Though this is not what most would expect from Clint Eastwood as an actor, the direction was above average and it is a rare film in that it did justice to the novel. What happens when true freedom meets true love? Call it a "chick flick" if you will- this one is worth seeing for Meryl Streep's acting alone.

This one will grow legs, given the chance. A very persuasive and underappreciated performance from Eastwood, close to what someone such as Gary Cooper in the role under a dedicated director might have accomplished, which happened to be the case here.

I was bound and determined not to like this flick. Martha tried to make me go to it when it first came out but I got out of it somehow. I knew it couldn't be any good with all the chick flick reviewers and flacks out there pushing it.
When I actually buckled down and saw it on dvd, I was surprised that is was not as bad as I feared and much better than I hoped. What's her name doing another role as a woman with the heavy accent is a little old, but all and all I found it an enjoyable watch.

Shmaltzy. . .a glorious chick-flick with a brain. For this list, it's a tough 3 for me. It's well-directed, shot, and acted. I was interested in these characters- but I wasn't 'wow'-ed like other critics were. A solid addition to Eastwood's canon.
