Blah...I know a lot of people hate Packer, but I personally watch for the action and don't pay too much attention to what is said.

I guess I have heard him as background noise when I have the game on but am not listening to it too closely. O.k.
trebon1038 03/12/2008
Don't really know him....is that bad?????
aclimacus 03/24/2007
He ruins basketball games for me with his arrogance and ass-kissing of marquee schools, not to mention his contintual second guessing of coaches during a game, as if he's ever won anything. I do not know one basketball fan who enjoys his commentary; on the contrary, every hoops fan I know hates him.
sethpeterson 03/06/2007
Very negative, incredibly biased against "mid-major" teams (and especially for the ACC), and often makes stupid and/or incorrect comments during a game. Also, he's unbelievably stubborn. If video replay evidence proves him wrong, he still won't admit that he made an incorrect statement!
CanadaSucks 03/05/2007
Kisses the ass of every coach. . .doesn't call a balanced game. . .overrated. . .

exhibit Y: Henderson elbow to hansbrough's face: henderson ejected Packer: "That was NOT INTENTIONAL"...repeated a half dozen times SHUT YOUR MOUTH You made your decision after one replay. Truth is you have NO IDEA what his intention were, so SHUT YOUR MOUTH with your damned OPINION and just call the damn game.
Mortimer 02/18/2007
He thinks he knows it all, but he doesn't. You can always tell who is pulling for. He is very very annoying.

ACC Homer.

My husband and I are big college basketball fans. We look forward to the tournament every year. The only thing that spoils it for us is having to listen to Billy Packer. He is beyond arrogant. I have a friend who was in a well-know restaurant with her husband at the same time that Billy Packer was there. Packer got into a shouting match with his waitress and screamed at her - loud enough for most of the restaurant to hear - "Do you know who I am?" I can remember when Al Maguire and Packer used to do games together and how Maguire would get under Packer's skin. It used to delight us. Packer needs to go. He adds nothing positive to the games he broadcasts. There are so many positives and negatives about sports in this country. Lets concentrate on the positives and get rid of the negatives. Packer is one of the BIG negatives. jbw

just listened to Packer do Iowa/Mich State- Iowa's Adam Haluska- one on the fastest High School sprinters in the country 4 years ago and is white broke away from a black MSU guard for a layup- reason? MSU tired after three games in three days or otherwise on any normal day Halsuka would not be faster- true lack of knowledge of the players and also somewhat biggoted

Billy Packer has more basketball knowledge than almost anyone you'll ever meet... and he let's EVERYONE know it. Let someone else do the Final Four. I'm sick of Nantz and Packer.
va_libertarian 08/05/2005
This guy should NEVER be allowed to broadcast an ACC game. Especially when the other team is from another conference.
rodgerwe 04/03/2005
Billy Packer and Joe Nance spent too much time talking about other games and subjects during the Miss. State/Duke regional NCAA game. Sports announcers should concentrate on the game at hand and report in a non-biased way and not over-emote.
Alexg681 01/01/2005
I can't stand this assface. He does know a lot but I can't stand it when he calls games. HE DOESN'T LET THE GAME BREATHE! It's amazing, when Nantz isn't talking, Packer doesn't shut up. He won't let the game breathe for a second. He always has something to say, and since he talks so much it gets to the point where he rambles on about the most meaningless things that nobody gives a crap about.
vipersrt10 12/23/2004
Insufferable know-it-all. He makes good points, but the tone of his voice and absolute lack of simple people skills makes him unbearable. Although Vitale is overbearing in his own way, he at least comes off like someone who can tolerate other people and their opinions, whereas Packer has absolute disdain for others.

a-hole
Roach 04/06/2004
I am one of those fans who actually enjoys Packer's call he brings lots of history and isn't as annoying as Vitale in his calls doesn't have those catch phases, but is solid 30 final fours and counting keep up the good work.

Fudge Packer is a grouchy bitter blowhard. I enjoyed CBS's crappy coverage slightly better with the sound off! Can't they put on someone who actually ENJOYS basketball? His constant negativity is grating. If he's so much a hoops braniac, why isn't he coaching? Answer: NO ONE LIKES AN ARROGANT BLOWHARD. Raftery is TONS better, if we have to be stuck with CBS's lineup (despite his periodic constipated grunts -- ...goes in for the dunk -- WITH AUTHORITY!!). Fudge Packer puts the ANAL in analyst and only crap and farts spew from his gaping hole.
rederd 03/30/2004
He is stupid and annoying. Why CBS doesn't fire him, I don't know. I can't stand listening to one of his broadcasts.
higgy1 03/16/2004
Gave him a 1 (no 0 available). Lives in an unreal and totally biased world. Makes Vitale bearable, by comparison.
just_another_g uy 02/10/2004
Painfully ignorant and arrogant. I'm just glad that my remote has a mute button. Silense is golden compared to him....
melott 01/26/2004
It's hard to know who the analyst is and who is doing play by play when he works with Nantz. People say Vitale talks a lot. I bet you Packer says more than Nantz. Plus, how mad does he get every year when Women's figure skating beats college hoops in TV ratings. Sorry Billy, not everybody loves hoops like you.
cjs13 05/11/2003
very biased adn not as smart as he thinks he is, how could he ever think he is better than coach al!!
BassHawg 03/28/2003
You shouldn't be an analyst if you are a homer like Packer.
angusmacpherso n 03/23/2003
Hey Billy, there IS great college basketball outside the ACC...
Fredwah 12/12/2002
Now that Dean Smith (excuse my Billy, the Legendary Dean Smith) has retired, I can tolerate Packer. Actually, he very knowledgeable and a good announcer. He used to drive me nuts when he called a game involving Smith. But now, he's good at what he does.
upchuck 04/05/2000
Very irritating...very biased and not as knowledgable as he likes to think he is. Yes Cleaves showed his heart in the championship game, but it wasn't worthy of a "purple heart" or something as Packer would have one believe. He tends to always praise the team that is leading, and that can change,
magellan 04/04/2000
I don't think I am ready to say that this guy doesn't know anything about basketball. However, mixed in with his on the money (albeit bitter) analysis, he throws out some comments which are shockingly ignorant. For example, in last night's championship game, he berated Florida's point guard for not boxing out his man when Charlie Bell grabbed a DEFENSIVE rebound. Uhhh, hello? There are so many things wrong with this statement I don't even know where to start. First of all, a point guard's first responsibility on offense when a shot goes up is to get back, in order to prevent an opposing team's fast break. Second of all, the job of a good offensive rebounder is not to box out, but to find lanes in the defense through which to slash to the basket around the defender's box out. Anyway, Packer's lapses combined with his general unpleasantness give him a 2 in my book.
Munson 04/04/2000
Besides the fact that he is a pompous jerk, he is incredibly overrated as a game analyst. During last night's championship game, it seemed like, at times, he didn't have a clue what he was talking about.
