I like the thought of playing Monopoly; however once I begin I quickly remember why I hate this game. I do think it's fun to get Chance and Community Chest and try to get pieces of property. And I most certainly enjoy the variations they have come out with (like the Here and Now, or the King's Island one for our amusement park in Cincy). But once all the properties are bought it's like pulling teeth to get someone to trade or sell their property so you can get monopolies. And the game lasts FOREVER!! I have rarely finished a game. I preferred playing a hand-held electronic version; they haggled with you better. :)

A great game but I don't like plain ones.
twansalem 07/06/2007
One of the best board games ever made. It really has stood the test of time. I know a lot of people complain about it being too long, but that's one of the best parts about Monopoly. My little brother and I used to have games that lasted for a couple weeks, most other board games seem to end just when you're really getting into them. Although the best game we had we never finished. We had the game set up in the spare bedroom, and my mom, being somewhat absent minded, went into the room and opened up all of the windows to help get some air movement in the house, but didn't bother to tell us. A couple hours later a summer storm popped up, and the wind blew the money all over the room. Game over.

I will give this game about a 3.5. I know that Monopoly is one of the most famous games ever. And now you can even buy it in all kinds of versions. {my son has Pokemon Monopoly} There are some good things about Monopoly. It is a great learning game. It helps you learn how to deal with money and how to be a business person. My biggest problem is it can go on forever! I like toplay games but not for hours on end. Maybe it is just because over the years I seem to play with those people who are downright ruthless and forget that this IS just a game.Sorry I know that there are a lot of Monopoly fans, I am not one of them.!
Triped 04/15/2007
This is a great "real-world" business game for kids and adults alike. Although really unethical, this game surprisingly is very good to train young people into the mindset of a real estate tyrant. There's no parental guidance rating on this game because it is fit for the family, but really, if reality were to be taught in this game, then people would start getting hurt with crime, unemployment and all the good stuff society has in store for people who don't "make it."Its also a long game (like most people's lives), and you will become proficient at counting money. It is a very good 1.5 to 2 hour game on a semi-cloudy day.Hopefully when these kids grow up, they don't act like money-hungry animals, who's sole purpose is to acquire more wealth.Hmm?
Klatuu 04/04/2007
Great game, try playing by the rules: No free parking $, limited housing (if the houses are used up, none can be built, 10% penalty to get property out of mortgage) it is a superior game that people often play inferiorly...
decalod85 04/04/2007
Solid 5. Teach your kids to be a ruthless slumlord.
GenghisTheHun 04/03/2007
We used to add rules to liven up the game. Unfortunately, that lengthened it. It still is worth playing and has really held up.
emmmma12 04/03/2007
I've always been a fan of monopoly, however its rare we would actually finish a game. But theres also a shortened version of the game, where you can just divvy out the property randomly, and play from there. I dont know if thats as fun as buying all the property yourself, and its certainly not fair when your board game rival gets Boardwalk AND park place just by chance. Just a suggestion, though.
tom60657 01/26/2007
As a kid, we used to play Monopoly for hours and hours, yet I can count on one hand, how many times we actually finished a game. Monopoly is a classic that helped open the door to some really great board games, but by today's standards, it's extremely outdated and boring. Anyone who gives Monopoly more than 2 stars is obviously ancient themselves and has never played the really great games offered today. Monopoly - The Bored Game!

a classic, i mean where else can you build up a property empire in order to bankrupt your friends and family.
LadyJesusFan77 7 09/01/2006
This is a very fun game, but you better have a lot of free time because it can take forever and a day to play it.
frogger20190 08/29/2006
An American classic. I can play it every night and never get tired of it. Love the "retro edition" in the wooden box. Board game lovers should get it, as well as the retro editions of Scrabble and Stratego.

