In his memoirs he breaks down when he sees a white homeless person, and panics when, during a layover, he sees that his pilot is black. These are out of context, but why the hell would he allow these things to be published?

Mandela was on the US terrorist watch list. Yes, US intelligence informed the white government of his terrorist activities. As for him never intending to kill innocent people. Define innocent and also read the "Rivonia trail" before making such comments. Now try to keep up. White people held a referendum to decide if non-white people should be allowed to vote. If the majority of white people in South Africa were racist, why did the referendum results allow non-white people to vote? Focus, appartheid did not target black people only. (This must be a revelation) Indians, Chinese, Portugese etc where all treated the same way. Yet they were all able to make a good living in South Africa, get an education and become very rich. Only blacks could not bear it, while other nations were still flogging to South Africa being well aware of apartheid. As for :"massacring black school children peacefully protesting in the famous soweto tradgedy". I think you are referring to 16 J... Read more

He is not perfect by a long shot, but he certainly broke the mold of the African leader who came to power by democratic means and then abolished free elections, imposed dictatorship, stole everything not nailed down and generally impoverished the country.  He deserves a lot of credit for what he has done, and I was an extreme skeptic when he came to power. I suppose, realistically, that the collapse of the Soviet Union, his mentor and paymaster, had a lot to do with his being a reborn democrat.  I still try to keep a realistic attitude about people in power, but we must give credit where credit is due. I don't forgive his murderous past, but revolutions are not made by playing patty-cake.

It's obvious you don't know your history about the man at all so please read wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelson_mandela and http://www.adequacy.org/stories/2001.6.29.95342.343 6.html Now then, as for him not killing all the whites when he was released, this was prevented as the whites still controlled the S.A.D.F. So why is it Mandela Disband the 32 Battalion? I mean it was 95% black wasn't it? Kinda strange, huh?!?! For pitty sake why was Mandela still on the terrorist watch list in 2003? http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click;_id=3& art_id=ct20030810102700522T600578

In South Africa there was complete segregation between the races (apartheid). There was little oppurtunity in education or jobs for blacks. FOr the most part they were kept in poverty while many white people were extremely wealthy.Black people couldn't vote and were considered lower in status in everyway. They werent even considered citizens of SOuth africa and were recquired to show a passport when outside their village. Anyone that couldnt produce a passport at anytime was thrown in prison often for life (because in south africa you could be held in prison without trial)They were also subject to attacks by the military and police. The ANC (african national congress) formed in the 1930's. At first they attempted peaceful protest against apartheid but after decades of this not changing anything they began bombing military bases (they never targeted civilians like some people on here have claimed).I notice that the people that call Nelson Mandela a murderer don't mention anything about t... Nelson mandela decided to avoid placing his left wing terrorist veiws from his book. Mandela ironically was praised for offereing forgiveness following his release from robin bay then looked upon as an inspiration. The same inspiration who was jailed for plotting the destruction a mall filled with innocent civilians among other terrorist offences. This is a man who uses violence to promote ideologys so it is no surprise his book sidesteps from his past. Following mandelas usual fasion , promoting vague ideology's instead of offering direct action '

the lionization of Mandella is typical of liberal thinking which focuses on idealism rather than developing practical solutions to real problems. Mandella was no hero, but the history revisionists are busy. He indeed was a terrorist and communist, and his life no more represents a heroic stuggle than Bin Laden's fight against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Hum bug.

He was a terrorist, murderer, communist. Not the man he was made out to be. Does anyone realize he went to jail after he was convicted of attempting to blow up a mall? A shopping mall full of women and children. He is no different than Yasser Arafat. Steven Biko is the man that should have received the attention Mandella did. And one other thing, othere than giving black political power, how did he help South. Africa?

