doesn't fail in the way that Family Circus so obviously does. I like Dagwood - he gets under my skin. And he and I share faults.....

Sometimes a smile, but mostly still looks and acts dated. Time to go, Blondie.

Will Dagwood make a huge sandwich? Will he take a nap? Do I care?
NDawg5 03/05/2003
Dated, sexist, repetitive and stupid. Man, it sucks

Another comic that's pretty much out of jokes. The old-school unreal appearance, laugh-track-like shock lines, and sexist-looking Blondie make this a candidate for retirement.

Sure the comic strip is somewhat dated. But I can identify with the Dagwood character whenever I try to play handyman around the house--I'm usually all thumbs myself. And I often prefer to be resting on the couch or eating big sandwiches. Even though Blondie is over 70 years old, there are some aspects of that comic strip that are timeless.

Is it a good comic strip? No, not exactly. Not in the wake of "Calvin and Hobbes" and "The Far Side" or even "Fox Trot," "Zits," or "Doonesbury"; however, I'm not lobbying to have it taken out of syndication. It's comic strip comfort food.

Since L'il Abner is not on the list (why not????), I'd have to rank Blondie as my favorite. It's warm and genuinely funny. And it has some good running gags: the giant sandwiches, the nagging salesmen, his habit of taking baths without locking the door (and forever getting interupted), and his dogs, whose facial expressions are always the same as his. Even though Blondie inadvertently keeps yanking the rug out from under her husband (figuratively speaking), she really adores him. Overall, I think Blondie is the finest.

Get this nonsense out of the newspapers.
Potch1214 09/18/2001
Used to be a favorite, but seems like such dated humor now...

When I read this, I just feel so very wholesome.

This strip manages to inject new elements (Blondies catering) while retaining classic moments (the Dagwood Sandwich) Not as strong as it once was...But we all still love Blondie Bop-a-Dop...(her maiden name!)
flai4749om 05/21/2000
Not a bad comic strip. The characters are likeable. The strip seems to use the same jokes (i.e. Dagwood's nap fetish and immense appetite) over and over.
PoorOldEdgarDe rby 05/08/2000
Ah, who are we kidding this cartoon sucks. But that Blondie now we're talking about something to take a gander at. Hoochy mama!! What's that guys doing sleeping so much when he's got that Yummy Mummy working the room?
Munson 05/08/2000
Why was this named Blondie and not Dagwood?
Wiggum 05/07/2000
How did a screw-up like Dagwood get a blazingly hot wife like Blondie? It's like Darin landing Sam on "Bewitched" - quite a mystery. This comic is ancient, but I still find the (admitedly re-hashed) jokes entertaining every now and then... Probably more out of nostalgia than anything else.