Love Monopoly but it can be time consuming!
CanadaSucks 07/18/2006
A winner. . .but it can drag on for hours and cannot merit a 5-star rating. . .still a classic. . .
VirileVagabond 07/18/2006
Though obviously an undisputed classic, most likely a common human experience in the developed world, and the biggest selling board game in history (not counting chessboards and the like), I can't recall the last time I played or wanted to play Monopoly. The game is overly long, resulting in rarely finishing a proper game, as some opponent will get bored relatively soon. I remember playing as a kid, but looking back I don't understand why the game is attractive to children playing amongst themselves, other than for trashing the board when losing (another common experience). (Though along with adults the game could teach some real world experiences such as business and dealing with money). As other comments have noted, the original properties are based on Atlantic City (with other versions adapted for other locales). Contrary to popular belief, the game was actually created in 1903 by Elizabeth J. Magie and patented the following year; however, it took Charles Darrow's repackaging (and re-crediting) for Parker Bros. in 1935 to start the unstoppable ball rolling. Another tidbit, I believe I read once the Illinois Avenue is the property landed on the most. With all that said, if I do play, I want to be the car or ship. (The thimble has to be the worst.)
IanTheCool 05/07/2006
The classic of clasic board games, strategic in a way and always fun, great to play any time.
Penwah 04/01/2006
Finally, a place to publicly proclaim that I HATE this game. It is boring, monotonous, never ending. And I lived in Atlantic City.
daedalus 01/03/2006
Highly overrated game. It goes on and on for hours with little going except the exchange of fake money. The strategy is always the same too, buy up as much property early on as you can or your dead later on. If there is a more complex version it would be better. Basically, if there was some way to open businesses and market a product instead of simply owning property and charging rent the game would be much better.
Drummond 01/03/2006
An excellent well-crafted game. Anybody who plays Trivial Pursuits knows it's based on Atlantic City. The only problem is that it's not a game to play when you've only got an hour or so. Hint: I've never lost once I've gotten hotels up on an orange monopoly, the one on the second rank near free parking. Seems to be landed on more than any other monopoly.
Trunkslvr120 01/03/2006
interesting in the beginning, but after a while gets monotonous. don't think I ever played until someone wins. Usually play until we get bored.
girlsrockallur sox 11/01/2005
it rocks
dermeister 08/31/2005
Love Monopoly. My family always puts all the money you have to pay from Community chest & Chance cards into the middle of the board, and whoever lands on free parking gets it all. Also, here's a good Monopoly quiz: http://www.plentysmart.com/games/monopoly/monopoly. php
Mr.Political 07/02/2005
Classic fun that keeps you interested no matter how long a game lasts. I will admit that I can get a little carried away when playing, especially if I can start putting hotels on my property. Only down side is putting all the stuff away (a task left to the loser in my household) in it's proper order.
kattwoman 04/05/2005
pure classic. every home should have one if you like playing board games. no collection is complete without one. plus there are so many variations you should be able to find one that fits your style if you are bo red with classic version
texasyankee 03/29/2005
Can't get tired of this game.
keithbernardco ok 03/25/2005
dull
AndrewScott 01/31/2005
Monopoly or monotony? The game is absolutely classic, but the lengthiness of many games make it less than ideal for get-togethers with family and friends.
OrangeCharlie 01/28/2005
Good but it can become too lengthy. There is the shorter way to play but it just isn't as fun.
bikerguy 01/28/2005
I love monopoly, my dad's a banker and he whoops everyones keister!!
Seraph 01/25/2005
A really fun game. The downside is it is LONG; a typical game can last upwards of three hours. My Monopoly strategy was always to slowly construct a death row of hotels across five or six spaces. My family would feebly try and fail to roll their way past it and BAM! That'll be $50,000!
blink 01/25/2005
you can't be serious. Try something like Catan or Ticket to Ride. Then a really good boardgame like Euphrat & Tigris.
zuchinibut 11/12/2004
Monopoly is a great game to play, but it really does take a long time to play, and rarely ever finishes properly. I do however enjoy playing it on the computer at games.com, because the structure that the computer provides allows the game to proceed quickly.
VisionDude8 11/12/2004
Definitely a classic, but games often last long and get tedious after the first few hours of play.
SpisterMooner 10/06/2004
A great concept, but too much luck involved when all is said and done. Ultimately, for my wife and I, besides the luck factor, it comes down to who can make the best deals against the other person. A good game for real tycoons who get a kick out of taking advantage of and beating the living snot out of a weakened opponent.
Randyman 09/17/2004
This is the undisputed King of board games. My wife and I have had many a good fights playing this game over the years. Sometime this game can last into the wee hours. When you're losing you really feel like quiting, but as soon as things start to go your way, you get a surge of energy. There is nothing like winning Monopoly and rubbing it their faces, c'mon you know we all do it.
OneHungryMonst er 08/30/2004
It's a very fun, complex game. Although it does get boring when it takes too long.
Jesus_Freak 08/21/2004
it is good but a very long game.
typhoon220 08/20/2004
This a good game but it can get really boring if it takes to long. Not a game to play if you have to be somewhere soon.
louiethe20th 05/29/2004
An ingenius creation. The one who created this had extraordinary vision, even though it is based on simple real estate. Timeless, classic, two thumbs way up!
Yorthan 04/13/2004
A classic, though I wish they'd stop watering it down by cranking out a gazillion variations on the theme. I mean, c'mon, do we REALLY need Garfield Monopoly? I think not.
minkey 03/19/2004
A good game that encourages greed. My strategy was to buy every single peice of property I landed on, even if I had to mortage everything to afford it. This game generally lasts so long that the properties you acquire prove way more valuable than the few hundred you have to spend on them. In addition, you never know when the random property you have will become useful in a trade.
tvtator 03/02/2004
This is a game that can last a long time and if you and your friends or family are really into it can become quite obsessive, especially if you are into owning all the properties of a certain group. Fun, competitive, good for some math skill and some decision making skills.
oldiesmusicfan 101 02/06/2004
Really fun game, I play it a lot as a kid.
snlgirl 01/22/2004
A great abd classic game! The only bad part about this game is that it takes a really long time to play.
JonTheMan 01/04/2004
I have the original set, the Star Wars set and the deluxe set such is my love for this game. There is nothing quite as satisfying as raking in the reams of cash from a vanquished would-be property tycoon. Funnily enough, considering how left wing I am, in seven years, I have never lost at this game