Nelson Mandela has communist principles and is in favour of violence in struggle for freedom. It is rediculous to think that this rather pathetic follower was in any way responsible for the abolition of apartheid in South Africa. South Africa was under immense political and commercial pressure from western democaratic nations and the abolition of apartheid would have happened with or without Nelson Mandela. Amnesty International themselves denounced Nelson Mandela as a political prisoner due to his involvement in terrorist activities. I think there are many people in South Africa who are far more deserving of the adulation shown to Mr Mandela. I agree with another comment and add that Steve Biko did far more in the passive resistance of apartheid than Nelson Mandela ever did.

A great man and an African hero. There don't seem to be many leaders in Africa these days that can be called great or heroes, but Mandela definitely was. If more world leaders were like him, the world would be a better place!

Shame on you, all you Mandela haters. What's his wife (ex-, by'th way) got to do with this? Mandela has proven to the entire world that anger, revenge and violence is never an answers to any conflict or differences. Would you have liked it better if South Africa went to war with itself, like many other African and Middle Eastern countries? You really should check yourselves and find a cure for your sickness (which it is). Mandela is the greatest statesman of the 20th century and our bit(h-as$ comments cannot change this reality. He has been (and still is, at his age) an inspiration to millions and an advisor to coutries' presidents and political leaders. Go to hell you ignorant, frustrated, less-informed sorry a$$es. Phew! I feel so much better now.

Mandela is not the freedom fighter model we would like to see in conflict areas. The model is the non-violence model set by Ghandi and Martin Luther King Jr. However, Mandela's and indeed South Africa's reconciliation between Whites and Blacks is a powerful lessons to us all. Peace and freedom can only be achieved if the people will be willing to forgive and forget.

Lying Marxist vermin who was justly convicted in open court of plotting to destroy a shopping center filled with women and children as well as other terrorist acts. He and his cowardly band were incapable of defeating the South Africans in open combat and resorted to the other popular Leftist ploy of misinformation. The useful idiots in the west carried on the cause and South Africa was lost. Examine the state of South Africa today to understand the moral depravity of this act. He is Marxist savage and thug. Blacks especially the Xhosa Nation (Mandela's Tribe is Tembu Xhosa) were not the majority in South African except through their mass migration into the country before Zulu aggression in the 19th century and later because of the dysfunctional Black Majority ruled nations in the north. A lesson for any who wholeheartedly support open borders.

Mandela and the African National Congress have made South Africa make the transformation into the 21st Century. South Africa is slowly becoming a democratic society despite many years of the brutal apartheid regime which concentrated power with the top 20% of whites while leaving other people of color behind in sub-standard conditions. These disparities won't be solved overnight; the vestiges of apartheid are still apparent in the country, but the election of Nelson Mandela in 1994 and of his successor Thabo Mbeki have shown that progress has been made. Mandela himself was not a communist, but certain elements of the ANC were. Mandela did not believe in violence, but considering the fact that the blacks were being suppressed and brutalized during apartheid, it was no wonder why Mandela and his organization would have to turn to violence to meet political ends. Mandela has democratic-socialist leanings, but he was committed to opening up South Africa for more trade and business. Moving ... Read more

I wish people would wake up and learn the truth about Nelson Mandela. He is a hardline communist, and a convicted terrorist. He was caught with enough explosives to outfit a small army. He and his followers are guilty of murder. His wife, Winnie, is a convicted murderer. Their followers invented a novel way of killing off the opposition known as "collaring". "Collaring" involves jamming a tire over your victim's head and shoulders, then lighting it on fire. The Mandelas are barbarians. The African National Congress is a militant, racist, communist terror organization that has succeeded in destroying South Africa. Nelson Mandela is not a freedom fighter, but a brutal murderer.

POWER by Nelson Mandela Inauguration Speech, 1994 Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our Light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves: Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you NOT to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the Glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And, as we let our own Light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others. Mandela rocks!:0)

How he kept his country from self-destructing, I will never understand. Many countries have splintered apart with significantly less severe internal differences than South Africa.
