Must rate as the best of the second group on SNL. Very funny during that era. Most of his later film work was pretty sad though. He should go back to doing his stand-up routines and get back in touch with reality.

I'll give him a 4 because he used to be funny and he paved the way for funnIER people to continue on carrying SNL.
badgerfan 02/27/2008
Five star all the way. You can't forget about Mr. Robinson or when he wants to see what being white is like. I also want to know who came up with him being Gumby.
CanadaSucks 02/12/2007
Still worth watching the old SNL tapes. . ."Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood" was awesome. ..
Derek880 02/12/2007
There has been no one better since. He was the one reason the show survived during that time. Put his best sketches against any by Martin, Radner, Hartmann, etc,, and he wins hands down. The best natural performer ever on SNL.

Left SNL with a gap no one could fill.

Highly overrated.

YEEEOOOWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!! Too hot in the hot tub!
snl_luvah 01/07/2004
Carried SNL through it's weakest period and deserves 4 stars for that alone. Genuinely funny as well - what a shame he still refuses to go back.
ggobs 08/16/2003
liked hmm better before he became family oriented.

Velvet Jones, Kill My Landlord (his debut), his Jamaican reggae star ("kill all the white people...but buy my record 1st"), Mr. Rogers, James Brown celeb hot tub, Little Richard Simmons, BuckWheat, Gumby, Stevie Wonder, the angry Black Panther ("so I messed up - SHUT UP!") - he took Pryor to the next level. Anytime you see a black comic on TV, you're seeing a reheated, blander Murphy. In Living Color was influenced by him, as was Def Comedy Jam, Comic View, etc.. The most amazing run of success I've ever seen in comedy. I want to penalize him for not being a TRUE stand-up comic and for all the crap that came after, but I can't bring myself to do it!
FredTaylor#28 06/21/2003
When it comes to comedians, everyone has a favorite. For me, it was Eddie Murphy. From his "Delirious" to "Raw" and all his movies. This guy, just when he is himself, is the funniest guy alive. He made me laugh like no one else since.

For pure comedy, Murphy on SNL was a genius. His "best of" video is one of the funniest things I have ever seen in my life. The show wouldn't have made it through the 80s if he hadn't come along and saved it. When he was on, he WAS the show.
NDawg5 03/05/2003
Simply the greatest
ANGELA ALLEN 03/03/2003
I LOVED EDDIE MURPHY BACK IN THE DAY ON SNL BUT, NOW HE NEED TO GET SOME NEW MATERIAL.
ChuckB28 11/27/2002
Kill the white people We're gonna make them hurt Kill the white people But buy my record first
Jason1972 11/04/2002
No one should forget that this was his crutch to superstardom throughout the 80s. Plus, his comedy was sheer genius. Mister Robinson, BuhWheet, and James Brown getting into the hot tub were superb skits. He came along just in time to prove that SNL could continue without the originals as they had moved on at the time.
benfergy 04/16/2002
Simply hilarous. His all time best was "Buh-Weet Sings".
ThePatriotfan 11/29/2001
Whenever I see Buckweat (lol), I still just totally crack up. What makes me laugh the hardest is "Unce, tice, fee times a mady", OMG thats just too funny!!! :) As funny men go, he is one of the greatest!!
Potch1214 10/12/2001
I would put Murphy as my #4 of NRFPTP. He was absolutely brilliant on SNL. Another fearless comic. Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood and Gumby and Buckwheat were classics!
afterglow70 06/19/2001
Eddie really was the one of the kings of SNL. I loved everything that he did, so I bought the Eddie Murphy video library of SNL for only..... $19.95!! LOL!! He is hilarious!
callmetootie 04/07/2001
Eddie Murphy was the best actor on SNL from 1980-1982. His characters were so damn funny, and so was he. I loved him as Richard Simmonds, Stevie Wonder, Mr. Rogers, and remember Buckwheat? Oh-Tay!
Lyrical 03/28/2001
HELL! Eddie Murphy made SNL. There was Mr. Rogers - Hello Churgen!; Lionel Richie -Unce, tice, tree times a mady; and who could forget, my favorite, Tyrone - KILL MY LANLORD, KILL MY LANLORD!
ccaliente 12/15/2000
Eddie Murphy is THE man on SNL with his impressions of Gumby. Stevie Wonder and Bill Cosby, watching his old shows bring on hysterical bursts of laughter. I'd say he is definitely the most controversial of the SNL alumni, and also the funniest.
steadyups 12/12/2000
Eddie Murphy is probably one of the funniest people in the world of entertainment. His work for SNL probably sparked his movie career. His best skits star him as Buckwheat of the Little Rascals. I also grew up at his movies, ie 48 Hours, Golden Child, Beverly Hills Cop. He's definitely a 5+.
Paste 12/12/2000
He is by far one of the funniest men ever. I loved his skit of James Brown in the hot tub. He is a comedic genius and a great actor. I also think he is a good action film actor, but his strong suit is comedy.
judo 12/12/2000
As funny as this man is now, one has to remember the greatness that started his career. As an old cast member on SNL, I remember his imitation of white people when no black people were around- too funny!
solerob 12/11/2000
The best comedian of all time, he had played many different types of characters in his movies, most successful actor of all time, he's a legend in all types of comedy. His movies have grossed the most for one actor ever.
mpinay 12/11/2000
Eddie Murphy is really funny like Chris Rock. I like all of his movies, like the Nutty Professor, and I think it's worth paying $8 to watch him. He's a good comedian and attracts a lot of people.
megatron 12/10/2000
Probably the greatest SNL performer. He put SNL on the map. He played the funniest roles. Even when his role wasn't very big, he still stole the show.
Noiiall 11/24/2000
The funniest of all time. His hardcore edge was evident even in his early SNL days. From his funny takes on racial issues, to his famous James Brown sketch, his comedy was always on the edge. Whatever came out of his mouth was something to stir everyone up. Bold, beautiful Eddie.
bigdaddy116 11/17/2000
He was OK on SNL. He was doing what was asked, but he was funny when he started going solo. When he did Raw it was his best work. After that, he made some movies that were not successful, and his TV show was not good.

SamIAm 02/17/2000
Buckwheat and Mr. Robinson were legendary characters..and who can forget that laugh.
Wiggum 02/16/2000
He single-handedly revived a dying show. Any skit with Murphy in it turned out to be at least pretty funny. His spoof of "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" was great, that Buckwheat thing was classic, and his Stevie Wonder/Frank Sinatra skits with Joe Piscopo ("You are black and I am white / You are blind as a bat and I have sight") were hilarious.
upchuck 02/15/2000
eddie murphy was great on saturday night live...loved his buckwheat and gumby "damn it", but i have not been a big fan of his movies.
Shafty 02/15/2000
Classic SNL - Buckwheat, Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood. Comic genius back in the day and he carried that show through what could have been a lull for them.
Munson 02/15/2000
Eddie was a riot. Buckwheat, Mr. Robinson.
jkri642om 02/14/2000
Genius.
