Excellent choice for a camping trip! My boyfriend and I dropped our jaws at the sight of the canyon from the road. We wore silly grins on our faces while we stared at the most incredible sight in America! We did have a few bumps in the road, but that comes with the territory of "just winging it" and showing up one day without reservations.
We weren't able to find a campsite inside the park, but we went to the town of Desert View, which was about 30 miles down the road. We easily found camping there for only $12 a night with a bathroom. No hook-ups, but it was very comfortable and safe. We also had the great surprise of waking up early morning by a pack of coyotes less than 30 feet from our tent. They woke up the whole camp! Very memorable.
The only other thing I would mention is that we were unaware that you could not hike down into the canyon and camp without a backcountry permit. You have to apply at least 4 months in advance for that, and we had decided to go about 4 days before we got there! Rim hikes were all that were in the cards for us.
So, it did put a major damper on our hiking since we were very limited in how far we could hike. However, we throughly enjoyed our short 2 day trip including the watchtower on the edge of one of the cliffs.

I am not an outdoorsy or nature-loving person, but I enjoyed touring the Grand Canyon when I was eight years old. It didn't look as deep as the textbooks said because much of it was obscured by fog. The rocks were pretty and came in different shades of orange and red. There were lots of squirrels and other wildlife, and I liked that they hadn't learned to fear humans.

The Grand Canyon is a really wonderful place, though I never visited it from Vegas. You will be overtaken with the power that nature possess. There are great little areas where you can sit and have lunch, or if you are really adventurous you can take a mule ride through the canyon! The color variations at the canyons are amazing, and its pretty neat to watch clouds have shadows!

Pretty, but overrated. Very similar to Canyonlands in Utah. Bryce Canyon is better, in my opinion.

1 Day is not enough to cover the whole Grand Canyon. That is a guarantee. You might be able to see 1 of the Rims for a good length of time, but unless you are very quick to judge and consider yourself a very casual observer, then you will probably need a couple of days to see the Grand Canyon from at least the South & West Rims, then, if possible, explore the Canynon in a more up-close & in-depth manner with a hike down the. There are also other options in seeing the Canyon, ie. helicopter tours, Native Indian guides, etc.

With the new Skywalk, this natural wonder will not soon be forgotten.

Beautiful site! It's amazing how big it really is. When you look down into the canyon, the Colorado River doesn't look that big, and it IS a big river. I'm planning on going back when the Grand Canyon Skywalk is finished.

I have gone both to the North Rim and the South. The first time you see it, or anytime you see after a gap of some time, it is hard to believe something like this exists on earth. That gap, phew, it is unbelievable. The only problem is that, it is difficult to really experience the big canyon. You have to be in excellent physical shape and have a lot of time at hand to go down the canyon or something worthwhile in the canyon. A must see for anybody. A better, more accessible Canyon/Park is Bryce Canyon, a short drive from the North Rim. South Rim is where most people go, and it is nice, but North Rim is excellent too. The drive to North Rim is just breathtaking. It has vast areas of green pastures, colors in the fall, and so many deer and other wildlife. Not many people make it to the North Rim, so it is a lot more peaceful and you can enjoy the canyon more. Beautiful sunsets too.

Fantastic sites from every viewing spot (try the east side where no one goes), cool weather due to the elevation (even in the middle of summer) and the small town outside the entrance has reasonable motels for the night and the best Mcdonalds I've eaten in in 20+ years (makes you remember why they got so popular in the first place).

Pictures simply don't do the Grand Canyon justice. You arrive at the edge and your mind can't quite catch the scope of the vastness of the place - and then you see a bird fly into it, and the scale becomes apparent, and your jaw just drops. It's a little crowded with people at times, but when it's quiet, there may be no more spectacular place on Earth.

WOW! Took our teenagers here during spring break 2004. We were overwhelmed how amazing the canyon is. Try to stay right on the rim in the park, it is so wellworth it and a huge timesaver. Reservations are hard to get but keep checking for cancellations--We did (3 days before we arrived) and we ended up staying right on the rim at the Kachina Lodge. Don't miss the historic ElTovar Lodge lobby. The dining room there is very nice. The free shuttle to all the lookout points was great. The mules weren't being used while we were there--the trails were being repaired. Try to see sunrise or sunset!

