For several years, my family forced me to watch this against my will. It was ok the first year, but after the 3rd or 4th time I rebelled.
Paula5816 09/13/2008
OMG, this is a classic, not just because it's always on, but it makes you think of the kids you grew up with and all the things we all did as kids...it just makes you appreciate what got you to be who you are....

It has it's moments (the leg lamp, for example), but overall it really isn't a very good movie. Yet TNT shows it all day long every year.

Jean Shepherd was one of my favorites.I loved when the kid put his tounge on the ploe after being double dog dared! And Christmas dinner in the Chinese restarant was funny also.My mother got me hooked on it.
Howdy Roby 10/23/2005
I am 73 years old and my mom wouldn't let me have a BB gun when I was a kid. I fact when hightop boots came out with a pocket for a knife or a whistle mom got me the ones with the whistle, I think the Christmas story is the best and my daughter bought me the DVD set for Christmas 2004
CastleBee 12/01/2004
This is the best, most hilarious Christmas movie ever produced. I love everything about it - the fact that author Jean Shepherd narrates, the time period, the kid with his tongue stuck to the frozen pole, the wacky kid telling Ralphie and his brother that he loves Santa, the creepy Santa crew giving the kids the bums rush, little brother unable to get up when he falls down in the snow, and finally when Ralphie has had enough and beats the poop out of the bully. It may have been written about the 1940's but this is timeless childhood stuff. My one and only gripe is that they always use this one for the 48 hour (or longer) marathon on cable EVERY FREAKING YEAR!!!
Chalky 11/30/2004
maybe if they didn't play it so often, it would get a 3 but they kill this movie to death........aaaahhhh, i just can't stand it, the corny narrator, the decoder ring plus ralphie is a punk and a half; i'd like to shoot all their eyes out.........but the one part i do like is the dad's lamp...'fragile'
Elf_ears13 10/31/2004
I watch it every year on Christmas Eve with my family. It's a great movie, I don't think I can say that enough!
Flagpolegirl 09/30/2004
You see I am living proof that courious kids can stick their tongue to a flag pole. I was in kindergarten and I had live in Tennessee the first part of my life so I thought I'd lick the Ice. They sent several police cars and ambulance and even a fire truck. A little hot water from the school nurse and I was free...I've always wondered if I was the onyl one. That's how I found this...H.Webb

Usually dull, except when Jean Shepherd is doing his frothy, over-the-top narration; then, it's nauseating.
irishgit 11/11/2003
The best Christmas movie ever made. Watch it at least twice a season.

I look forward to watching this every year. "You'll shoot your eye out kid!"

This show would be better if it wasn't shown every year.

I first rated this on 11-28-02, and only gave it four stars. I realize now, after watching it a couple of different times over the holidays, that it very much deserves to be 5 stars. This is a truly enjoyable family Christmas movie, and I have to say, one of my favorites. There are so many wonderful scenes--when they go shopping and see a very gripy Santa at the store, when the kid sticks his tongue to the pole, when Frankie finally flogs the playground bully who is way bigger than he is, the scene where his kid brother smears dinner all over his face, the scene where the infamous lamp arrives, the scene where his mother makes him put on the pink bunny outfit, the scene where the neighbor's dogs get the turkey, the scene where his mom makes him wash his mouth out with soap (literally), and finally, the scene where he actually gets what he always wanted for Christmas. It's a heartwarming look at Christmastime for two young boys, their friends, and their parents back in the forties.

