They waited 200 years for a mulatto to be elected? Good for them, then. I am much more attuned to his political leanings and methods. The harm he is doing is very much "equal opportunity. "

I'm so happy about this. I'm a big Martin Luther King fan and I only see positive outcomes here. Because he is black? Well, I am not to objective here because I do beleive that most black people (I hate to use those words, because they are not black, their skin is dark brown like when we get a tan except that some have very dark skin like some people have very light colored skin) are pretty sensible people with great values and most are very proud of the states for making this decision.

Decent 'white' folks were waitin' right along with 'em.
I don't believe this election was anywhere near as politically important as the reaction of fan and foe alike would indicate, but it's a social milestone of epic proportions.
Hope no wingnut takes him out before he gets a chance to prove me wrong.

The role of the President is significant in the USA. The personality has to be chosen based on the personal experience, performance records, and strategic direction aligned with majority of voters. Race, color of eyes, sex, or height should not have any weight. I understand the festive feelings however, and they are justifiable to the certain degree, but that does not matter on the long run.

Well Hell, American Blacks are still waiting for an American Black president.Obama is half White and many speculate he was born in Kenya, got his citizenship changed to Indonesian when he was a boy.Just waiting to see if he takes the Oath on the Bible or the Koran (Q'uran)

The significance to blacks of Obama's election shouldn't be minimized. All they've ever wanted is to be treated the way everyone else is treated, not treated as some sub-human species. Don't forget that Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated by a racist in 1968, only 40 years ago, and the civil rights struggle was still ongoing then. In that era laws prohibited blacks from using the same bathroom as whites, sitting at the same lunch counter, riding in the front of the bus. KKK lynchings were common, and if charges were brought against white killers, white juries refused to convict, no matter how strong the evidence of their guilt. Strides were made along the way, and black people eventually started to appear in positions of prominence, expecially in academia. Exceptional people like Colin Powell were beginning to advance. Black people were starting to tell their children they could be anything they wanted to be if they worked hard, except they couldn't be President of the U.S. That just changed. Blacks for the first time feel they can be accepted and judged soley on their talents, not on their skin color. That's truly historic and a sea change in race relations. We have as our President the first person of color, not the typical white man. Next up: perhaps a woman. Obama's election simply stands for the proposition that one no longer has to be a white male to be elected President. We've finally grown up some. Isn't it about time?

While I understand how they feel, and it is a HUGE historical event. I still dont think its right to vote for a candidate based on just their skin color alone, which is obviously what many blacks did. Just as if women were to vote for Hillary ONLY because she is a women, not because of her policy.

I don't know that they were really expecting it to happen during the period in which they were slaves and not allowed to vote, so you can knock off about 90 years or so.

McCain had been waiting since hs name was Og and Strom Thurmond chucked a rock off his head after they narrowly escaped a sabre tooth tiger that Og had teased.

96% of blacks voted for Obama
46% said is was only because of race
96% of obese people eat McDonald's
46% said it was only because of fiber
Personally, it's hard to tell which demographic is more full of crap.

I didn't know there were any American blacks over the age of 200? As far as I know Hariet Tubman has passed.
I think it is very positive though that many of those people who took part in the Civil Rights movement and lived through segregation and other major discrimination were able to live to see this moment.

I don't think this is a100% accurate statement. Up until a decade or two ago, it was probably something that was completely unimaginable. I think it's unfair to assume that black voters voted for Obama because he is black, anymore than white voters voted for McCain just because he is white. We can and should assume that they voted for Obama because they felt he was the best man for the job, whether you or I agree or disagree with that assessment. For decades we, as a nation, have asked minorities to become full paticipants of the voting process and when they do, we question their motive.

Waiting for something doesn't enter the realm of 'deserve' for me. Talented people rise. Hey, the Phillies waited over 120 years to lose 10,000 baseball games and practitioners of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity are still waiting for real evidence. . .

Obama is half black and half white. So why does he and others say he's black? He is just as white as he is black. As long as American's hang on to their party lines and/ or skin color we will continue to have issues. Obama is American; isn't that good enough?

It really bothers me that people can't get past the race issue. There's got to be something going on about it constantly. It should never make a difference what color the skin of a person is. If they can govern the country, that's all that should count. Although I am sure that there are many people who voted for Obama because of his skin color, and some who voted against him because of his skin color. Which goes to show you what's really on the minds of some.

What a horrible reason to vote for a man (or not) ~ because he is black! Come on people - it's not a game. I think if OJ was running, it would be the same thing ~ very pathetic.
Victor83 11/05/2008
I do not care for Obama and I am not happy that he won. However, I can understand why the majority of blacks probably are.