We drove from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon-total drive time 10 hours- but well worth it! The sheer scale and beauty of the Grand Canyon is almost indescribable. We were surprised how much we loved it and we enjoyed watching the clouds go over and changing the color of the canyon every 5 seconds. We went at the first of May and it even snowed on us for 3 minutes! There are a lot of foreign travelers but that does add to it. Also it is 20.00 per car to enter the Canyon and I would suggest eating before or after you come to the Canyon, food is very expensive and bring bottled water with you because again bottled water can run you 3.50. We went to the South Rim and every bit of it is gorgeous, we are even going to blow up some of the pictures we took to hang up. It is a good place for a family to go and every member will enjoy it. The park rangers are very helpful and can answer any question you ask. This is a natural wonder that should not be missed!

Maybe three years ago I went on a trip out west, visiting Vegas, Grand Canyon and San Fran. The Canyon was by far the most exciting. I didn't make it all the way down to the plateau, but even not doing that it was a really tough climb up. It's exciting and beautiful. I only wish I could've spent more time there.

This is my favorite place on earth. A million times I had drove by signs that tell you are close to the Grand Canyon. I never thought anything of it. I never really wanted to go see it. A friend of mine took me there for a birthday gift a couple of years ago. He made me wear a bandana over my eyes until he put me right were he wanted me so I could have the best view. He took the bandana off and I thought I had died and gone to heaven. The most incredible view in the world. It was like someone had put a huge painting in front of you and you wanted to touch it, but you knew if you did, you would fall into the canyon. I think that nature did an incredible job of carving this perfect place. When you go, make sure that you hike to the bottom. Be very prepared. Take a lot of energy bars and a water bottle. There are a couple of places to fill your bottle w/ on the way up too.

The Grand Canyon is a beautiful site to see. I have visited twice, once in the spring and once in the winter. It is an amazing geological formation and absolutely worth the visit but unless you are ready for some extreme hiking into the valley there is little reason to stay for more than a day. Oh and don't bring your dog, they are not allowed on any of the trails.

"Clark I think we're lost", "Helen we're not lost, will you please let me do the driving" "I honestly don't think we're gonna find the Grand Canyon on this road!" "Jesus it's only the biggest goddamn hole in the world!" And is it ever. You really need to see the Grand Canyon at some point in your life. What can I say it's unbelievable, it's just so immense it's like some huge creature left this massive, twisted footprint in the earths surface. Just pressed it straight down so that the edges drop off in a near sheer wall to the canyon floor. We hiked down the North Rim trail to the bottom and spent the night along the river. There's actually a guy who has a house down at the bottom who lives there year round, (or at least he did 11 years ago). The story I heard was that he had something to do with the hydro power in the area and was able to finagel a plot of land from the parks service. So as you approach the bottom, covered in red clay dust, sweating like a pig, and roasting like one too you come across an igloo water cooler filled with ice cold lemonade waiting for the infrequent hiker. Good Lord let me tell you that was some of the best, most memorable lemonade I have ever had. He does ask for donations of some amount to pay for the supplies so bring some change with you if you go. If you think the hike down in 110 degree weather was bad, wait till you turn around the next day and head back up. That was our one mistake. If I could do it again I would've spent another day at the bottom, both to explore more and to rest up before starting the ascent. Especially because one of the guys in our group was a bit of a Nancy Boy and my buddy and I had to haul up most of his stuff about 6 1/2 of the 7 miles.

You have to see it to believe it. It is impossible for photography or video to capture the vastness of this canyon, it's amazing colors, and the abrubtness of its drop. After seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time, it's easy to see why this place has an almost spiritual impact on people. If you haven't made the trip yet, try and get there soon.

What an absolutely amazing feeling to first see the Grand Canyon. You feel like you are the smallest thing on earth. When you enter the park, you have to drive for awhile (at least the end that I went through) before you see it. Then when you see it, you become breathless. There are not words to describe what it looks like and pictures don't do it justice. You have to see it with your own eyes to see how massive it is. Along with the feeling of just seeing it, there are tons of trails to hike on, and different camping trips you can take down into the canyon. I only did a day hike but I really recommend going camping. I wish I had had the chance to do more when I was there. I hope to someday go back. It is a sight like no other.
