Saddam was a normal Mid-Eastern dictator, that for the moment decided that he can outsmart the entire World. I do not think that Iraq has had indeed the nuclear weapon. Anyway, Hussein used the rumors about to frighten his best "friend" Iran. And this lie (if that was a lie) caused very far-reaching consequences. Hussein counld not believe that somebody may accept his words as a conclusive evidence. This was his mistake. Bush needed an excuse, and Hussein gave it to him.

Saddam was no saint, but he was guilty of fewer crimes than George W. Bush.

A horrible leader. However,he could have been taken out much more efficiently without the severe loss of lives and multi-billion dollar pricetag.

Was going us a favor killing those ingrates. Tolerated other religions unlike Saudi Arabia. When will the Iraq fight for themselves. Never. And those cops are usually running the other way. only reason they are there as cops and iraqi guardsmen is because Iraq has 70% unemployment.

This man committed so many atrocities, and yet many turn their cheek on this fact. Whether people agree or disagree about the war in Iraq, facts remain that this monster deliberately and casually murdered his own people, and further exploited his nation to fulfill his own, as well as his family's selfish needs. Keep in mind, he was a thug when he began his dishonorable career. And anyone who tries to glorify this man is sadly misguided and totally inane.

Any leader who can hold onto power and through a decade long war with Iran, a war with America, England, France and others during the early ninties, 10 years of crippling economic sanctions and finaly not ousted until 2003 must be a pretty good, strong leader. This is nothing to do with his morals or the fact that he was a tyrant which is not under question here. The fact of the matter is, he was a very strong leader, a terrible economist.....and a complete bastard. USELESS INFO: A friend of mine actually lived in Iraq, in a kind of camp for westerners, for a few months in the early eighties during the Iran-Iraq war, he was only about three or four. His major memories are not been allowed out on his own to play because bored iraqi soldiers on guard might mistake him for a small animal in the distance as all ever they did was shoot crows for target practice! All hail king saddam.

A ruthless monster who deserves whatever fate deals him from this point on. Iraq became a virtual hellhole under his rule, with the people living in constant fear of the regime. While it is questionable as to whether or not Hussein posed an immediate threat to the United States, it is clear that he needed to be dealt with. The world is better off without him in power.

The US won the Gulf War I but they didn't deal with Saddam because o f international opinion which saw him terrorise the Iraqi public, Muslim's or otherwise for the next 12 years. He's more useful as a hitman director rather than as a leader. He'd be more suitable worshipping Satan than Islam. But he has been captured. The only thing left to do is to execute the damn fanatical b*****d.

An insane fool who dared to defy the United States, and thus saw his evil dictatorship come to an end. He killed millions of his own people, led secret research and development programs into weapons of mass destruction and supported an even more evil group, Al Queda. Nuff said!

We should have dealt with Saddam back in 1991 and a lot of people said, including myself, we should have taken him out then but international opinion prevailed and he is still a problem. Has every one forgotten a little thing called WW II were a repressive dictator became hostile to his neighbors amassed weapons and used them. Or did every one forget what happened on 9/11/01. I am sure Saddam had a big party that day. I am glad we did not wait for this monster to do some thing like 9/11. Hopefully him and all his cronies have discover there is only worst than desert heat waiting for them in the after life.

Hardline Extreme-Leftist. Before the Gulf War he bragged about being an Athiest. He's only freedom was freedom of religion in which Iraq had the biggest Church of Satan in the world across the intersection from the biggest Mosque in Bagdad (from the 'Dictonarry of the Occult' of the 1980's). When he was attacked he started pertending to pray and use Allas(Gods) name. Gasses people & Supports Terrorist. An AntiChrist (Iraq was origanally called Babbelon), call him Satan.

In Iraq's last presidential election Saddam got 100% of the votes. No one else was stupid enough to run against him. I guess anyone who threatens to kill anyone else who votes against him would win by that kind of margin. I've heard of too many horror stories about what he does to his own people, the fear, control, torture, starvation, humiliation and ultimately death of innocent people. Remember when he released all of his prisoners to show the world how humane he is? I'm willing to bet a large majority of those people were innocent to begin with. You'd think that his crimes against humanity would be enough reason to wipe him out but noooo, the liberal left and all the anti-war (anti-american) protesters say we should never go to war because people die. Well, tell that to the Iraqi's who are tortured to death under Hussein. This isn't just a war we want to engage in, it's a rescue mission and the victims have been waiting too long.

I find it quite incredible how this man has staying power in Iraq. Considering the fact that his people are so oppressed, you would imagine that they would have overthrown him long ago. Saddam rules by suppressing the opposition and intimidating the general population into submission. Most people don't like him because he is a stubborn tyrant, some in the country do like him because he is against the American government. If given the chance, I bet you that the people would rise against him. I believe that if anything, the sanctions against the country has actually lengthened Saddam's rule over Iraq. Public sentiment has swung from being against Saddam to justifing his actions to an extent within the populace of the country. Saddam is a firm nationalist, and for that, he appeals to a segment of his society. Unfortunately, his ambitions have been misdirected towards entering wars of conquest against larger nations like Iran and the U.S. He should have instead put his focus on building up the economy of his country through the building of a consumer class. Saddam could have focused in on trying to wean the country off of its dependency on oil profits, for that is a very unstable source of money that wreaks havoc on plenty of Middle Eastern economies. But then again, does a tyrant really want to help his own people? According to Forbes magazine, Saddam has up to 6 billion dollars in personal assets, all from oil profits. He uses the money to build houses for himself and to buy off potential opponents. He has helped rebuild his country after the war, but the country is still beset in a bad economy. We need to give more funding to the Iraqi opposition. The CIA has not been provided with the funding necessary to begin insurrections in the country until very recently. The solution is going to come in the form of a rapid CIA covert operation, not through a massive military operation like what Pentagon planners want. If Saddam sees that he is being pushed to the wall, he won't hesitate to use his entire arsenal to turn a potential conflict into an all out regional war. The reason why we didn't go after him in the first Gulf War was just that. We could not get into a war that threatened to severely damage the worldwide economy. How could we wage war effectively if we don't have petroleum supplies necessary to fuel the war machine? In my view, Saddam should be disposed of swiftly and quietly, before he can make any moves with his arsenal of weapons.

I completely agree with Joe Lieberman on this one; Hussein is also a major threat to world safety and should not be overlooked in the war on terrorism. He's been sliding by way too long.

Gee, I remember 15 or 20 years ago when I was working with Iraqi refugees - people with democratic principles, or of the wrong religion - against this tyrant and his party. Where were all the sanctimonious americans then? Why do you all think he invaded Kuwait (a complicated question involving the political history of the region that few north americans have any interest in or knowledge of, though they do have opinions)? He believed that the US would tolerate it. A slight miscalculation, but not without foundation.