I look forward to watching this movie at least once every Christmas season. It gives a refreshing look at a simpler time when life wasn't so complicated and planes didn't crash into buildings.
Jason1972 12/18/2002
This movie came out in 1983, just when you thought that Hollywood could never produced anymore classic Holiday films. Low and behold, this movie comes out and it captured my heart instantly. It's a great enduring film. Darren McGavin and Peter Billingsley absolutely shined in the movie. They actually made a sequel, but it could not capture the sheer magic of this flawless movie.
kelly7655 12/01/2002
I must have seen this movie at least 200 times now. My son got really into it last Christmas, and he continued to watch it through the summer. The casting in this movie was perfect. Peter Billingsly as Ralphie Parker. A wide eyed, round faced little boy who just wants his "official Red Ryder carbon action 200 shot range model air rifle with a compass in the stock and this thing which tells time". The movie has scenes which both adults and kids can enjoy (the infamous leg lamp and "Fudge" word, as well as the Little Orphan Annie Decoder Pen, which Ralphie has a few words to say about "Drink your Ovalitine? Son of a...). This movie does a great job of jumping back and forth to daydreams, worries of children and funny truths (don't stick your tongue to the flag pole!). So true to life, it seems it could have been a true story. It's a helarious, heart warming holiday classic!
Cosmo Renfro 10/18/2002
The Christmas story is great for the holidays and just for year round entertainment.
LoneUSFullHous eFan 02/16/2002
It is one of my personal favorites. Practically a holiday tradition in my family, watching this film at least once. "You'll shoot your eye out!" that has to be a classic line.
otlady27 12/06/2001
This is a must see for me every Christmas- it's not the same without it. I' ve watched it every year since I was 9 or 10 years old and I never get tired of it. From Flick's frozen tongue to the ugly leg lamp to the bunny PJs to the Bumpus hounds devouring the family's turkey dinner, there's a good laugh in every scene. There's also a nice balance with touching and sentimental scenes. It has become the "It's A Wonderful Life" from the 1980s which will just get better as the years go by.
afterglow70 06/21/2001
A great story about a little boy who wanted nothing more then a Red Rider BB gun for X-mas. But everyone told him that he would shoot his eye out. I can't tell you the rest but it is really funny. I love the rabbit outfit his aunt sends to him. He looks so funny in it! I love the scene were he also beats up the bully.
Spiralingmarce 05/21/2001
"You'll shoot your eye out" has haunted me for years. My family still laughs about the leg lamp. I shudder when I pass a light pole in winter, thinking about tongues getting stuck.
Molfan 05/06/2001
A wonderful Christmas movie we watch every year. It is a slice of america from yesteryear. It takes place in about the late 1940s.All Ralphie wants for Christmas is a Red Ryder BB gun.Everyone he tells this too says he "will shoot his eye out" there are many funny scenes, the tongue stuck to the pole, Ralphies dad's prize the ugly leg lamp. etc. A good family movie well played by all the actors.

edgar you have way too much time on your hands watching porn star talk shows
Shroomwoman 11/29/2000
"A Christmas Story" is the funniest holiday movie I've ever seen. Set in the '40s, the show is about life during the Christmas season from the perspective of a young boy (Ralphie). Hilarious scenes abound, from a diabolical Santa terrorizing little children to a classroom teacher turning into a witch in the eyes of Ralphie. Some of the best scenes involve Ralphie's father, an Archie Bunker sort, who huffs and puffs around the house as he reacts to the problems that arise. When he wins a contest, you will not believe the prize he's awarded nor his reaction to this unusual item. Talk about funny! Although watching "A Christmas Story" makes me laugh aloud over and over, it also reminds me that childhood is very serious business. I definitely appreciate being able to enjoy the humor from an adult's perspective. This movie is shown on television every year, so be sure to see it!
upchuck 11/13/2000
Great movie, at Christmas or any time...I think many people can relate to tongues frozen to metal poles, snowsuits too bundly to move in, dog grabbing your dinner and a boys desire for a BB gun at 9 years old. I think it has become the Christmas "classic" for all ages.
almondrain 11/13/2000
The best Christmas movie!!!!!! This is a "must see" every year in my house it is so funny. My favorite is whe his tounge gets stuck on the pole , and when the dogs eat the turkey.
PoorOldEdgarDe rby 09/22/2000
Undoubtedly one of the best. F-R-A-G-I-L-E must be Italian. I wonder where I could get one of those leg lamps? Drink more Ovaltine??? What a jip! Is it just me or was the mom kinda sexy? Probably just me. Hey did you know that Flick (the kid who stuck his tongue to the flag pole) became a porn star!! It's true I saw him on a talk show.
litt3605om 01/09/2000
I can never get sick of it, I watch the marathon on TNT every year, It is a classic!
thel2104et 12/11/1999
You'll want to shoot your eye out if you've never seen this Christmas classic. Leg lamps, bars of soap, turkey-eating dogs and a Chinese Christmas dinner - this is the stuff nightmares are made of. Jean Shepherd's death this year makes his wonderful story all the more poignant.
