Peter Marshall's was the best. Since Whoopie, it's taken on a mean face--as a whole.

In the 70's, when they had Peter Marshall as host, it was entertaining and amusing. Ever notice that they always have one seat reserved for a gay cut-up? Paul Lynde was an absolute riot, then they had Jim J. Bullock who was ok, and now they have that hairy Bruce Valanch character, who is apparently a sort of gay Dr. Zaius from Planet of the Apes. After Marshall (useless trivia- Marshall was the father of the unfortunately named 70's/ early 80's Royals player Pete LaCock)they had John Davidson, who is so obnoxiously vile that he would be the Anti-Christ TO the Anti-Christ. In later years, a tool named Tom Bergeron was the host and they also featured infamous mirror destroyer Whoopi Goldberg and sometimes Kathie Lee Gifford who is sorta like the Anti Christ to the Anti- Christs Anti Christ if you know what I mean...

Was great with Whoopi as the center, but took a huge drop when she left.
trebon1038 06/22/2006
I like the concept but after awhile it gets boring.
PlayMisty 10/03/2005
The Peter Marshall/Paul Lynde Squares was the superior version. The Joan Rivers and later Whoopi Goldberg (gag) shows were awful. Paul Lynde's delivery was unmatched and so comical that it was unfortunate that his death precluded him from appearing on the newer versions.

i never really liked this game show. it just seemed to fixed.
Mr Evangel 10/08/2004
The show is boring to me.

It was a much better show years ago when Paul Lynde was alive. One of his best moments was when he was asked this question: When the astronauts are in space, they eat in shifts. Do they also sleep in shifts? Lynde's answer: No, they have jammies!

I do enjoy watching this show. I admit, it has gotten a bit adult in some of the shows, but other then that. A great show. I miss John Ritter being on it.

I'll give the 70's version all five stars. That was a real classic. Today version 21/2 stars for beening a poor inmatation of itself, and that rating might be too high!overall 3 stars.
kolby1973 12/15/2003
It was alot better when Joan Rivers was the middle square years ago. She was very funny. I even liked Whoopi a little bit on Hollywood Squares, but she is a much better actress than a tv game show person....I just don't think Hollywood Squares has been that good since Joan....she is missed...

this one's ok...some of the questions i hardly understand, so i get bored out of my mind...
lightfootl 05/31/2003
It was great when Whoopie was on board.

I'll give it a 5 for the OLDER version. That was a funny show which usually had really witty stars on it.
President -X-D 03/25/2003
I never liked seeing all these washed up "stars" making bad jokes.
lukskywlkr. 10/31/2002
I like this show for the personalities, like Whoopi Goldberg for instance, but is it really necessary for the answers to be given to the celebs beforehand? I think it would be more fun to watch if they had to think for themselves.
typhoon 07/28/2002
hollywood squares is an ok game and it is okay if you like celebrities being funny but it is not even close to the greatest game show
LoneUSFullHous eFan 05/26/2002
Depends on the celebrities featured. I like Gilbert Godfreed, Caroline Re drives me nuts, Brad garrett is usually funny, Rita Rutner is just dull...
jeannie-n-tony 04/14/2002
5 for the old ones where Paul Lynde was usually the middle. I hate the new ones. They lack the charm and comedy of the older ones.
whitedevil311 03/20/2002
This show is all right but does Whoopi Goldberg have to be in every episode??
jeffrey715 07/10/2001
Funny!!!!!
callmetootie 04/04/2001
It depends on the celebrities. They usually have good celebrities on, but when they don't you can enjoy it, but just not as much. I really liked when Linda Blair was on it, and I can recall Kim Fields on it. She was good too.
unkystan 02/18/2001
Too much Whoopi, too much Vallanch, so too many "black/slave jokes" & too may gay jokes. This alienates older audiences. The weeks with classic TV stars like Tim Conway and the like brought really clean family comedy. Now we have mostly nobodies who look at the monitor in front of them for jokes. There is no spontineity, its all too pat.
Nikita91 02/08/2001
The 70's version would get 5 stars, easy. The latest 80's version and the new version are just not funny. I'm still hoping that one day the 70's version will be found somewhere and return to TV.
Heatseeker678 02/07/2001
Newer version, isn't as fun as the 70's or even 80's versions.
SamIAm 09/26/2000
Pathetic display of Hollywood "has beens."
alicat 09/19/2000
Nothing is worse than seeing these struggling stars go into the the Hollywood Squares to be a square. Especially the dreaded middle square. Whoppie, Penny Marshall, or any of the other regulars just embarass themselves to the point of humilation. I just can't bear to watch the 'agree' 'disagree' show.

I LIKE THE ORGINAL VERSION

All programs which give more money to people who already have a decent life and arent starving like people on other continents who dont even know what tv is, are wrong. This money should be used to make a difference in the world.
swan1763et 11/27/1999
Cute. all about Whoopie's EGO-- Kills some time before prime time.

I watch it occasionally, it's on at an inconvenient time for me.

worst f*****g show on the airwaves today. whoever came up w this idea should be drug out into the street, beaten like a tired mule, and left for dead...
gayl1583om 11/24/1999
This is much more than a game show. It is show biz philanthropy. Where else would former stars like Richard Simmons and that guy from Too Close For Comfort have the forum to continue to display their talents?
