Joe Morgan brings very little during his analysis of the game that the viewer didn't already see. Great ballplayer but as an analyst, he needs to tell us something we don't know.

A sour tempered, self-important boor in the press box. But as a player, it was like he invented second base.
Twitchin' Monkey 07/23/2007
never saw him play the field, but apparently he must have been simply amazing. i mean, if the way he talks in the booth is warranted, he may have been the best that ever played. i can't stand to listen to him. his comments are ALWAYS biased, and he will flat out tell john miller that he is wrong. I've never heard him commentate without the words "well when i was a major leaguer, i did this better than that guy..." bottom line, he's pompous and arrogant and has no personality. great knowledge of the game, hall of fame second baseman, simply dreadful announcer.
doobiesNhof 03/26/2006
Was an excellent 2nd baseman and is very knowlegeable but can grate on your nerves after a while with his biased comments.
gobolts 12/27/2005
Morgan is the biggest know-it-all, self-righteous announcer in the game. How in the world can Jon Miller sit through a game with this opinionated bore? I feel like Morgan has really stepped out of line in the booth, practically calling the Astros a rascist organization. He also speaks as if HE IS the MLB, and that he knows what is best for the game. It wouldn't be so bad to state an opinion occasionally I guess, but Morgan does so far too often and with such conviction and finality that he really is very annoying. Well Joe, buddy, you're not the only one who knows anything about the game. And much of what you spout CAN be disagreed with.

As a player he was incredible. Unfortunately, as an analyst he is an absolutely self-righteous, incredibly humorless, curmudgeon , though his knowledge of the game is praiseworthy.
jimmydradio 05/17/2005
I wish Joe and Jon Miller would focus more on the game instead of doing promos for ESPN or tossing it to Sam Ryan and another worthless interview. I know he doesn't have control of that because somehow the braniacs at ESPN think people like that stuff. Just get back to the game. He does the best he can with what he has to work with.
mtbmlb 03/03/2005
A great ballplayer and an even better color commentator for Sunday Night Baseball.
crash_davis 01/08/2005
A great analyst, but seems to be threatened anytime it seems someone might have actually been better than he was on the baseball field. I respect what he did for the Reds, to be sure; but, Joe, please, you are NOT the greatest 2nd baseman ever and there are contemporaries (Ryne Sandberg comes to mind) that were actually pretty good themselves and may have been better than you. Come down off your high horse, especially when it comes to the Hall of Fame. Sheesh!!!

I think he's great and I was glad he respectfully referred to the Cardinals fans as the best in baseball. I agree with many that his focus on Barry Bonds, (who nobody in baseball really likes) hurts some of his image. But overall I think he knows a lot about the game and he has been in a lot of big time situations.

good points-knows the game extremely well and was a great player...bad points humorless nature, too much back in my day things were better commentary and , in general, a holier than thou attitude.. better than the fox team of mccarver/ buck by a mile though....

I am amazed that anyone could be critical of the great Joe Morgan, who is a true gentleman and a scholar of the game. We are, sadly, facing another world series to be announced by the idiot team of Buck and McCarver, whose effeminate, moronic, pseudo-intellectual/ironical commentary is a disgrace to the game. I live in hope that Morgan and Miller will take over the Series. signed, A Yankee Fan who knows Baseball

Joe Morgan is very biased in his commentary. I am so tired of his constant focus on Berry Bonds.
BeanoCook 02/07/2004
Dude Jackie Robinson did come before you. The world is not out to get you even if you are a subpar analyst.
ty901c 10/23/2003
The best analyst in the business. Joe Morgan is a true PRO who brings the old school baseball savvy to the modern game. He and Miller make Sunday nights, and the radio coverage of the World Series enjoyable. The insight that he brings to a telecast is second to none...he make the HOF as both a player and broadcaster.
Philkid3 09/04/2003
Knows the game like no bodies bussiness. And I'll tell you this, too. He should've been on the All Century team.
grosegreg 06/02/2003
very good, except when discussing pete rose.
getback 05/12/2003
Boring ,I am sick of this guys continuing going on about racial matters. He was a great player and that is it.
Wally Ballou 04/26/2003
When Morgan started out as a TV analyst he was terrific. But hearing him now you really get the sense that he just doesn't *like* baseball that much anymore. He's turning into one of those "in my day..." curmudgeons who manage to make even the most happy affairs seem joyless. It's a shame, given his imcomparable knowledge of the game and his partnership with the superb Jon Miller, that he doesn't have more fun on the broadcasts.
angusmacpherso n 03/23/2003
As fine and incisive a baseball analyst as there has ever been.
mprater 03/04/2003
Very knowledgable, but too struck on Joe Morgan.
BigBadTA 11/22/2002
wow, way too many good things to say about Joe "When i played we did this" Morgan. Another Captain Obvious behind the Mic, whose playing career got him this job. I feel bad for Jon Miller, one of the best announcers, as he has to listen to Joe's fairy tale stories about his playing career. Miller actually puts some insight into the game, instead of Morgan trying to tell us "why it's good to turn a double play to get out of the inning in this situation" i am not lying, he acutally spent five minutes talking about this in a game last year. sadly, there was a double play, and Morgan made himself out to sound like a freakin genius or something.
cujo 10/10/2002
Best baseball analyst out there.
Potch1214 11/07/2001
If I gotta hear once more about "The Big Red Machine" I'm gonna puke. Good insight on some stuff, but jeez...
ellajedlicka21 10/19/2001
He knows a lot about baseball.
NotEbbert 06/26/2001
Somebody explain to me why he's not managing a team. This guys' knowledge and ability to accurately analyze situations is uncanny. Best there is at color...
AndyX 01/12/2001
I enjoyed him as a player and as a personality. He is great at what he does. He is a genuine person and this shows through as he annouces at games. Compared to Chris Berman, Joe Morgan is the second best sports personality.
Johnny Roulette 01/09/2001
he and Jon Miller are the best when they work together. Morgan obviously knows what he's talking about. He gets a little tongue-tied at times, but his knowledge of the game more than makes up for it.
maddmarxx 01/09/2001
He and Jon Miller compliment each other extremely well on ESPN baseball telecasts. As a team, they get a 5.
gimoncy 12/11/2000
He is a very well known baseball player. However, that's not the only reason why he is so famous. He is also a great baseball commentator. His knowledge of the game is incredible. After playing for so many years with the Cincinnati Reds and the San Francisco Giants, he knows what he is talking about.
pdinny 04/09/2000
The guy is deep deeep into himself, but ther4e is no denying that "Joe Knows Baseball." He played with the best franchises in history (Phillies and Reds, nevermind that brief stint with the Astros)and for the best coach ever (Sparky Anderson) so it is know wonder his baseball acumen is off the charts. If he could forget his past glory and focus on today's players and todays game he'd be better, but even so, he's the best baseball commentator right now.
magellan 04/05/2000
I only caught Joe Morgan the player at the tail end of his career in the early eighties with the Phillies. I always felt that he understood the game - it's no surprise that this comes across in his announcing style....
