Recently saw the entire first season on DVD and it was clear that Chevy Chase carried the show on his back. He wrote (winning an Emmy for his work), did every cold opening, created the news spot, appeared in the majority of the sketches, and basically put SNL on the map as political satirists with his mockery of then Pres Ford.
Not given the credit he deserves for that first year.

Callitdowntheline75, do you hate him because he wasn't funny or because he expressed his views on hating Bush?
Bubblehead0774 7 06/02/2005
Hi I'm Chevy Chase. I used to have a career before i turned into a bitter, miserable psyco. Now I'll wash your car or cut your grass for food.
candy kane 05/23/2005
Thank god they got rid of him after one year. Not funny.
ralph vincent 04/10/2005
i agree. the rest of his career is rotten, but his snl days are legendary. snl hall of famer.
finzleft 04/01/2005
The greatest comic to ever walk the SNL stage. Anyone who doesn't understand that obviously wasn't around for season one!
callitdownthel ine75 02/24/2005
Egotistical and self-absorbed, Chevy Chase is looking for any opportunity to revive- or even extend his dying career. Like the other imbeciles in Hollywood, this jerk decides deriding George W. Bush is the way to go. Well, no one is forcing him to like Bush (and he has plenty company with those in Hollywood whom hate the President). But this fool ought to know many of his now-former fans either support the President or at least support the brave men of our military who are sacrificing their lives for all Americans. If Chevy Chase had an iota of a brain (which he doesn't), he ought to use his energies positively and give his support to the soldiers whom defend the very freedom he pisses on (despite his hatred for Bush). But like other pampered Hollywood morons who have no decency or have no respect for others' opinions other than their own, it probably is too much to ask.

I didn't think he was that funny on SNL. But if he was playing the right character, like Nixon's son-in-law, he was dead on. The Ford stuff and falling down was NOT funny. His Land Shark was----in other words, very limited in range, but when he got something right, it was hilarious. Same goes for his movies--see Fletch (the original) and the first Vacation for proof.
owl1962 08/25/2004
Can't do characters, smug and egotistical.
ernesta 07/10/2004
Snotty comments from Clark Griswald. Gee, the President must be humiliated.
marcm9999 07/10/2004
I honestly do not think he is funny. Now after hearing his Bush bashing, I know he is a moron extraordinaire. What a dip stick.
phlip-tout 07/10/2004
You either got it or you don't. He used to have it. Notny moah.
sooyiban 07/09/2004
A pitiful, bald has-been.

Hilarious.

PRATFALLS! MORE PRATFALLS! GIVE ME THE PRATFALLS! (Just Kidding!) Chevy Chase is a mediocre actor and he has a poor choice in movies. Turned down the lead role in American Beauty and instead chooses to do cheezy National Lampoon sequels. I really think Chevy should realize that he can only be a supporting actor and cannot lead a movie. And to read scripts a bit more carefully..
chickenpie 04/08/2003
I just have to see his name in the credits to know I don't need to waste $10 on the movie. Just sucks.
Casey McFarland 02/27/2003
yeah i know he's chevy chase but there's something about him that just gets on my nerves, i dislike him, and i don't find anything he does amusing.
bosguy 01/29/2003
One word....SUCKED!!! Every time he fell, I wished it were for real.
skipbar 01/20/2003
Never got him. Oops you fell, not funny.
Jason1972 01/16/2003
Those pratfalls got pretty repetitive.
Tryanythingonc e 11/11/2002
On his SNL stuff, the guy was great and dryly funny. He also did a few good films up to the mid-1980's. In the late 1960's, he played drums in a group with pre-Steely Dan members Walter Becker and Donald Fagen.
Potch1214 10/12/2001
I know he was an original cast member, but Chevy Chase was a one joke comic. Thos prat falls were funny the first 10 times maybe, but enough was enough. He is still paying for doing them today with back problems. Does portray a good self-obsessed jerk, but I gather it's not much of a stretch for him.
rolodo 07/01/2001
was fine on snl but has since has become creepy and devastatingly unfunny.
callmetootie 04/07/2001
Chevy Chase deserves a better rating on this site, because he was like the original member of the series, and he deserves to be in the top 10. He had some great characters, and even though he left a bit before the rest of the 70's cast, he was the most memorable.
Channeeh 12/13/2000
Funny guy. He's funny at times but can get quite slapstick, but he's exceptional and it makes him funnier as well. He was extremely funny in National Lampoon's.
whitesatin 11/22/2000
Chevy Chase is not as known as much for his physical comedy as he is for his casual approach to humor. When he first started out, he became known for the comic timing of his trips, falls, and slips. It seems he showed his better, more passive comedy style with the National Lampoon's movies he starred in. He is also attributed with Jane Curtin, his early SNL costar who shared his bumbling, light-hearted comedy style. The only thing to watch out for is that his jokes and whims might be a little too sophisticated for younger viewers, but, as a whole, he has become a truly sensational component of the ever-presitigious entertainment industry.
georgew 11/22/2000
Great dry straight man humor.
newt7741om 06/23/2000
TOTALLY overrated!
flai6201om 05/25/2000
SHOULD HAVE STAYED ON THE SHOW.HIS CARRER HAS BEEN DOWNHILL SINCE '76
Ruby 02/18/2000
Chevy was over-rated then and is over-rated today. Very surprising that he was the first SNL "star" when Belushi was far and away the funniest...
Wiggum 02/16/2000
Hilarious on SNL as the news anchor, falling down stairs, or as President Ford (probably falling down stairs then, too). And his early post-SNL movies were great, too (Seems Like Old Times, Foul Play, Caddyshack, Fletch). But what the hell happened to him? Did anyone see that talk show fiasco a while back?
upchuck 02/15/2000
chevy was overrated, okay on snl, but except for the vacation movies, i haven't been very impressed.
jkri642om 02/14/2000
He left the show too early! Best SNL News Anchor ever.
